Surnames: Lukov, Lukof, Lukoff
Searching for information on this town or settlement. Did it exist in the 1700s? Oral family history indicates my Jewish family from Kievska gubernia (Lukof, Lukoff, Lukov) originally came from a town of the same name or very similar. This most certainly would have been in the 1700s or early to mid 1800s perhaps. The only other town of Lukov I find - in Russia - only became Lukov in the last century. There are at least five lines of Lukoffs who "originated" in or around Cherkassy oblast, who emigrated to Philadelphia. DNA testing shows that these lines share a common ancestor many generations ago. I would love to know if we perhaps originated in the area of Belarus? II remember my grandfather also saying we came from "white Russia".
