Trazim (looking for) Selim SELIMOVIC (b. 1918,d. 1990)

Seeking more information on my great grandfather, Selim Selimovic, especially about his parents who I know nothing about. Selim was born in 1918 in Cerska, Bosnia-Herzegovina and died in 1990 at age 72 in Cerska, Bosnia-Herzegovina as well. He married Melka Selimovic (I do not know her maiden name), but she was born in Pobudje, Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1919 and died in July 2007 at age 88 in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. I do not know what year they got married.
They had 14 children, I still don’t know many of them but their last names include Velic, Selimovic, Pehratovic, Mehmedovic, Korkutovic, and Kuljancic. My grandmothers name was Hurija Selimovic and she married my grandfather Jusuf Pehratovic. Hurija died during the war in 1992 and Jusuf passed away in 2007. They are both buried In Cerska. More information would be extremely helpful about Seliim Selimovic and his parents.

Any information you have would be appreciated greatly.

Hasudin Pehratovic
University of Connecticut- Storrs
Searching: Velic, Selimovic, Pehratovic, Mehmedovic, Korkutovic
Right, sometimes his birthplace is listed as Hungary, which makes sense because of the Austro-Hungarian empire before that. Thanks again.

I'm trying to find the location of a town where an ancestor was born and raised and which he left to come to the US. His nationality is given a Croatian. The town, from 1891 to 1913 or a little later, was called Prapotnik, Yugoslavia. Spelling of the town varied. Any help would be appreciated.

OK. I might be replying 11 years later, but this perhaps could be of some use to you.

I know several persons with the Sarcevic (Šarčević in Croatian) last name. The two most prominent nowadays are both in Sarajevo, and their names are: Ivan Šarčević (a Franciscan, professor of theology and editor of a Catholic monthly magazine "Svjetlo riječi". He can easily be contacted by e-mail, just google the magazine) and Abdulah Šarčević (a philosopher, also from Sarajevo). Ivan Šarčević's family is originally from the Zvirnjača Mountain near the town of Prozor and the Franciscan Monastery of Rama-Šćit, Bosnia and Herzegovina (perhaps you should search their church records that go well into the 18th century, I believe). I believe that John Malkovich, the actor, traces his roots to Zvirnjača as well. Ivan Šarčević's family nowadays lives in Požega, Croatia.

Also I have a good friend that goes by the name Šarčević, so I can bring you two in touch if you'd like.

Interesting. Perhaps you should also investigate the MARKOTIĆ last name, because it could just be a variation of MARKOTA. Surnames like that were treated as synonyms in the past, for example. In church registers one can often encounter two different surnames (e.g. MATUKA & MATUKIĆ) for the same person, depending on which priest entered the information.

Maybe you should get acquainted with first names and naming customs among ethnic Serbs so that more things make sense during your research:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en/documentation/naming-customs-a...

*Mopa*

MARA female first name spelled in CYrillic script = " Мара" .

I've seen that *Mopa* mistranscription , usually from headstones, appear several times on these boards :)

Ethnic Serbs mostly changed their names to closest English equivalents phonetically after immigrating.

Brothers/ male cousins often married widows from the same family - to take care of them . KRULJ families from that area ( Hercegovina) are all related. :)

SPASOJE GIORGIO KRULJ

Serbs have no middle names - what was written as middle name is the first name of the father. Possible original first name:

ĐORĐIJE
ĐURAĐ
ĐURO
ĐORĐE
ĐUKA
ĐOKO...

Given the first names of people in the family KRULJ from RANKOVCI village, first name of Spasoje's father was

ĐORĐE - that is the only variant which is found in records for the XIX century there.

RADKOVIC

original surname that was present in that parish / neighbouring parishes is

RATKOVIĆ.

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en/documentation/guide-researchin...

- "which may be the 2 brothersDusan KRULJ age 16 and Dusan Jovin KRULJ age 17 destination NYC both to the same address. "

Two brothers would have under NO cirtcumstances have carried the same first name. The blood relations in Serbian language are worded differently than in English:

-sons of two brothers ( cousins) are called if literally translated * brothers by uncle* -which is often mistaken for actual *brothers* by non-native speakers. Their families would have been at the time living in the same household.

-that would also be in agreement with the naming customs , two brothers had sons that they named DUŠAN each, in honor of their common male ancestor like father, grandfather.

- MIHAJLO KRULJ, son of SIMA, born in 1896. was killed by the ustashas in 1941 together with many other members of KRULJ family in RANKOVCI and other nearby villages ( DUŠAN KRULJ born in 1892. son of JOVO KRULJ, who also came back that someone else mentioned in this thread, was killed on the same day and in the same location -Kapavica guvno ) .

Age listed in manifest is in most cases is not accurate for men - they were either using papers stating that they were older- old enough to travel, or that they were younger because they did not want to stay and serve in the Austro-Hungarian occupying army obligatory military service.

Most of the early XX century immigrants of ethnic Serbian origin returned to the old country.

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en/documentation/guide-researchin...

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

"My Grand Aunt, lists his birth date as March 10, 1889. She also lists that he came to the USA when he was 16, that he was sponsered by a scientist named Pupin."

He was probably sponsored by the Serbian National Foundation in America, of which scientist MIHAJLO PUPIN was the president . Either your grand aunt or someone interpreting what she knows made a slight error there - Pupin and your ancestor were of common ethnic Serbian origin, not from the same area/village. :)

"In America, in 1909. MIHAJLO PUPIN established one of the oldest Serbian emigrant organization – Union of Serbs - “Sloga”. The organization had a mission to gather Serbs in imigration and offer help, as well as keeping ethnic and cultural values. This organization later merged with three other imigant societies.

Other emigrant organizations in to one large Serbian national foundation, and Pupin was one of its founders and a long time president (1909–1926))."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihajlo_Idvorski_Pupin

Mihajlo Pupin had, besides that, been the benefactor of many other ethnic as well as his own private charities that sponsored children of Serbian immigrants in the US:

KOLO SRPSKIH SESTARA
SLOGA
SRPSKA NARODNA ODBRANA

Contact the current Serbian societies to see if there are any records like the ones that exist for the similar organization he sponsored in the old country - Serbian Trade Association "Privrednik" ( "The Merchant) :

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en/documentation/serbian-trade-as...

For info on these organizations and help with contacting them I recommend this lady and her awesome website on culture, heritage, traditions and life of ethnic Serbian immigrants:

http://www.babamim.com/

http://www.babamim.com/contact

*JOVIN* - your question regarding this : "Is Jovin the native spelling for Stephen?" - No, it isn't.

- Serbian language has a different grammar - there is something called grammatical case:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_case

*Jovin* - this is simply the first name JOVO spelled in case with different ending and additional meaning

*JOVIN* = * of JOVO*, as in

KRULJ DUŠAN JOVIN

meaning

KRULJ DUŠAN (son) of JOVO

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

The point made in my last post re sharing of passports is that you would find the immigrant arriving under another name. If the Naturalization papers give a ship name then you could look page by page looking for a COA number to match the one you have (if you have one), the former residence, Race, etc.. Once it took me 3 years to find a man name Stojan Demich whom we had a COA for. I first searched for Race or People for anyone identified as Servian or Croatian, then finally by former residence, which was Bielo Voda Croatia... using Stephen Morse One Step Ellis Island search I searched the ship of arrival metioned on the COA, which was the Cleveland, on a certain date in 1913, then searched for all males from a place beginning with Bie.... no first nor last name and found Petar Kukoleco.... and their was Stojan's COA number ! Kukoleco appears in that part of Croatia... but I found no other trace of such a person in the US.... besides we had Stojan's Naturalization papers.

Robert

Sharon

Those arrival dates or years as found on census records are perhaps the least reliable, the info was given at the spur of the moment, Bozo probably did not supply that info himself.

Even the NA papers arrival may be incorrect.

The manifest pointed out in this thread has a notation above the occupation column dated 4/6/36, the numbers before this date are first the INS District which "appears" to be 21 which in 1936 was Portland, OR includting Siskiyou Co CA, Southwest ID, OR (except Lake Co), WA (Clarke, Cowlitz, Klickitat, Skamania, and Wahkiakum Co)

The remainder of the numbers 8524 correspond to a Certificate Of Arrival issued at that time. This was done to ensure the immigrant had been in the US long enough to apply for Citizenship

If you have a COA for Bozo check the number.

It was also NOT uncommon for immigrants to "share" passports.
On his naturalization application it states that he arrived April 16, 1907 which is rather coincidental that you found a Bozo Raic arriving on September 16, 1907. I appreciate your help. I am looking further, as I think I saw another date on a census for him as Michael Raich having lived in Minnesota and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have found several spellings of his last name from Rajich to Raic, to Raich. I don't know what the original spelling is. Thanks Sharon

I don't have much to go on even a ship's manifest. All I could find was the application for naturalization papers, that was turned down and don't know why. He was either Serbian or Croatian. Married to Theresa Balogh, or Balok, one daughter Mary. The only living daughter never knew where they came from, the wife Theresa possibly came from Slovenia. Thanks for any information.
Sincerely, Sharon Raich

The mother's name or origin is unknown. Mentions of descendants in the article: son EDHEM Komadina born 1903., grandson by the name of Mustafa Komadina, grandson Mustafa Braca Komadina. It also states that his immediate descendants are still taking care of his memorial, so I suggest you try to find them in the town of Mostar for more information.

details in the interview on Komadina/Voloder:

http://www.tacno.net/Novost.aspx?id=4055

Historical archive in Mostar as well as central archive in Sarajevo must have a lot of documentation and holdings on such a dignitary.

I can't point you to any specific records searches on Voloder as this would depend on ethnicity/religion and that surname is prevalent in all three Bosnian communities. :)

Information on Voloder families that may be of interest to you is that they settled in Cernica district of Mostar in 1822.

source reference:

"Prezimena su uzimana na osnovu prikupljenih podataka iz raznih porotokola, sidžila mostarskog i blagajskog kadije, zatim raznih tapija iz turskoga perioda, rođenih, vjenčanih i umrlih, te sa epitafa sa nadgrobnih spomenika.
Both families are from Mostar town (the Komadinas in question are descended from Mustafa Kemal Komadina who was the Mayor of Mostar in the 1890s/1900s). The Voloders are also from Mostar town.

The primary person would be Mustafa Kemal Komadina and his descendants.
You can only access the vital records in municipal offices and archives in Bosnia, searches are not available over the internet. There may be some old religious vital records transcripts posted by individual temples, but usually this type of information on surnames and villages is found online only as a part of analysis of historical documents or books on history of a village or a town.

If you can read resources in local language make sure you search using the full orthography of surnames and place-names.

For Bosnia the Military records and censuses from AU empire are located in Austria military archives and Hungarian National Archive in Budapest. Some materials are available in Bosnian archives too. No online searches I am aware of.

Family Search does hold many microfilms of both vital records and military lists for the area.

I will post here later if I find anything, more precise location would help - were they from Mostar city or the surrounding villages?

Hello,

I am helping a friend research his family tree. He is a great-grandson (through his mother) of Mustafa Komadina from Mostar. Does anyone know if it is possible to access the birth, death and marriage records in Sarajevo online? For the other records, we may have to access them through the Austrian archives perhaps?

Additionally, he is searching for information on the Voloder family, also based in Mostar for the past few generations.

Any assistance would be gratefully received. We are able to read records in English, German and Serbo-Croat.

Thanks in advance.
