Did you look in Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Canada's manifest and www.castlegarden.org Without a location or at least an original spelling of a surname the research is like looking for a needle in a haystack. :(

Thank you for the information. I have a 1910 Census record for Steve Jones widower born in Rom-Austria. So I have the proof that they originated there. However, that does not help me with an original name. What I'm looking for is ship records. Steve claimed on the 1910 census to have immigrated in 1885.

A lot of times, census recorders would avoid the gypsy camps or not be let in, so there are gaps in records. Also, many marriages and births were private and performed in the camp, so there are not many marriage/birth records, either. "Gypsies" did not like Gadja or non-gysies, and vice-versa. Avoidance was the norm.

Someplace in the US documents should be a place of birth in old Austria/Romania.
JOVANOVICH and JONESEVICH are Americanized version and for sure would not be found in present Romania.
IONESCU does seem Romanian.
Seeking info on Jones surname

I have 8 generations of my husband's family starting with the children most recently born back to Steve Jones b.abt1850 in Austria/Romania. They are Ludar and am interested in finding out more about the Jones name. I'm sure it wasn't that in the "old country". One story is that the name was "Jovanovich" but I would think that would have been shortened to Jovan. Another story is the name was Jonesevich, but from what I've found, I don't think there was a "J" in the languages of Romania. So, I've concluded that the name was probably some variation of "Ionesvich" or "Ionescu".

Any ideas??
tlhmjones@yahoo.com

HELLO;
My name is GARY NADEN and I am involved in GENEALOGY research on my Mother’s family. They came to America in the late 1880's and lived in North Dakota.
My Mothers Maiden Name was IRENE AUGUSTA MINTZ and her father was WILLIAM –(Bill)-FREDERICK MINTZ .
In my research of my Mother’s MATERNAL family I found my Mom’s old photo album and inside the back cover it stated that my Grandmother ADDIE HARRIET TURNER-MINTZ was born in 1900 in COGSWELL, (HARLEM TOWNSHIP) SARGENT COUNTY, NORTH DAKOTA.
I located the 1910 N.D. US Census and while skimming the records, I came across a listing for a Mr. J0HN UCHNER and his wife JOHANNA MINTZ-UCHNER.
The interesting part was that it not only listed them and their children living with them, but it also listed the Mother-In-Law JOHANNA MINTZ along with her two son’s ARNDT MINTZ and the youngest son WILLIAM F. MINTZ (my Grandfather) born in MAY,1900...
I also found in my Mother’s Photo album a photo of WILLIAM F. MINTZ taken in 1911 with the caption “ DADDY WITH HIS FIRST PAIR OF LONG PANTS, 11 YEARS OLD”!!
I know that FERDINAND MINTZ DIED JANUARY 29th,1910 just before the JULY U.S. Census was taken and I’m assuming that since her husband was dead and she was in mourning that JOHANNA MINTZ took her two sons to COGSWELL, SARGENT COUNTY (about 50 miles away) to live with her Daughter and Son in Law! JOHANNA MINTZ later re-married in March 1911 to JOHANN GEBHARDT.
I am also assuming (since this was a very small community) that my Grandmother ADDIE TURNER (who was 10)
and my Grandfather WILLIAM F. MINTZ, (who was also 10) were in the same class in school and that is where they met and connected!!
I have located my Mother's younger Sister's Family (DONNA MAE MINTZ-McMICHAEL Died in 1955)
but I still have not found my Mother's Middle Sister DOROTHY D. MINTZ-LENO-??.
I have found Ferdinand Mintz's Father (Karl (Munz) Mintz and his Mother ELIZABETH (EBERT)-EBERHARDT, both from Beresina, Bessarabia, South Russia.
With help from a wonderful lady in Germany, I have been able to locate KARL MUNZ-MINTZ's Father, MICHAEL MUENZ and Karl's Grandfather JOHANN P. MUNZ who went from Germany to Poland and then to Moldova/Romania/Ukraine/Russia!!
I am trying to go even further back in GERMANY (if possible) past JOHANN MUNZ b:29/04/1779 and his wife EUPHROSINA LANG B:1783!!
IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFO ON THE MINTZ, MUNZ, MUENZ family TREE, Please contact me at ..
docnaden@yahoo.com
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.....
My grandfather likely came from Kis-Kukullosard,now Soard, sometime in 1911-to 1915. His name was Jon or Janos. His surmame could have one of the above. He was born on October 25th, 1896(?) He had cousins that also left(Jon Ragula from Soard and Jon Tescula from Hejjasfalva now Vanatori). His name in America was John Sockaci. The pronuciation in America is "sock-ah-see". What are the pronuciations of the above names? What do they mean? Where would the records for Soard be kept? He was Orthodox. What about Austro-Hungarian passports or visas-are copies available? any response would be appreciated. Thanks

We are trying to obtan information on my grandfather. His name in america was John Sockaci(pronounced Sock-ah- sea here in America). We believe his name in Transylvania was Janos Socaciu or Socaci. He said the name in Transylvania was pronounced as So-kauch. Would that be true ? Since Transylvania was under Hungarian control, I was told that his name on the visa may a Hungarian version of So-kauch and be spelled as Szakacs. Would that be possible? He stated that he sailed from Hamburg but we do not know the port of entry. He supposedly was born in 1896 and arrived in 1913. We have searched the Ellis Island records for the above variations of his name but have not found anyone arriving at EI in 1913 from Romania or Hungary that is close to his age at that time. Any response would be appreciated. We are sending for his WWI military records, naturalization paper, and the 1930 census . Any advice or answers to the name question would be appreciated. He stated that his village was called Sard or Svard or Sward. We have not been able to locate it either. Thank you.

I am looking for Rebecca/Becky Kahn. She is the sister of my Bubbie's father Harris/Harry Kahn. She immigrated from Lithuania to London with her mother Anna, her brother's Harry, Benjamin, and Aaron/Aron, and her sister Pauline who was blind. Harris/Harry and Aaron set off for the United States sometime between 1888 and 1906,Harry settled in New York and married Gussie Coleman on 4 Oct 1906. According to my bubbie's memoirs, Aaron/Aron went on to Philadelphia, Benjamin, who was a furrier stayed in London to take care of his mother Anna, and his sister Pauline. While Rebecca
found a husband and emmigrated to Canada. Does anyone know anything that might help me find the rest of this family? I have been looking for them for two years, and can find no trace of them anywhere.
Thanks,
Kristen Darling

My grandfather's family came from the former Austrian-Hungarian Empire. His American name was Sacas, but I found an old letter written to his mother, Sacasius. The family is Romanian, and his name was pronounced SahKASH, probably written as Szakacs. I found traces of records in the Immigrations and Passenger listings. Naturalization records were zip for me and I found very little in the passport apps. I spent hours, and I do mean hours, going over the pax listings, but it was time well worth spent. Where did your family end up? Mine was in East Chicago and in Columbus, OH.

My great grandfather is Andreas (Andrew, Andy Shobel) Schobel. I found his ships manifest (1905)and it states he is coming to see his brother John (Jonas) Schobel who at that time was living in Sharon, PA. My g grandfather moved to Youngstown, Ohio about 1910. Was wondering if there was a connection. I know they had a sister Katherine Schobel who married a unknown Kramer.

My Great Grandfather and his brother left Romania ca 1892 & 1895 for the US. I have a photocopy of the brother's passport. Does anyone know if there is a source for Romanian passports? I'd like to get a copy of my Great Grandfather's. By the way, they were Jews from Galicia who went to the oil fields in Ploisti to escape the military draft.

Thank you,
Susan
