Mary is actually right, Beth. Almost ALL Romanians in the Maramures area were Greek Catholics before WWII. After that, the Communists took power and outlawed the Greek Catholic churches and all Romanians became Orthodox. After 1989, the GC Church was established again and they are now struggling to take over their former churches. Some Romanians reconverted to their ancestor's religion, but the majority remains Orthodox, that is why there are fewer GC churches than Orthodox in the area now.
