Rojc is a very local surname, even for Slovenian circumstances. It's roots are more or less linked to Primorska region (Seacost region) - from Nova Gorica (Slovenia) on the north, where even a small village exists with name Rojci (Rojc plural), to Slovenian Istria on the south (Koper or even into Croatian Istria), to Slovenian minority in Italy on the West (Trst) and Ilirska Bistrica on the East. Of course, you can find it elsewhere but probably because of emmigration process. According to my family legend our surname is coming from Goriška (Gorica region on the north), from where one of our ancestor came.

Name Castelnuovo comes from Italian occupation in the period between I. and II. world war (1943) and is result of changing all the names (even personal) into Italian version. Thus, it is very unlikely to be linked with Herceg Novi (Montenegro) but most certainly to Podgrad near Ilirska Bistrica (Slovenia): However as many Slovenians, fleeing after occupation into Yugoslavia and USA, Canada, Australia..., excersised their military duty in Yugoslavian marin forces and Herceg Novi is a port in Montenegro - ex Yugoslavian republic, HN can not be 100% ruled out. But in my opinion the probability is far less than 1%.

I've heard till now two versions of origins of Rojc surname - first is linked to Celtic language, when Celts rambled here around (4th - 3rd ct b.c.), whilst second is linked to verb "rojiti" -> to swarm. According to this Rojci should be landscape name for many small springs "swarming" out of the ground. I would bet on the second explanation, however it could even origin from both, as land names in Slovenia origin from variety of languages (Old Roman, German, Celtic, Iliric, Slavic...).

Despite the fact that I am coming from a place very close to Podgrad -> Zabiče (about 25 km distance; living now in Ljubljana), unfortunatelly I have no Rojc from Podgrad in my familiy tree, but I could ask my parents on first occassion, if they remember somebody from there...

Best regards

Roman Rojc

I am looking for birth information for Elfrida Culjak
DOB: 24th June 1942
POB: Bijeljina Bosnia
Mother: Amalia Hlouschek Culjak
Father: ?/Culjak

I would dearly love to find Elfrida Culjak birth information and information on who her father was. His surname was Culjak first name unknown, he came from Bijeljina also. This guy was in the military in WW2, not seen by wife and daughter again as they were told he had not survived the war, but he had! They left war torn Europe and it was not until 2000 that information made available the story of this poor man never seeing his wife and daughter again when he returned home! This story is about my mother Amalia and my 1/2 sister Elfrida, my mother died not knowing the truth about her husband being alive all these years and my sister not knowing who her father was.
I know this story is a saga, but it is the truth and we would dearly love to be able to learn more about Elrifas father Mr Culjak!
If you can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please note, I only want people to reply that have integrity, dont waste my time otherwise.
Thank You
Helen Herfurth

My Grandparents lived in Lebanon but were apparently married in Steelton. At least that is where the church the record comes from is.

Supposedly the US would not allow him to come here because he served in a foreign military. I have no idea if that is accurate or not. As I said it's family lore.

You must be looking at the marriage record of somebody else. The marriage certificate I have (which I don't think I posted) states that his place of birth is "Otoka-Krupa-Bosna".

Are those Baltimore records on line? I would like to look through them. Thanks

Did they live in Lebanon or Steelton PA?

Are you saying that his home country would not allow him to emigrate (to leave) to the US? Or are you saying the US would not allow him to immigrate to the US?

His marriage record states he was born in Austria, in which case all men were obligated to serve 2 years of active duty, beginning in the year where their 21st birthday occured. However if he had NOT served the authorities would have not allowed him to emigrate. And as far as the US many men who served in foreign armies came here.

I would not keep the family lore from hindering your search. Not to say it is not true, but that you need to allow for the possibility that it not accurate.

There are several VEJNOVIC who arrived via Baltimore. Including, this person who went to Lebanon PA (the Ancestry transcribers erred he did not go to Cleveland) Not a long time Croatian genealogist gave the correction to the surname, you can find her info if you can access the Baltimore records.

Name:	Mico Vynovic
[Mico Vejnovic]
Arrival Date:	Mar 1906
Age:	18
Estimated Birth Year:	abt 1888
Gender:	Male
Race:	Croatian
Port of Departure:	Bremen, Germany
Ship Name:	Roland
Port of Arrival:	Baltimore, Maryland
Destination:	Cleveland, Ohio
Friend's Name:	Rade Begovic
Last Residence:	Iloka, Hun./Croatia

The 1920 census states Mico arrived 1912, checking few years either side of 1912 finds 3 male VEJNOVIC.

Thanks for all of the information. It will take me a while to sort through all of that. My Grandparents were married in the US in 1913 so he was not affected by the 1918 influenza outbreak in the old country. My grandfathers name was Michael (Micha) and would have been born probably in 1887. He came in through Baltimore but I don't know exactly when. According to family lore he was not allowed to emigrate because he served in a foreign military so he came in on his deceased brothers papers which makes that even harder to to trace. I can't seem to get my jpeg scans of the uniform photo and family documents to load so I'll add them later. I suspect there is a size limit to uploads.

Suggestions where to start:

-a book based on Serbian Orthodox Church censuses from years 1882. and 1898. by Đorđe Janjatović : "Prezimena Srba u Bosni" ( Surnames of Serbs in Bosnia ).

-and here:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/documentation/guide-researching-e...

-and here:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/documentation/serbian-trade-assoc...

-and here:

http://www.rodoslovlje.com/forum

http://www.poreklo.rs/

You should also provide any documents you have (ship manifest, naturalization records, records of Serbian Orthodox Church after emigrating if they belonged to it) and dates - year of birth, year of emigrating.

For the picture you really need to post it so that someone can date and identify the uniform accurately.

As for *the plague* - that could be referring to the Spanish flu 1918 epidemic which decimated the population or some other epidemic of anything other than plague like cholera or typhoid.

Last outbreaks of plague in the region I have found in records were in 1762. in Sarajevo, in 1796. in Irig and 1818. in Montenegro.

I have found in records family with original surname VEJINOVIĆ in Otoka village, Bosanska Krupa. That family is ethnic Serbian and Eastern Orthodox.

In the same area there was also VEJNOVIĆ ethnic Serbian family, with largest branch living in Benakovac village, Bosanska Krupa.

The other surname you are asking about is spelled originally LOVRIĆ and the ethnicity and religion must be confirmed based on the exact place of origin. There were large ethnic Serbian LOVRIĆ families living in several villages of the Bosanska Krupa area in second half of the XIX and first half of the XX century.

Good luck with your research! :)

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/
According to family documents I have my grandfather was from Otoke (or Otoka) - Krupa. His parents were Lazar Vejnovich and Julika Lovrich. He was listed as a widower on the marriage papers so he may have a marriage record in the old country. To further confuse things family lore says that his first family died in a "plague" and that he came to the US on his brothers papers. I have a picture of him in a military uniform that has the Serbian double headed eagle on the belt buckle. Any suggestions as to where I could start searching on this?

My second last name is Kardum, and I've been told that my great grandfather was Serbian, was Orthodox and nowadays the family live in a city close to Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina, but they are not bosniaks, actually there is a republic inside bosnia just for Serbians called Republika Srpska.

What earlier origin before arriving to the Balkans and when are you interested in ?

What makes you believe that a surname created following a very standard and quite regular pattern of formation among ( very Slavic) Serbs - that of surnames formed from a nickname denoting a personality or physical characteristic - had originated anywhere else and was already formed as a surname somewhere other than the Balkans ?

Onomastics and etymology are serious scientific disciplines and *kalaba* is a word that belongs to an entire thoroughly studied and researched semantic field of words in all (Slavic and other) languages of the Balkans that are based on the root word *galabä* borrowed from the Arabic and in them used to denote - noise .

Earliest surname variant derived from this word among ethnic Serbs was recorded in 1476. in Serbia (KALABIĆ), and earliest documented derived toponym is from year 1444.(KALABOVICA), also in Serbia.

KALABA in that exact spelling is recorded in historical sources as surname in XVIII century in Serbia. I have to check the earliest documented occurrence as surname in other countries and regions and will post you that information here as an update.

The mistake I see so often made on these boards is to assume that if the root word of a surname is from a particular language then the origin of people must be the same ( like if a word is from Turkish language then the people are of Turkish origin, or Italian, or German or Hungarian...).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loanword

Loanword "vampire" originated in Serbian language and spread via German and French into many other languages across the globe - based on that one could then assume that all vampires were/are - Serbian. :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire#Etymology

I suggest that if you are looking for the answers on origin or etymology of any surname to first checks relevant etymological dictionaries of the original language.

For Balkans and surnames from it the etymological dictionary authored by Petar Skok is still the most relevant resource, when consulted and cross-referenced with other more recent and more specific databases ( like the onomastic database of the SANU - Serbian Academy of Science and Art).

I posted more on etymology recently here:

http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.ceeurope.austria.gener...

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

As Kalaba isn't a Slavic surname, I'd like to ask if anyone knows where from did they come to the Balkans? Turkey is the first thought, but I wouldn't know for sure...

She's hoping this trip will happen in the future.
Yes looking for family here as well as in Croatia. Hope your still on this board, contact me at kaune@scicable.com
Thanks Robert

At long last some pertinent info to help people of Serbian ancestry. I have followed Rodosovlje over the years and must say that they are now doning a very nice job of gathering and compiling info and web pages. I especially enjoyed the business database and the pictures of Serbian nosnija from Croatia.

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

As they were listed as Slovenians and had given names which would have been found in Slovenian, one may suspect they were from Castelnuovo, aka Castelnuovo d’Istria, now known as Podgrad
which is located 40.6 miles SSW of Ljubljana

http://www.mapquest.com/?le=t&q=45.5217%2C14.1461&zo...=

Ethel does not sound like a likely name in that part of the world

Robert

I am looking for European information on Johan Louis Rojc (born November 1875) and Anna Ursula Rojc (born October 1875 – maiden name Luzar).

According to Ellis Island records their birth location was Castelnovo, Yugoslavia which I believe is now Herceg Novi. On both of their naturalization papers it just indicates Austria as birth place (Austrian Empire). According to Ellis Island records they arrived in March of 1909 and went to Bridgeport Ohio.

I know they left behind an adult son from a first marriage named Ivan or Evon Rojc. His mother’s first name was Ethel and I was told she died around 1906.

No known other family members came to the United States. Any family information or verification of birth location would be greatly appreciated.

If the Colorado Family is yours as stated in Robert's post, obituaries can be found and ordered from the Pueblo County Library. I looked the family up and the "j" was removed from the last name. Krasna rather than Krasnja. In MOST instances, I have found the obituaries very helpful and in others it's minimal.

Hope this is helpful.
