I'm trying to locate information on my grandfather. I have very little to go on. He spoke very little about his past. The notes I have on him are thus: he was born circa Apr 1893; his mother died when he was about 2; he had a brother who was in the army and fought against the Turks; his father said there was going to be a war in Europe and so sent him to the U.S. with an uncle possibly around 1907; he mentioned Dubetzka (sp?) and Beograd.

Once in the U.S. he took the name of Daniel March. He didn't remember what port he arrived at but the first place he remembers is St. Louis, MO. From there he went to Montana then St. Paul, MN and finally to Sheldon, WI.

I do have his Alien Registration Form. On it his name is Markow Jakowicz and his place of birth was Bosna, Jugoslavia. However, this form was applied for in 1940, 33 years after he arrived in the U.S. so I don't know how accurate it is.

I have checked Ellis Island records and also the "Passenger & Immigration Lists Index" by Filby and could find no person by that name or a similar name.

Does anyone know if immigrants from this part of Europe were likely to go to a particular port? Maybe New Orleans?

Any possibility anyone knows about his family?

Thanks.
