Josef SCHMIDT from Pankota Hungary (now Romania)

I am trying to find information on Josef Schmidt (b. 21 Jan 1892 in Pankota, Hungary) and his family.

Here is what I know:

Josef's mother's name was Vilma. Her maiden name was either Furez, Purez, or Feher. She was born around 1874.

Josef also had a sister named Vilma. She was born around 1896.

In 1907, they immigrated to the U.S. and landed in NY on 11 May 1907. According to the Passenger list, they were going to visit a brother-in-law named Johann Feher who lived in Philadelphia, PA.

Somehow, Josef ended up in Chicago, IL where he married and eventually died on 13 Jun 1955.

A family member recalled asking Vilma (the mother) about her husband. Vilma would only mutter something in Hungarian and then spit. So we know nothing about him.

Any assistance or direction that can be given would be appreciated. I do not know where to find any information from Romania / Hungary to further my search.

Will try to have it fixed tomorrow.I can receive, but can't send)
Julius was my Uncle. He and my Mom have the same Mother, Viora Okolisan Peskan. He was "adopted" by my Grandfather, Mack Peskan. I've had such a hard time finding out info on him. Such a shame:>( My Mom actually lived with him for a while just prior to his death. Can't believe she knows so little about him. I tried to Contact Milan Opacich a few months ago. Read so much about him. Actually had a few emails with a reporter that knew him, but we both had bad addresses for him.
I bought an album, 'Jammin with Julius' recently. Milan Opacich was one of the artists. Sort of embarrassed to say, but I have no record player, so I haven't been able to hear it yet. Guess I'll have to buy one. I have very fond memories of my Uncle when I was young, then he just disappeared. Was told it was my Grandmother that caused it. That, I can believe!
You've already given me more info that I I had after years of research! I have now located family in Windsor. Julius' half brother, Peter Peskan, died a few years ago, but his wife is still alive. She may be able to fill in some empty spots. Maybe you'd have more luck than me. I feel like I could learn alot from her if only I could get back to Canada.
I would love to have a chance to talk to Milan!!
A favorite of Za Za? How great! I was told he was in a movie, but have been unable to figure it out. Would you have a clue?
Carla

This is in reply to an older thread. That thread was posted by a Carla Porter who was also looking for relatives named Peskan from Romania. Two first names were mentioned, Mack (father) and Julius (son). If this is the same quest, this may be of interest. Truly, I know very little—all of it second hand from a man named Milan who still plays in a Tamburitza band in the Chicago area. At one time, years ago Milan played with a violinist named Julius. He knew Julius quite well and was impressed with his playing (not a small thing given the quality of the musicians Milan played with at that time). Julius Peskan was from Romania, emigrated to Canada and made his way to the Chicago/Gary area and then went to California. I’m interested because Julius Peskan was one of the greatest of our style violinists I have heard. I don’t know if Milan has knowledge of Julius’s father or other relatives. It seems this thread of yours is old. If you’re still interested I’ll put you in touch with Milan.

Carla,
the name Okolisan is similary to name Okolicsányi, what is in Hungarian phonebook, but any variation of it (in Rumanian spelling it could be probably: Okolican) is not in the phonebook Rumania. Otherwise the other varieties of the name Okolisan/Okolicani/Okolicsanyi are from the historical Eastern Upper Hungary. It would be good to see any papers of your parents' grandparents' heritage. Sometimes an envelope is enough for the best direction........That Viora could not be Viola?
Lajos

I just found info on my Grandmother for the 1st time in more than 4 years of searching! I used the link you gave me (got irritated for a few minutes) and found all sorts of surprises! Her name was Viora (not Vera) Okolisan. She immigrated to Canada on Sept. 22, 1928, NOT in the 30's! Have already contacted a person in Ottowa, Canada about getting me the original documents. Haven't even made it through all of the different channels and I feel like I am on a roll.
Thank you soooo much,
Carla

Carla

I take it that the surnames existed being that people with those names passed thru Ellis Island.
The Social Security Death Index is listing 6 PESKANs and 8 OKOLISAN. The name changed came about after our ancestors were process. The manifests were written up at the port of departure.
http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
The USA White Pages are listing some Peskans and Okolisans.

It is possible that the surnames do not exist anymore in Hungary and Romania or only in a female line. Another possibility is spelling.

www.genealogienetz.de/reg

My post was not very well written. My Grandfather Peskan, his wife Amalia and their son Peter (who was born in Arad) came either to the U.S. or Canada sometime after Peter's birth on 8 Aug. 1923. They may have had a daughter named Lena at that time also. My Grandfather, Matei Peskan, had immagrated to the U.S. from Hungary in 1909. He later returned to Hungary (or went to Romania) sometime after 1917. There he supposedly met and married Amalia Petrawitz and gave birth to Peter. Amalia died and Matei married Vera Okolisan in Canada in the 1930's.
I know only these facts for certain.
I have been told repeatedley that the is no such name as Peskan in Romania or Hungary. I have been led to believe it was "made up" by US immigration authorities.
Do you know the truth about the name?
As for Okolisan, just hoping to get some info of Vera Okolisan and was hoping someone on this board new of some others that had immigrated to Canada in the 1930's.
Also would like to find someone that could help me with marriage and birth info in 1920 Arad.
Thank you so much for you response. I can't wait to go to the Links you provided!!!

Carla Deterding
i am at a loss as to where to go from here. I am looking for the family of my great grandparents. They were John Simon b.7/30/1873 and Barbara Dorner. b. 1881 They married on January 25, 1900. They had 3 children; John Frances b. 2/24/1905, Rosalie b. 9/29/1908, and Barbara b. 12/23/1910. All this occured in Glagowatz. John immigrated in 1914. Barbara and children followed in 1921 on the Rotterdam to New York. They lived in Tonowanda NY. Barbara listed her father Josef Derner (1856?) of L Ansgasse 268 as her person at home. John died on 9/3/1954. In his obit there is mention of a brothe, Frank, and 2 Sisters, Katherine and Eve.Barbara died on 9/7/1952. Her obit mentions that she was survived by three sisters and a brother in Romania. I am looking for any information about my great grandparents and their families in Glagowatz. I realize that this is a lot to ask and if you are unable to assist me perhaps you can guide me as to where I can look myself. Thank you for all your help. Linda

What was his parents name?

Any help you can provide is appreciated.

Re Antal Levay, I emigrated to the USA 1962 from Hungary. I have seen some old birth certificates of my great geand parents (Beke family name) born in KISIRATOS.
I remember some refrences to Veronica Kantor and also some Levay, but I do not remember the first name. I encourage my garndchildren to do some research. By teh way, to your question about the word MAGYAR, it means HUNGARIAN. For instance the official name of HUNGARY is MAGYARorszag. Orszag means country, i.e. Hungariancountry. I have talked to the Catholic Bishop of the area, and he said that Kisiratos is in his Diocese, and the cillage has a Roman Catholic Church. The native population is Hungaria, Also the name Levay is a well known Hungarian name, the y at the end means that the family was noble (title received some time from a Hungarian King). Best wishes Imre Beke, New York

I don't think she emigrated. They settled initially in Cincinnati, Ohio, but then went to Detroit, Michigan and worked at Ford.
Trying to trace roots in Romania, but don't know where to start. Peter Olariu's death cert listed Theodore Olariu as his father. Possible city is Curtici, Arad. My grandfather, Florian Ollar (americanized) is listed on Ellis Island as
coming from Revetis, Hungary. Florian went back and married
Esther Lajos and brought her back to Michigan. Esther had several brothers and sisters (John, Kalman, Peter, Sadie, Magda..), but I think her parents died when she was young, and was brought up by a sibling.

My husband's family --LEIFEL-- came from that area. I have not tried to do any research there. Do you know anything of a town named "Glogavitz"...it is in the Tamasvar region of Romania NEAR Arad...(Dracula country!!!)

we were there a couple years ago, but no time for Genealogy!
