I saw your family tree and noticed that you had my grandfather listed Ande Lochkos (Andrew Lochkos). He changed his name to Liotskos from Lochkoff, then to Lochkos. My dad and his family were all born in Dambeni, so I am sure they can tell you everythig you need to know. I beleive you have my grandfather listed as a child of his brother Vasil. Their mother was Cristina Lochkoff. I am was gald to see that you had my grandfather's brother's picture. I dont have one of him. I would love to compare notes as well. I attached a picture from my grandfather's passport.

Julie, My name is Kathryn Schroy and my e-mail address is katbaloo@sbcglobal.net and my mother was born in Geveglija, Macedonia under the name Georgiya Konstantinova Pandova Boyadijeff born in April of 1912 and was the daughter of Kostadin Pandev and Elenka Durova Pandova. They came over arriving in the Port of Ellis Island in New York on January 17, 1921. I already used the professor at O.S.UNIVERSITY to do the translations of mom's baptismal doc so I am covered on that.

I have a history compiled with my Aunt Blagnarodna who helped me with the details of them coming here.

My question is about my Grandfather, Kostadin Pandev (peter kostoff was his american name)and can you help with that? When Kostadin Pandev and George Petroff left Bulgaria with the idea they were leaving for North America. The people who sold them passage on a ship was actually leaving for South America. They landed in Buenas Aires, Argentina in 1912. As it ended up… Kostadin Pandev worked for a year as a night watchman and ate nothing but bananas as they were so cheap to buy. This caused Kostadin to gain 260 pounds.

They both finally found passage to North America and came to the United States in 1913. When Dad (Kay’s grandfather) came to Dayton, Ohio. That is all I have on Dedo. Kay

Good evening and thank you for your reply and yes I did enjoyed your pictures. I don't know if you are aware, but there are plenty of Vlachian blogs from Greece, where more pictures from the area can be found, even if the majority of the participants are from the Pindus lower area.
I don't know if you are interested.I am including some sites just in case you would like to take a look, even if most of them are in greek.

Thanks again

L.

http://www.vlach.gr/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemi...

https://www.facebook.com/groups/194994533883010/

http://vlahofonoi.blogspot.com/2010/11/blog-post_85.html

http://bastian.freeyellow.com/littlevlachcorner.html

I believe my grandfather was part of the Bitolia Society in Chicago ( if there was such a chapter ). My mother recalls going to picnics and events from a group she called Bitolia that my grandfather belonged to or was friends with others in the group.

Thank you so much for the information! Knowing a little of the history of Macedonia and Serbia helps me to understand the surnames. The ship manifest does show my grandfather's name as Donovic, but I have heard the name Donovski, back in my childhood. The only relative of his that I know of is his mother, Ana, from Macedonia. I hope to someday visit Resen and the surrounding area. It looks beautiful. I would be interested to know if the council member has an ancestor named Ana. My grandfather was born in 1898 I believe.

Again, thank you for posting this message. It is very difficult to research Macedonia from the USA.

Regards,
Lynn

Hi Jim, I think this might be of interest to you:

http://vlahofonoi.blogspot.gr/2012/08/brotherhood-community-...

"A ‘helping each other’ Brotherhood of people from Monastir (and around Monastir) was established in New York in April 1944, entitled «BITOLIA".

The establishment of this association didn’t appear to be a typical procedure. It served specific necessities at that time. As Anastasios Grouia (President at that time) mentions in the preface of the bilingual (in American and Greek) album, the goal of the Brotherhood is twofold: (a) the objectives specified in the articles of the association and (b) the strengthening of relations among the emigrants (from Monastir) and the provision of "financial and any other help to our brothers and sisters who got damaged because of the war that just ended”.
So primarily, the Brotherhood tries to bring fellow immigrants to America together and to keep alive their ties with birthplace. However, the economic size (of the association) gives the form of necessity of the visions of the new established association. The old World (Europe) is just coming out of the long period of wars and trying to recover. Immigrants from Monastir, who emigrated to seek better fortune in America, organized the brotherhood there and its main purpose is to collect money for those ‘affected brothers’ at home."

I was in Turkey and Greece last month.
Yes most definately my grandfather Bension Camhi was born at that time and that is about as far back as I can find. I am actively searching his family. I learned from the ship arrival records that when he came to the US lower eastside in 1919 he had a sister Ester Levy. My father Hyman Camhi came earlier.
Re: Macedonian Archives

What do you mean by * gotten access * exactly?

Vital records can only be researched in the archives in Macedonia and although I have not been there to research them I organized and helped someone send an official request for information and get all the permissions to research issued - information from vital and other state records ( school records, land ownership records) is subject to laws of protection of privacy and data, and there are additional permissions to be obtained if someone is not a citizen of Macedonia.

In former Yugoslavia to obtain information from state archives:

-You must send the state archive an official request ( these official forms in native language are available for almost all of the archives in the region online) , you must pay local administrative taxes and cost of a look up if the archive offers that as a service, you must provide if needed documents and official translation of documents in foreign language in order to obtain permission to get information from vital records at all (like proof that you are a descendant).

-If the archive does not have the service of researching on your behalf you can either travel there or hire a local researcher. In some archives you will have to make an official authorization for the hired researcher and have it stamped in the court as legal document.

- be careful with that and hire only someone who will know how to research the people from the same ethnic group like your ancestors best - there were many ethnic groups in Macedonia and the familiarity with records and knowledge of the exact archival sources in which to look for information is essential . The sources and records for different ethnic groups will differ in more than just the language or religion ( Macedonians, Serbs, Albanians, Greeks, Bulgarians, Aromanians, Turks, Jewish people all lived and emigrated from Macedonia).

- If you are hiring - try to negotiate a fixed fee with a researcher because often the work in the archive - if the researcher is not a sloppy money-grabbing person ignorant of any other relevant source of information except the vital records - takes days when the research includes all records available and tracking down a single family line in them.

My recommendation is to hire people like journalists or people who have published articles and heritage books on the family/ community that your ancestors hailed from.

State Archive of Macedonia catalog of archival holdings:

http://www.arhiv.gov.mk/index.php

- click on *Фондови и збирки*

and then click on *Водич - Централен дел*

to see the full listing of their holdings.

From what I can see there are miles of original vital records, school records, military records, land registers available for research - but not via ancestry.com :))))

contact them and ask about research requirements and possibilities:

address:

"Државен архив на Република Македонија"
ул. Григор Прличев бр.3
1000 Скопје
Република Македонија

tel.: +389 2 3115 783
fax :+389 2 3165 944

email : contact@arhiv.gov.mk

Also you should familiarize yourself with Macedonian language and its Cyrillic script if you are to continue to research only via the internet - one of the few sources of information available online are state digital libraries which have old newspapers, almanacs...

Digital library of Macedonia:

http://www.dlib.mk:8080/jspui/

Macedonian language:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonian_alphabet

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en
Does anyone know or has anyone ever gotten access to the Macedonian archives to search for family members? I've been trying to search this site but so far I have been coming up with nothing and the internet doesn't seem to have any resources that I can find to search Macedonian records.

My father comes from Brajcino his surname is Ristovski and my mothers parents comes from Egejska (Agean Macedonia) from Banista and Emborio. Their surnames are Sfetiko and Perov (Papadimitriou)

- I noticed for some people coming from that area surname and first name were switched by mistake. Try reversing them when you look through ship manifests.

- there are no publicly available period census records you could search to give you ideas. The testament to the price people of former Yugoslavia paid for their freedom from fascism is the fact that in genealogy of some ethnic groups, the Census of the Victims of War 1941-1945 can be used as general census resource, as virtually no family went unharmed. I would look through it for similar surnames in Macedonia/ Bitola area to see what original surnames that correspond to the one you need in their original spelling existed based on birth year of the victims.

- to google results in native languages, set your preferences to include pages in local ones ( Macedonian, Serbian, Greek, Albanian, Bulgarian).

- search for surname and place of origin using the Cyrillic script that Macedonian language uses.

-consider also phonetic traits of the native language , and the fact that original surname may not be spelled at all like the one used after immigrating :

HRISTOV is the original spelling of the surname that is pronounced closest to *CHRISTOFF . That family from Bitola is documented to have lived in Bitola in the beginning of the XX century, as well as HRISTOVSKI, according to the publicly available records.

HRISTOVSKI family also had people with first name VASIL .

Both families were ethnic Macedonian, and of Eastern Orthodox faith.

https://cp15.heritagewebdesign.com/~lituchy/victim_search.ph...

In immigration databases these surnames were recorded as Hristo/Hristov/Hristoff/ Hristovitz in people coming from Monastir ( old name for Bitola) and surrounding villages. Country of origin is listed as Macedonia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia... :

http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/engine/gold.php?uid=...

http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/engine/gold.php?uid=...

http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/engine/gold.php?uid=...

Hope this helps you find your ancestors and your heritage.

att: HRISTOV, HRISTOVSKI, from Bitola, source-official Census of Victims of War 1941-1945

Cyrillic spelling of these surnames:

ХРИСТОВ,
ХРИСТОВСКИ
from БИТОЛА

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en
Hi John,

Seems that everyone from Trsye either went to Canada or Australia! I'm sure there is a family tie somewhere along the line. My grandfather was Tsile (1908) his dad Georgi (1878) and his dad Sider (1851?). My great granddad passed away when my grandfather was quite young so I don't know a heck of a lot about that side. How are you tied to Peoff/Peov??

Can you email me instead of going through here (I rarely check this!)

trsye.genealogy@gmail.com

Thanks!!

One of the central motives in the "Golden Fleece" (Zlatno runo) epic novel by Borislav Pekić is the narrative of the Tsintsar history, from its earliest times through golden period of Moskopolje to its fall and the settling in the countries to which they migrated. It is a huge novel , seven books, each page filled with mesmerizing history and melody of the Tsintsar dialects. Borislav Pekić was himself of Tsintsar heritage.

The history is told through ancestors of main characters, who like layers of protective dust that covers historical sites over time, accumulate in the souls of the living descendants - on the roads that lead them further and further from their home, Tsintsars in this novel are always accompanied by their past generations who keep calling them, scolding them and loving them in vivid conversations across time and space.

Your reply reminded me of that . :)

If your husband reads Serbian/Croatian, this blog is great albeit short testament of the Tsintsar history and influence of its refugees from Moskopolje on the forming of the modern Serbia :

http://blog.b92.net/text/1466/Svetlo%20Moskopolje/

In the comments you will find many people posted brief biographies of famous Tsintsars of Serbia, and even prayer "Our Father" in native language.

You will need to look more specifically for resources and books about Tsintsars who settled and lived in Macedonia, but try to find and read about their history from their own minority sources and authors - just like elsewhere in the region, history of ethnic minorities is often misinterpreted and diminished in the sources of the majority. :)))

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZCl7-4_mZM&feature=relat...

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

I am anxious to watch the documentary on them (in serbian). My husband speaks serbo-croation and I am hoping he can help me understand it. I have some distant cousins who lived in Bitola until 1956 when they came to America. I am planning a visit to see them later in the summer. I am excited to see where my research takes me next.

P.S. your website is wonderful!

Spelling in records available from Yugoslavia of the surnames is SARFATI, ERGAS and KALDERON.

These families from Bitola were Jewish.

If you need information from the official Census of the Victims 1941-1945 on these or other Jewish families from Bitola or former Yugoslavia I will post it in the "Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society public research section , but due to the volume of the data it may take a while.

see also:

http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10006802

"Photographs of nearly every Jewish adult in Monastir, more than half the community, were collected by the Bulgarian authorities in the first half of 1942. These photographs have been preserved and identified and are now available in the Photo Archives of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and on this Web site. Though many of the Jewish inhabitants of eastern Europe were required to submit photographs for purposes of police registration, work permits, and ration cards both inside and outside ghettos established by Germany or its Axis allies, few of these photograph collections survived the war intact. The Monastir registration photographs constitute one of these rare collections. Because they have been carefully identified (probably by Jakov Aroesti, one of the few survivors from Monastir, in the late 1950s), they are an extremely valuable historical and genealogical resource.
nationality listed as Romanian is a mistake - given the area of origin and the other surnames you listed - *Craja* your ancestors were ethnic Cincari - Tsintsars, for some reason called in English: "AROMANIAN" .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aromanians

( see how easy it was for a census taker in 1930. to mistake AROMANIAN for ROMANIAN ).

Your ethnic heritage and history is rich and beautiful, and you should probably try to establish contact with their minority organizations in Macedonia for help and assistance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moskopolje

Both families are found in the records of Cincar school registers from second half of the XIX century spelled PALASI and CRAJA, CRAIA, CRAE. We will post an article on ethnic Cincars and their heritage in the research section of the Serbian Genealogy Society web site, where you will be able to download the transcripts of these records.

Church vital recors you need will be those of the EASTERN ORTHODOX church.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Orthodox_Church

Heavily persecuted over the centuries for being Eastern Orthodox, Tsintsars had a very particular ethnic custom that was present even in XX century of tattooing a cross on the foreheads of their daughters, to protect them from being taken and enslaved by the Muslims.

http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/8025/666pme.jpg

In the meantime you can see the post I made as a reply to request for assistance with ancestors of same origin on another board here , perhaps some of that info may be useful to you :

https://familysearch.org/learn/forums/en/showthread.php?t=14...

documentary (Serbian) about Tsintsars :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Q...#!

att: transcripts of names from the records of the Tsintsar schools XIX century, Bitola, women in traditional Tsintsari garments

Good luck with your research ! :)

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

surname was not shortened from TASSOFF .

TASSOFF surname is not an original surname found in the period records in Bitola and surrounding villages.

Passports and travel documents of many Slavic ethnicities were issued by foreign authorities in foreign languages and thus their surnames were trunckated, misspelled and even translated. ( ie. written using the spelling of Greek , Turkish, Hungarian, German, Latin language, not their native mother tongue) . So they entered as immigrants with already distorted surnames, which were then misspelled even further once they arrived.

Ethnic Macedonian family with original surname TASEVSKI is found in the records for the second falf of the XIX century in BITOLA area. That is the original surname you should be researching if you want to find information on your ancestors.

If you are googling remember that Macedonian language uses Cyrillic script :

TASEVSKI - ТАСЕВСКИ

BITOLA - БИТОЛА

because most of the records and newspaper articles from the archives , very important genealogical sources of information, will not be shown if you google using Latin scrip.

https://www.google.com/#hl=en&gs_nf=1&tok=FucyZ30o4-...

http://www.narodnavolja.com/archive.asp

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:hA8jv-N...

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en
Bitola Surname Help - Palla? Pala?

Please help! My great grandfather was born in Bitola in 1896 and his father was born there in 1862 (I believe he is buried there). My great grandfather immigrated in 1917 with the name Theodore Costa Pallas. In the 1930 census he listed his nationality as Romanian. Pallas is NOT a romanian last name. I know that my great grandfather had brothers and sisters that did not come to america (Doris, Lillian, Carmen, James and John are the ones I know about. Last name would be Pallas or something like it.)

I am looking for any information regarding surnames that are similar to Pallas (Pala, Palla, were names that my grandfather suggested but I have not had any luck).

My great grandfather Costa married a Maria Craja, but the name Sia has always been attached. Her father was Demot Craja. Could she have kept her mothers maiden name too?

If you know any information about possible surnames, or any information about a Costa Palla or Maria Craja and their ancestry I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks!

Re: Lerin (Florina) area

Hi, my grandparents migrated to Australia and are also from Florina. We go by the last name Dimtsis.. which could be connected to Dimitrov..? I'm not sure of anything, although, I know my great great grandfather was adopted into the Dimtsis family, which technically makes myself not a Dimtsis. I hope this helps.
I thought I'd post this because it is very hard to get any information on my family name as it is so unique!
