Wisoke-Litovsk (Vysokoye) surname VILNER/ WILLNER

I am trying to learn the name of my grandmother's mother. Aharon Leib VILNER was my gm's step-father, but I do not have the maiden name of my ggm and am unsure of her given name. It may have been Chaya. Her father died young and all I know about him is that his given name was Abram and his surname sounded something like "PETRUSKITZ." My gm was Sheina Feige, b. about 1865. She married Shmuel DAIBOCH and settle in NY City in 1902, where my gf changed his name to Sam FEINBERG and my gm used the name Fanny.
Is anyone familiar with this family?

Pruzina looks very much like Pruzhany to my eye - a town near Brest, Western Belarus. With that in mind Tulovshina might be the village (20 km east of Pruzhany) whose name was badly transcribed.

A

Translated by a friend of my brother, Grandfather Demasuk's 1907 passport says he was from Tyloshuzin village, Hradleshkoy province, Pryshishuko district, Nikitishkev region. Where would that be, and where might any records be located?

I'm hoping to get the original back so I can get the actual Russian. His declaration of intention said Pruzina, if that's any clue.
My relatives came to Canada from Belarus in early 1900's. I found them through the Canadian government archives in a section called Immigrants from the Russian Empire. There are lots of documents and there are excellent records that had to go to the Russian Consulate. The USA seized documents from all the Russian Consulates and released them to the Canadian government several years ago. Equally good records should exist in the US because they have the original records.

I have looked up the name Matw**chuk (using ** for wild card letters) and found two that might give you a lead. (Spellings can vary wildly) It would help if you knew what town they came from and also if they were of Orthodox faith, or Catholic. It had to be indicated on the form. You might find original photos in the file. Documents they had to fill out were in Russian but sometimes there is some English on it, or a letter saying where they are going in Canada. These 2 might be relatives. Some of mine came on ships that landed in USA.
Hope this helps. Here's the link.
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/li-ra-ma/001046...

Click on the name, and when next page comes up, click on 'VIEW' at top left , to see each document in the file. Top right will tell youhow many docs are in the file.

Price/Prus family! Help me find them!

Hi all,

I'm trying to track down my family and I'm working with limited information. I don't know my biological father, and it's his lineage I'm tracing. Here's what I do know:

Max Price was my paternal great-grandfather. I DO know that he was born in Russia in roughly 1897. I have a record of him living in New York with his wife, Belle (born in Colorado to Russian parents) and his two children, Edwin (b. 1924) and Maylene (b. 1926). Max's records show that he was considered a US veteran and worked for an army story when he was in his 30s. Edwin went on to marry Marion Janke and the two had my father, Richard Jon Price.

I THINK it's possible that this family tree is attached to mine, but I can't be sure. http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=:18887...

If ANYONE has ANY information about this family at all-- no matter how small, please fill me in. I want to trace my great-grandfather's family as far back as I can.

Thank you SO much!

Hi Sarah,

My grandfather Shlomo SHNAJDER (Solomon Schneider) was born in Brest in 1911. Brest-Litovsk part of Poland until WWII when the border shift moved it under Belarus jurisdiction. I believe all of the records are in archives located in Belarus...see Miriam Weiner's website at http://www.rtrfoundation.org/index.html.

There is a Brest SIG hosted on Yahoo! at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brest_belarus/. Maybe some other members are researching the same names. You'll have to be registered with Yahoo! Groups to access the SIG but it's free of charge. The group got together a while ago and hired a researcher to copy and translate brest records located in the Minsk archives. I'm not sure if there are plans for another project like that. That's how I got my grandfather's birth record and also birth records for some of his siblings and his parents' marriage record (which of course led me to other towns). It appears that my family was only in Brest for 30-40 years with my grandfather leaving in 1928. Supposedly he lost about a dozen cousins in the Holocaust but I don't know how, when, where, or even who.

Good luck in your search.

Sharon Klein
Acworth, GA

I am looking for any information on my relatives. My great grandfather was Joseph Frederick Kivovich, dob 1855 and he supposedly lived in Brest-Lituvsk (Greuden). I am not sure of the spelling but he was supposed to have left in 1886 with my grandfather and immigrated to the US. I have found one Joseph Kivovich but it would appear that he brought along his wife (Annie nee Factor) and ended up in St. Paul, MN. The story that is told is that he left behind a wife and two daughters when he came in 1886 however he came over with Annie in 1882. Would anyone have any information on how or where I could go to see if there are any records showing where they lived, etc. Norman D. Ackert

Hello All

My Grandfather Milton Faikes/Fajkes was born in Brest Litovsk in 1913. He had other siblings that were born earlier also in that same area. How does one research that. What resources are out there. I have utilized JRI-Poland and Jewishgen but come up with nothing everytime I try to search his name. What area was that town in. What is considered in Poland or in the Belarus Region.

I would love to find birth and marriage records pertaining to my grandfather, his siblings and his parents but have been unsuccessful thus far in that respect. I only have records of the time period after they were in the US. My grandfather did not come to the US until 1932 according to his passport which was never used after that. His sister came over in 1922 and was the one who helped him come over as well as their widowed mother who came over in 1928-29 and died in 1944.

I have the mothers death record which gives me the name of the father, but it does not tell me when and where he died. So, if anyone can offer help and advice please contact me.

This is the first time I have come across this name. The birthplace of Brest-Lituvsk still seems to be the right place. Any help I would appreciate it. Shalom, Norm

Info re: early days of Nazi occupation in 1941

With the permission of the coordinator of the Brest district research projects on JewishGen, I'm posting this information that she sent me:

The most detailed account of what happened on the 10th July 1941 is by Prof John Garrard in his work "Barbarossa's First Victims, The Jews of Brest".which was published in the Journal of East European affairs, Vol 28 no 2 1998-99.

Although there was random murder, torture and shootings from the first week of the German invasion (June 21 1941) - the SS conducted a more 'organized' major round up of Jewish males on July 10 - Garrard cites an eyewitness named Heinrich who was a German policeman who escorted
the victims to their execution at a site described as being south of the town, past the fortress, about 15 minutes drive from the center of Brest. There were 12 large pits dug.

This Heinrich estimated a total of 6000 males were killed that day.It is unlikely that there was any list of names of these victims... this group included the prominent members and leaders of the Jewish community. Garrard questions the figure of 6,000 and thinks it could have been closer to 10,000. He also cities the eyewitness acount of Michael Omelinsky, who was a boy at the time. this account is in the Black Book. It is clear that the Germans singled out the leaders of the Jewish comm. professionals, teachers, artists, Zionist officials, communists and any Polish army members - Jewish and non Jews, for execution.

I got my copy of the Garrard article from Garrard himself -if you go into the Brest ghetto site there is a contact for him -
he originated this database...However, this was 4 years ago, so I don't know if it is still current. When I asked for the Ghetto 'passports' from the USHMM in Washington, they also
sent me a copy of the Garrard article, archives@ushmm.org.

I'm reasearching the SCHNEIDER/SZNAJDER and TUCKER/TOKER/TOKAR surnames in Brest.

My g-grandfather Morris/Moishe and g-grandmother Jennie/Sheine (nee TUCKER/TOKER/TOKAR) came to the US in the 1920s with their children Meyer, Solomon, Rae, Lillie, and Max. Solomon is my grandfather. Morris had a brother Samuel who also came to the US. The family started out in Paterson, NJ and moved to Brooklyn in the early 1930s.

My grandfather married Pauline PROPPER in Brooklyn 1934 and she died not long after in childbirth. He then married my grandmother Bessie BERGER in 1937, also in Brooklyn.

If anything looks familiar, let me know. Thanks
