Thanks for your response. Eshter Shtirka Theodor is not a relative, but she was a friend of my husband's grandmother, who named a daughter Esther in honor of her friend. Somewhere I have a photo that I would dig up, if it happened that a descendant of hers were to discover this series of posts.

So many ancestors and relatives, so little time !

Susan

I followed up myself after posting and e-mailed the Moody Institute Alumni Office. I got two very prompt e-mail replies from Millie Benson as follows:

1. Dear Susan,

I looked up Shtirka Theodor Pelasheva in our older database and found that
she attended Moody Bible Institute for one school year from August, 1908 to
May, 1909. She did not graduate. Alumni keep in touch with Moody purely on a
voluntary basis. We have no records of where she went after Moody. I'm sorry
I can't help you more. Have a great day.

Millie Benson
Office coordinator
Moody Alumni Association

2. Regarding Miss Pelasheva, I happened to remember an old alumni directory
from 1920, and I found her name there. Apparently after returning to
Bulgaria, she married a Mr. E. T. Radoykova. Her address around 1920 was
111-x Dimiter St., No 14, Rouschouk, Bulgaria. She became a teacher. So
perhaps that helps to "flesh" things out a little.

I also have discovered that a postcard to her from Bulgaria has turned up and is mentioned on the message board for Ohio, Lorain County where she would have been a student at Oberlin College at the time. I was unable to access the image at a different site, but that problem may be fixed by the time someone else tries to do it. Search on PELASHVA and LORAIN and you will likely find the message.

Pelasheva, "Esther" Shtirka Theodor: b. 29 Aug 1882, Haskovo> Oberlin College, Ohio

A photo of Shtirka, who is unrelated to our family, turned up in a collection of family photos. Don't have it in front of me at the moment, but it must have been shown as taken in Oberlin, Ohio, where a number of my husband's family, it turns out, attended. In 2001, I had written to the Oberlin College Archives about family associated with Oberlin, and also asked about Shtirka. The Archives responded with her birth date and place, that she studied at Oberlin College from 1905-1908 in the Class of 1909, but left to attend the Moody Bible Training School in Chicago, IL. (Oberlin Archives letter shows her as born in "Haskovo, Bulgaria."
Also just discovered a letter from Shtirka to my husband's grandmother, Ethel Patterson Hopkins, thanking her for money to go toward her tuition, and for naming Ethel's baby daughter Esther, after Shtirka. So Esther must have been a name Shtirka took on. Shtirka was likely a friend of Ethel's younger sister at Oberlin, Faye Patterson. This is all I know about Shtirka, but am posting it in case it is of use to someone. I've also placed her data in "thefarm" family tree at www.rootsweb.com, even though she does not connect to anyone else in that tree by way of being family.
I seem to have such a dead end in my geneological research....no name
for the Germanic/possible also Russian origins. I feel I have to just
keep posting in Germanic research areas until something clicks. This
is all I have:

Schwarz family or Schwartz or formerly longer?
Andrew or (Andrea) m. Carolina Magdelina Steiner (Stirn or Weiny)

Must have arrived US or at least in Iowa 1860's cuz not on earlier
census

Children:
Mike, Wilhelmina Augustina, George (1868-1874) Magdelina (1869)
Catherina Maria and Ludovica Magdelina (1871, twins), and John Peter
(1873)

Andrew remarried Catherine Steiner (Katharina Sweeny?)
Children:
Lidy (Caroline) Rosina (1875) my grandmother
William and Anna Barbara

(unsure if related: cuz Father is listed as Frederick Schwartz and
Katharina Seeny..) Jacob (1878)

Dated records from Catholic Church in Lansing Iowa, originally in
Latin, translated. Allamakee county Iowa.

I know only that there are Germanic origins, Russian. Andrew was
supposedly in the German servide and died in it.so must have returned
to Germany? No documentation other than these baptismal records and a
gravestone for George.

Not listed in 1850 or 1860 Allamakee county census.

Later the family (after death of father?) must have relocated to
Minneapolis MN, that is where my grandmother married her husband
George Waters. And I met her sisters Mary and Louise (twins
americanized) and Barb and Lena as a child.

Val Waters

I am from Nashville TN. Originally raised in Mpls.
I am looking for my family. I don't know where they are or who are alive.
My parents came to Brasil as soon as the second war had finished. The year was 1950. Both of them died in 1990. My father's name was Ewhen Grabas, his birth was in Ukraine and my mother's name was Maria Grabas her birth was in Bulgaria. They married in Germany.
My father's parents: Stefan Grabas and Ahafia Pawlyszyn
My mother's parents : Afanasy Swirgunow and Natalia Stejlowska. When they came to Brasil they went only with their five sons, no one else. My father told me that his brother, named Peter, went to Canada.
Please, I don't know how to do to find anyone, and where they are. I need a lot of help. I am alone in this journey. Thanks, Olesia.
