Hi Andrew

Did you have Michailidis family who migrate to Egypt in the late 1800's. I am searching for my father's family. My great grandfather Kosta was born in Paphos in Cyprus estimated around the mid 1800's.

Unfortunately, I am not able to provide any information about your family.

Hope to hear from you soon - Sophia
Wondering if anyone has contact with a Perlandoni or Perlantoni family in England? I am trying to find out more about the Perlandoni family who migrated to Egypt around 1880 - 1893.

Angeliki Perlandoni was my great grandmother who lived in Tanta in Egypt in the late 1800's. She married Kosta and had a son. We don't know if my great grandparents Kosta Michailidis and Angeliki Michailidou had any other children? A possibility from a previous marriage ?

Can anyone help.

Sophia

Hi Dawn

Thank you for your reply. Matching our family information will be difficult. Can you ask your family members to help with your search, such as mother in law, aunts, uncles and cousins? They may have an interesting story to tell you or have some old pictures lying around the cupboard.

My dad's family the Michailidis family migrated to Egypt between the 1875 - 1890's. My great grandfather's name was Konstantinos born in Paphos Cyprus and my great grandmother's name was Angeliki from Smyrni. We cannot find information if they had any other children and suspect that Michael was their only child. Possibly - great grandfather Kosta was previously married and had children from his first marriage.

They owned a successful Pandopoleio (grocery store in Tanta Egypt) that sold everything including alcohol, bread, cheeses, fresh and tinned food. They made cheeses. Our family owned several businesses in Cairo. We believe they were well respected, hard working and affluent. My grandfather went to university in Egypt.

Would you kindly ask your mother in law and family the following questions. I would like to see if they correspond with the following information, these are:

1. Extended Michailidis family who lived in Alexandria?
2. Owned a cotton business in Egypt?
3. An uncle who worked on the ships?
4. An aunt whose name was Athena.
5. What did the family home look like ?
6.Which part of Egypt did they live? ours lived in Tanta and later moved to Cairo.
7. Did your family work at Cafe Riche in Cairo.
8. Did any of your mother in laws uncles and aunts obtain a higher education or pursued their passion e.g. business, artist, nursing, teaching, writing or etc.
9. Do you have family photographs of your mother in laws family?
10. Did you have an extended relative who was a Cardiologist in Athens around the 1960 - 1980's? (possible cousin's son)
10. Did you have an aunt named Thalia Axelou?

Getting family information from Cyprus will be difficult, but don't give up. In order to find information about the family in Cyprus you need to find out the great great grandparents names.

A good place to start is at the Greek Patriarch of Alexandria in Egypt. There you may find your mother in laws family information - her father's birth or baptism registration and then back track if possible. On the baptism registration it will have the parent's name, origin e.g. cyprus, occupation, where the christening took place, at which church and godparent's name. Once you find the grandparents names then search for a marriage certificate in Egypt e.g. Alexandria. My parents did this when they went to Egypt and found my grandfathers christening information.

I don't know if our families are related, however lets see if we can put the pieces of our family puzzle together. Hope to hear from you soon.

Kind Regards - Sophia
Hi Sofia,
thank you for responding. We don't have a lot of information either but my mother in law was kept distant from her Michelides relatives. Her father definitley had brothers. We thought they owned a bar but maybe the translation was poor ....your information sounds similar. It wouldn't be a far cry that Yannis is one of your Great Grandfather's brothers. I wonder how we can trace it and find out?

Dawn

My great grandfather Konstantinos was born in Paphos in Cyprus.

We don't know if my grandfather Michael had any brother's or sisters. All we know is the name of the grandparents and origin of birth. We suspect that my grandfather Michael had siblings and extended family - such as uncles, aunts and cousins who migrate to Egypt in the late 1800's. My grandmother did not know much about the Michailidis family, apart that they run a successful grocery store/delicatessen and cheese factory in Tanta. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hi Sue,

Glad to have been of assistance. It's quite a find you've found, the file has a wealth of information in it. I noticed that it notes Grigoris John Markou was born on the 30/01/1902 in Stroumpi village in Paphos District, Cyprus. I wonder whether the Paphos BDM department can find a record of his birth?

Gregory's parents are noted as John and Eleni, with his mother Eleni (the Greek equivalent of the name Helen) coming from Yiolou village, just down the road, and also in Paphos district.

Gregory notes two sisters, an Anastasia and Maria, and hopefully that will make it much easier to locate him in birth records etc in Cyprus.

Kind Regards,

Anthony

THANK YOU !!! I followed up your lead with NAA and they opened the file and I bought a copy of it - it is fantastic. It has all the details I was hoping for and more. It even has a photo of my grandfather from his passport which is the only photo I have ever seen of him. The documents were his naturalisation application and investigations that were conducted at the time. It is now open for public viewing if you are interested.
Thanks again, Sue

Hello, Anthony!

Several of my ancestors lived in Nicosia (where many of my current relatives live today). My great-grandfather's family hailed from Paliometocho. Another branch of the family lived in Sisklipos. (a small populated area of Kyrenia).

I'm sure there are more places, but these are the main ones I've found (so far) in my grandfather's biography.

Thank you so much for replying,
Phoebe

Hi,

To be quite honest there aren't really any online databases with names, dates etc. In my experience after you've exhausted all the civil registration sources/church records - land records are the next best bet. The land's department was formed in 1858, and many places have well kept land files with details of heirs/dates of death of an inidvidual etc dating from 1895 to today in most places. Using land records has allowed me to get back to some of my 4 times great grandparents. However such researching, requires a certification from the village president or town mayor stating your relationship to your ancestors in order to enable you to perform historical searches.

What specific towns/villages are your ancestors from?

Kindest Regards,

Anthony

Hi GreekPom,

From what I've been able to find on the NAA (National Archive of Australia) database, I've located a possible record for National Status which may be your Gregory John Markos. If you search under RecordSearch-basic search in the NAA database you will find:

Markos, G J - National status
A659, 1942/1/5681
Contents date range 1943 - 1943

It'd be best to start with this record, and see what more specific information it gives about Gregory, particularly birth location as Paphos has a number of villages or is it Paphos town he was born at? Hopefully this Nationalisation record will have greater details that will enable you to make your search easier.

I can tell you that his name in Greek is rendered as Grigorios or Gregorios, and since Cypriots almost never had middle names of that generation, you could safely conclude that John was his father's name. All my ancestors and countless of records have this noted to distinguish one Gregory from another, by using their father's name as a middle name.

Gregory's name in Greek most likely would have been, Grigorios Ioannou Markou. Ioannis is the formal version of John in Greek, and Ioannou means son of or belonging to John. In Greek characters his name would be furnished as Γρηγόριος Ιωάννου Μάρκου.

Hope that helps. Moving forwward once you can confirm more details, parents names etc, specific locality/place of birth, you should write to the Paphos BDM advising them to search for your Gregory, providing as many details as possible.

Best Regards,

Anthony
He was married in 1927 to Coralie May Ryan and had 8 children; first a daughter then 7 sons.
I am trying to get information about his birth and early life details in Cyprus.
Thank you for you help so far.

Sue

I have been told that his surname was probably Markou / Marcou and it was changed to Markos.I would be grateful for any suggestions about how to find out more info.

Online Cypriot Genealogy Databases?

Hello everyone!

I'm an American teenager, and my dad is Cypriot. We've a huge amount of relatives in Cyprus, and thanks to their testimony and one of the biographies about my grandfather, I've all my second-great grandparents names from their side of the family, as well as locations of where they lived and so forth. However, as I live in America and can't visit every summer, I was wondering if anyone knows of good online databases for Cypriot Genealogy. I personally haven't found much. Perhaps people could post links in this thread for everybody's future reference?

Thanks for reading. Here are a few of my discoveries:

www.hri.org -- A news agency of sorts. While not exactly genealogical, it does have obituaries archived and so forth. When I searched my grandfather's name on Google, this site came up with obituaries, people talking about him...

http://www.talkcyprus.org/forum/archive/o_t/t_4348/cyprus_ge... -- Another thread about the same question.

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.eeurope.cyprus.general... -- Somebody on the message boards was helpful in providing contact details for those interested in acquiring birth/death records. Not online, I know, but there just doesn't seem to be very many online databases.
Hi. I posted the message whilst helping out a family friend. I haven't been in touch with her for a while regarding this family. Maybe if you let me know the names and dates you have, I could print it out and show her or send it to her. I know that some went to Egypt, and then her father came to Australia.
Nicholas became a British citizen and fought in the 2nd World war. He went back to Cyprus where it is believed he died in about 1988.
Does anyone know where you can find these details on the internet?
I would also like to try and trace any family he may of had in Cyprus.

He immigrated to NYC from Cyprus - went back to Cyprus to marry Marika Tryfonos from Nicosia daughter of Tryfon Theofanides and Elenko Lymbourides. I know quite a bit about her parents and siblings but I cannot find anything about Demetri. He did change his name to James in the US according to his SSDI information.

He was born March 21, 1898 in Famagusta, Cyprus. I have no information on his parents and I think he may have had a sister. I also think I remember hearing his dad died shortly after he was born.

If you know anything about Demetri or Marika I would love to connect with you.

Thanks!!!

Hi Belinda,

I'd also re-send them an email at larnaca.dao@lcada.moi.gov.cy in case you used the upper case L, as previously suggested.

From the written email enquiries I'd sent off to them, they usually respond back in writing in about 2 months time from the date of email.

Kindest Regards,

Anthony

Hi Belinda,

It should be easy to find your mother in law in the Cypriot Records, and most likely both her parents full names including her mother's maiden name.

Was your Maroula born in Larnaka town, or a village of Larnaka district? This is important as to determine where the record can be found. Each village/town has a corresponding birth/death register.

If your mother in law cannot be found be found due to an uncertainty in village or location of birth, she would most probably be found in a register of departing emigrants. If she left Cyprus in 1946, a record of her place of birth, name, parent's names etc is kept. My grandmother was not recorded in village books from 1914, but her birth and parents full names were ascertained in her 1956 emigration record when she left to come to Australia.

The best advice I can give you is to send an email or call specifically Ms. Olga Christoforou or Ms. Georgia Sovarou from the District Administration Office of Larnaka. Their contact number is as follows; 24 801 868. Be sure to add 357 country code before this number. They are both very helpful and have sent me responses and copies of records to my written and email enquiries.

The postal address of Larnaka District Administration Office is;

Plateia Evropis, T. Th. 40103, postcode 6301 Larnaka.
their fax number is 24 304 644
and their email is Larnaca.dao@lcada.moi.gov.cy

It will be vital to tell them all of the following details;

Your mother in law's name; Maroula Varnarva Christofides (written in Greek as Μαρούλα Βαρνάβα Χριστοφίδη)
Date of Birth (Ημερομηνία Γέννησης): 02/08/1929
Place of birth (Τόπος Γέννησης): Larnaka
Date of Emigration (Ημερομηνία μετανάστευσης): 1946

Hope that I have been of some assistance.

Kindest Regards,

Anthony
