Children, Ben (my father) and Sylvia.I am looking for Morris' brother Edgar (or Edward) a portrait artist who did not emigrate to the USA from Hungary.I do not know of any of the names you have mentioned.

Hi Adam,

I have some of this information. I've been in contact with EGR's grandaughter, Francesca Robinson and got his father's name which is Moritz.

EGR's grandfather is my great, great, great grandfather. But I don't know that name. My great, great grandfather is Avrum Enoch Goldenberg from the town of Yedintzy in Rumania. He would have been Mortiz's brother. My great grandfather, Isidore Cecil Goldenberg, made the trip through Ellis Island in 1901. He apparently stayed at Mortiz's place when he came over until he could get a place of his own. He sent for the rest of his family three years later. My grandfather came over in 1904 when he was 4 years old.

I've got some more if your interested. My father changed out name because of anti semitism in New York in the 50s.

Would love to know what you have uncovered. I would especially like the name of EGR's grandfather. That would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks

Steve

JewishGen Hungarian SIG volunteers are transcribing records that will include more information about Veider, Genut, and other families from Maramaros. The records are from books that are in the State Archives in Baia Mare, Romania. Thanks to the donations from Maramaros descendants, we've been able to hire a researcher to photograph pages from all of the Jewish vital records that we have been able to locate in the archives. You can find more information about the project and volunteer to help transcribe records at http://www.maramarosjewishrecords.com

Vivian Kahn, Oakland, California
JewishGen Hungarian-SIG Coordinator

I'm not still on ancestor.com much. It turns out the lady I was searching for was a Szasz, not a Sass. If you want to know about her, however, since Sass is probably a transliteration of Szasz, check out my book TO THE HEART OF THE NILE which is her biography.

You can find it on Amazon.com or on my website www.patshipman.com

Telciu/Telcs is in Bistrita County, so records will be found at that archive (not in the Maramures archive). Telciu Jewish records would be found among those of Nasaud.

Ilva Mica/Kisilva is also in Bistrita County, but Jewish records are combined with those of O-Radna/Rodna.

Beth Long
Budapest

Thank you, Beth. I believe that this Greek Catholic church is the church of my great-grandfather. If I can find the name of the church to begin searching for a record of him there, this may open a world of information about him and his family. We've been at a brick wall for years trying to find information about his family.

I will try the archive link you sent and perhaps that is the beginning. Will they respond to internet inquiry?

Debra Sutherland

There was a Greek Catholic church in Piskarkos (at least at one time). Records more than 100 years old will not be at the church, but rather at the Maramure branch of the Romanian National Archives. Here is their website:

http://www.arhivelenationale.ro/index.php?lan=0&jud=102

Beth Long

Yes, you are correct about the Maramures area, but she is discussing the area around Suceava (so this thread is actually on the wrong board).

My point about likelihood of Orthodox v.s. Greek Catholic was addressed specifically toward Suceava. I have a gazetteer of Bukovina church jurisdictions which confirms this.

But anything is possible, so one could start with either set of films and see what comes up. I was just trying to cut down on time spent.

Beth

Mary is actually right, Beth. Almost ALL Romanians in the Maramures area were Greek Catholics before WWII. After that, the Communists took power and outlawed the Greek Catholic churches and all Romanians became Orthodox. After 1989, the GC Church was established again and they are now struggling to take over their former churches. Some Romanians reconverted to their ancestor's religion, but the majority remains Orthodox, that is why there are fewer GC churches than Orthodox in the area now.

He married Esther Varum.

Yitzchak Ghenut (Genud) - Born in the late 1800s in the area of Ilva Mica. He had 2 sons from a first marriage. Then he remarried. His second wife was Sarah, they had 3 sons and they lived in Moinesti before WWII.

Can you point me in the right direction? I've searched the jewishgen site and I couldn't find anything. I'm looking for any of the names that I don't give in the post and also if there are any living descendents. thanks.
