I wanted to add and confirm information to may family tree. My grandmother was born in Petersdorf (near Bistrita) and I have very little information on her side of the family, The family name is Gubesch. My fathers was born in Bistrita. The family there is Schivanovits (Schiwanovits, Zsivanovits). I have information on my fathers side back to the mid 1800's where the family moved to Bistrita from Neustadt. I would like to find information on which Neustadt they are referring to. Brasov or Baia Mare. In Banat, for my mothers sie of the family, we are able to purchase cd's of the churchbooks. I would like to buy copies of the church books also for the Romania cities I am researching.

Dear Peter,
Thanks for your letter - I did not find the census as yet. I found the church records from the 1850's to 1911 for my family's town - they are very useful if you have records from 1911 onwards as you can trace backwards.

I am sorry I am not much help to at present and due to the impending birth of my first child I will not be doing much research for awhile.

Best of luck
Stephanie

Diana,
Bistrita (a little accent under the second t) is the Rumanian transscript of the original Hungarian name of the region, what was named Beszterce. The towns Beszterce (they are more in the Historical Hungary) and later county Beszterce (more later county Beszterce-Naszód) got names by the Hungarian namegiving traditions after bishop Beszteréd, bishop of Nyitra, who was martyr of the Roman Catholic Church. I do not know what the Beszteréd exactly means, that is an ancient Hungarian name. Naturally this name was Latinized in the Middle Age as way as more ancient Hungarian names To Bestridus. (Some examples only: Imre-Emericus, Sándor-Alexander, Kálmán-Colomanus, Károly Karolus, Sarolt-Sarah etc)
Otherwise your theory, why they got this name is exactly good. Probably they were originally Hungarians and named: Besztercei, because this is special Hungarian name-giving tradition. Then they have been "Romanized" because they moved to a Rumanian environment (Do not misunderstand, it was natural in the Hungarian Kingdom, what was a great melting pot of the nations)
Lajos Reich, Hungary

My Grandfather was Grigori Bistritan and his family came from the Suceava region. His father was Ion Bistritan. My theory is that one of their ancestors traveled from the Bistrita region, east to the Suceava region, and was given the name as Bistritan meaning "the one from Bistrita." I would like more information about the name Bistrita, and it's origin, as well as information connecting other family names to Bistrita.

Dear Joann,

by the way, where do you live? I can't get it from your e-mail address. I am Romanian, born and raised in Nasaud. Living in Houston for the time being. Ciresoaia is by far the largest cherry and sour cherry crop center in Romania. At least that is what I was told. However, the village has an annual cherry crop market called Tirgul de Cirese in Romanian. It is held sometimes towards the end of June, and is worth visiting it, even from as far as the American continent. Taste those cherries and you'll never wanna buy the Washington/Oregon crops again.
