Dear Phillip,
Thanks for your note. I (Lois Flaherty) am the one who posted the message about Lotzkars. Since then, I’ve been in contact with a few people and have gotten a lot of information which I’ve entered into my family tree. My grandmother was Adele Lotzkar, one of your grandfather’s many sisters. I’d be happy to share what I’ve done so far. If you send me your e-mail address I’ll invite you to view the tree. You may write to me at loisflaherty@gmail.com.
Good to hear from you.
Lois
Brent, I've also been working on Lotzkars. My great grandparents were Sarah and Samuel. You can see what I've done if you go to "Flaherty whole family tree." Search for Lotzkar.
I've put in some information about the West Coast Lotzkars.
I haven't figured out the connection between the East Coast and the West Coast Lotzkars yet but I am sure they are connected. It is a pretty unusual name and they almost all came from Bulgaria (a couple came from Romania but that is pretty close. My grandfather Lazar Teitelbaum, who married Adele Lotzkar, was from Romania. He brought many of the Lotzkars to the US.

Re: Lotzkar Family

Scott,
I only started working on my family tree recently but have put a lot of information on Ancestry.com (the username is JohnFlaher).
I think Morris Lotzkar was probably the brother of my grandmother Adele Teitelbaum, so would have been my great uncle. The information I got all suggests this.
Records about Morris include:
1915, 1920, 1925, 1930, and 1940 Census reports
1918 WWI draft card
1942 draft card, listing his birthplace as Sielstra, Bugaria and his age as 59, address as 1939 Fulton Ave, and birth date as 8/16/1883 (various approximate dates appear in records but there is a specific date in the WWII draft record)
His date of arrival in the US was 1905 or 06 (it is given as 1900 in one document but the same one (1915 census) says he had been in the US 9 years.
He is listed in the earlier records as a furniture salesman and and probably eventually had his own business (1918 draft card lists him as a furniture dealer, and 1942 card says he is self-employed). However, the 1940 census lists him as a manager in a floor covering company. There is a business listing in the NYC phone book of Lotzkar and Ritter. His first wife was named Fanny Ritter—so either they were in business together or perhaps it was her father
He was married twice, first to Fannie Ritter and later to Miriam (or Marion) Reichenbaum and had four children, Rose (or Rashel), and Albert with Fannie, and Frances and Stanley with Miriam. All four children lived together so perhaps Fannie died. Miriam’s father Raphad Reichenbaum lived with the family.
Frances is listed as age four and living in an institution in the 1925 census. But later (in 1940) she was employed as a saleslady in a bakery. And she subsequently married and had children, one of whom has a family tree on Ancestry.com. She told me about Morris’ being married twice.

Addresses include:
1915-2794 8th Avenue
1925-
1940-1857 Washington Ave, Bronx
1942: 1939 Fulton Ave, and 4031 3rd Ave (business) in the Bronx
I have a note that he died in Phoenix Arizona in 1987, but I don't know where I got this information.
The farthest back I have been able to go is to my great grandparents, Schmniel (Samuel) and Sara (Sarah) Lazar, who were brought to the US from Bulgaria by my grandfather Lazar Teitelbaum.
There are some Bulgarian databases but they are not on-line as far as I know. But if anyone is aware of more information please let me know.
I too wondered about the Seattle Lotzkars, of whom there seem to be quite a few. It seems so anomolous that one would have ended up there when everyone else was in New York.
Lois Flaherty

How to go back farther...

I have been doing my family genealogy for several years now and have had a lot of luck with all of the branches except my paternal grandparents. My grandfather was Crist Nickoloff (possibly Hristo Nikolov). I know he was born in Sofiya, Bulgaria in 1890 and fled to "White Russia" at some point, from which he emigrated to the US in 1915. I know nothing else at all about him. I know about the same for my grandmother except that she was born in Poland and immigrated into the US in 1912. Without any other info, how do I go back any further? Where do I start? Thank you.

Can you please guide me?

I am searchig for the family of Jana Gencevova (Genceva)

In 1963 she was living at no. 6. Septembra street N 32, Sofia, Bulgaria

We do not know her date of birth but estimate this to be around the 1900’s

She was originally Czech and at some time had acquired Bulgarian Nationality

Jana Gencevova (Genceva) had two sisters Frantiska Masova and Marie Hyblova.

They three were the daughters of
Anna Jenišova who died in Prague on 2 June 1962

Search and Unite has researched in many countries in this world, but never before in Bulgaria. We have the added complication that we do not have anyone who speaks your language.

My questions to you pease, and my request for your guidance, if you would, are:

How can I find out in Bulgaria what happened to Jana Gencevova (Genceva) after 1963?

How can I find anyone who may remember her?

She is probably dead, so how can I find her death certificate, whether she had children, what family she had - anything that will lead me to the legal heirs of Jana.

I would be most grateful for your guidance in this

Yours sincerely

David Lewin

Re: Bulgarian Protestants in USA

My grandfather,Basil S. Keusseff, was a Bulgarian Protestant minister who immigrated to the United States in 1901; his wife, Neda Kaftangieva, their two children, and Neda's sister Penka followed in 1905. Basil Keusseff had studied at a college in England and, after several years of work in very small Baptist churches in Bulgaria, began working with the Disciples of Christ in the Pittsburgh area (Pennsylvania). He was later (about 1910) called to take over the work of a minister in Chicago whose health was failing. One more child was born in Pennsylvania; the two youngest were born in Chicago. I believe my grandfather left the church in 1920 or 1921, either shortly before or shortly after Neda died. If you would like more information, please contact me.

I tend to think that the family you mentioned in your posting had nothing in common with Bulgaria except probably one family member staying for a while in Sofia as part of a German company or diplomatic mission.
So seems you do not need to research the family here, in Sofia.
Additionally Dorang is not Bulgarian family name.
I wanted to help since I am journalist in a leading BG paper which since 2002 has series about finding lost relatives around the World and contact them with their Bulgarian relatives. But seems your case has nothing in common with Bulgaria...
A
Alex, I suppose the post should have said Sofia Area. I have a letter from Michail Dorang to a Robert Dorang signed and dated 4.2.1970, Sofia. Michail evidently saw an article written by Robert Dorang in BUSSINESS WEEK and contacted him. Thia letter appears to be a second letter which, for unknown reasons, was never answered by Robert. I am married into a Dorang Family from Germany which may be related to Michail's family. In the letter it says Michail's Great-Great-Grandfather 'Mihail' Dorang, born 1850 in Nemetcomlot, a German village near the town of Apatin- had a brother names Peter. Further back, that 'Michail' Dorang had (a father named 'Mihail'and his father was named Peter. I have researched my husbands family back to a Peter Dorang born 1844 in Bavaria, where in Bavaria I do not know. I can not find how he got to America either! The 1880 US census says he came in 1856. I can't find him in the 1860 or in the 1870 US census. Howeverm in 1880 and from then on this Peter Dorang and his growing family are listed in the US census. This has been a rock wall for me for some time now but finding this letter may put a hole in that wall! Do you know of anyone named Dorang in your area? The letter says "one point is very important: Dorang family does not know a case when two generations are staying at one and the same place. Even now the movement is obvious (you are not an exclusion in that respect). So I would not be astonished if somebody tells me that my earliest ancestors came from the moon." As you can see he certainly had a sense of humor. Robert has been dead since 1999. I was given some of his papers at that time but just recently decided to see what was there and found this letter. The letter also states that a sister of, Michail the writer's, grandfather who was living in Bucarest and was 90 at that time, said that there were Dorang relatives in America and he "should try to find them." He said that Grand - Auntie of his found him through the Bulgarian Red Cross Organization. They had been seperated since after the First World War. Her husband was named Rudolph Greff. Her origin was the town of Linz, Austria. The letter says he is not giving ALL details but enough for Robert to get the picture.
This is a lot of information to get in one paragraph, but I do hope you have gotten the picture, as Michail said. Please forgive my not knowing how to express myself in your native language. If indeed your are part of the family I would enjoy learning your language!
Louise Dorang

Dorang Family - Sofiya

M Dorang or any of his relatives. I have just found a letter dated 4.2.1970 from you to Robert Dorang now deceased. I would like to know more about the family, please. Your letter was lost until very recently. Where is Nemetcomlot, the German town you said was near Apatin? Is it still there? My husbands Great-Grandfather, Peter Dorang was born in 1844 and you mention a Mihail Dorang born in 1850 who had a brother named Peter Dorang. The US Census for 1880 says my Peter came from Bavaria. You said the area of Nemetcomlot was in Austro-Hungaria at that time, so it could be we are related!

I do hope the family uses Ancestry and will get this message or perhaps someone knows of this family and will get the message to them. Thank you. Louise Dorang
