I'm looking for any information about my grandfather, Leon Mendel Herscovici. He had a drygoods store in Braila, named 'La Moldoveanu' and I would like to find anyone who knew him or his family. He died in 1948-9.

I recently found out that my grandfather Rube Arons (now 104) came to US from Braila around 1903 with his parents.
Until now I thought he was born in Canada. They did move to Toronto, then NY(great-grandparents died there) then Chicago and finally followed us to LA. I am trying to find Arons relatives, especially from Toronto

Great Grandparents (Braila)

I have been doing research into my family history and have discovered that my great grandparents on my fathers side lived in Braila before immigrating to the USA in around 1906. The family name is Deitler. Anyone from Braila know anyone with that last name or a similar like Dietler. Also anyone know where I might find historic records for Braila online? Thank you

I do not know much about the Braunsteins. My grandfather was from Braila. I think that there were Braunstein relatives.
I do know that after my grandfather got out of the service, he and Mr. Aaron and Joe Braunstein moved to Braunstien came to texas and opened a Furniture Business in about 1915. Mr. Braunstien was from Romania... I am sure of that. I am not sure what city because we have relatives that come from Bacau, and Braila.

If it helps at all, I just noticed the gravesite of a "Mendel Brownstein" in a cemetery outside of Philadelphia, PA. He died 2/23/1932. The cemetery is Mt Sharon in Springfield, PA, and his grave is in Section I, near plot 308 (my g-g-father's). Let me know if that leads you anywhere. Good luck!

Paul Batisto Stanculescu from Stancut or Sula (sp) in Dobrugea

I am researching my grandfather Paul Batisto Stanculescu (born 22 May 1911 and died December 1966.) He was the only one in our family (in Seattle) that spoke Romanian, so after he died we lost contact of that side of the family.

All little more about him - We know he had 13 brother and sisters (a few were adopted) and that his mother and father had about the same number of siblings each. He left Romania sometime in the 1930's. Before coming to the U.S. (first NY/Maine, then California, then Seattle), he served in the French Foreign Legion for several years in Africa and also fought in the World War 2 for America. As far as we know, he came alone to America.

According to his naturalization form he was from Sulee or Sula (sp?) in Dobrugea originally, there name Stancut is floating between the borthplace name and his mothers name, so it could be either. I'm am hoping its that town Stancuta, but I can't be sure.

His mothers name is shown as Zanfira or Zanfina Stanculescu and his fathers name was Batisto Stanculescu (possibly reversed on the form). My grandfather wrote his name as Paul Stanculescu Batisto on the form, but later in life always wrote Batisto as his middle name.

Does any of this sound familiar to you? Maybe from old family stories? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for Vasiliu and Zaharia Family in Braila

My Great Grand mother was born in Braila. Her name was Olimpia Vasiliu and had sisters and brothers (Fanica, Pavia, Elise, Alexandrine,Nicola and Costica). I know that Alexandrine married a man with Zaharia surname and had 2 child : Georgel and Jonel(Jean). Some of them have moved to Brasov and other to Sofia (Bulgaria). If anyone could help me to find informations of any kind it would be great.

Hi I have been trying to find out about my g.g.grandfather Stella Casaru. I have found him on the Ellis Island records, he was a mariner. I have now discovered that he was born 19/03/1888 Braila. He came to Liverpool, he was married here in 1911. His name on his death cert is Stella Sterian Casaru, his father was Stanciu a farmer. I would appreciate any advice on where to find out any information regarding his birth/family details in Braila.

My great-great grandfather was Hersch Braunstein, born in Romania in 1852. His wife Rachelle was born in Romania in 1854. They had at least seven children: Sarah (b. 1876), Hinde (1880), Chaim (Dec 20 1881), Clara (1883), Esther (1894), Schendel (1897) and Malke (1901). Sarah married Selig Feierstein (1871) and had five children. Chaim married Rose (Siegel?) (1891) in 1912 and changed his name to Hyman. He had four boys. The family lived in New York and Georgia. Can anyone with any information contact me? I would love to fill in the gaps in my research or to meet any distant relatives. Thanks!

I LOVE YOU! That's her. I had tried every variation of the spelling of her name, but I had never changed the first letter. Her father's name is correct as well. It's listed in the index that she was from Germany, but the manifest itself clearly says Roumania. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'm new at this (two months) and I guess I have a lot to learn.

I didn't know about being able to obtain the SS-5 Form.Now that I do, I will send away for it. Thanks again. I did have her parents given names & place of birth, but I never knew her mother's maiden name. It will be a nice addition for my document file. I have posted messages on jewishgen.org, for many of my relatives, but haven't gotten any responses. Are you a professional researcher?

Yes, she had a S.S.#, but that was under her maiden name.
I am searching for her immigration information. I have messages posted on several sites. I tried the stevemorse.org site, as well as those listed on jewishgen.org. Nothing comes up for anyone with that last name.

What I am searching for is a possible relative - somewhere - anywhere - that can shed some light on this.

The name Siberdi was was on her birth certificate (now lost by an older relative). I also have a copy of a letter my grandmother wrote, and she signed her name as "Siberdi" as well. I think she came through Ellis Island, but I searched other ports and have come up empty. In fact, I can't find a single soul with that last name. I can't find naturalization papers either. She supposedly immigrated to the US in 1907, when she was 16 years old.

I am seeking to find information on my grandmother who was born in Braila in 1891. Her surname was Siberdi, and I can't find a single soul with that exact name. I'm not sure of her legal given name, but her Hebrew name was Basha. Once she arrived in America, she chose the name Bessie (after experimenting with several others!)

My great grandparents Miriam Cohen and Raphael Goldstein lived in Braila, Romania during late 19th century. They migrated from Kolomea, Galicia (Poland, Austria, Russia, Ukraine). Nationhood of that region changed often. From Braila, they migrated to Liverpool, UK and ultimately moved on to Philadelphia, PA.

Sorry the given names you listed are unknown to me. I should have also said that the family was from Bacau, Romania and that their surname may have been Goldenstain. Family names were:
Alter-father; Sura-Rifca-mother; daughters: Amalia (my maternal grandnother), Fannie (Brownstein)l Bessie (Vinitz).
I said that they were frm Brila rather than Bacau in my original posting because they accompanied my Grandmother's family from Braila on their immigration from Liverpool to Philadelphia in 1907.

They were from Moinesht (sp) Roumania. I have tons of information to share. Laura, my grandmother had my father Albert and aunt Florence. Jack had sons Ronald, Alvin and Herbert. Betty had daughter Davida. Sam had a son named Aubrey (changed his name to Robert Aubrey from Aubrey Goldstein). Last was Uncle Mickey, born while the boat was docked at Ellis Island. Sarah wanted him to have a good American name - he was born in 1903, the day President McKinley was shot - so she named him McKinley Goldstein.
