With the permission of the coordinator of the Brest district research projects on JewishGen, I'm posting this information that she sent me:
The most detailed account of what happened on the 10th July 1941 is by Prof John Garrard in his work "Barbarossa's First Victims, The Jews of Brest".which was published in the Journal of East European affairs, Vol 28 no 2 1998-99.
Although there was random murder, torture and shootings from the first week of the German invasion (June 21 1941) - the SS conducted a more 'organized' major round up of Jewish males on July 10 - Garrard cites an eyewitness named Heinrich who was a German policeman who escorted
the victims to their execution at a site described as being south of the town, past the fortress, about 15 minutes drive from the center of Brest. There were 12 large pits dug.
This Heinrich estimated a total of 6000 males were killed that day.It is unlikely that there was any list of names of these victims... this group included the prominent members and leaders of the Jewish community. Garrard questions the figure of 6,000 and thinks it could have been closer to 10,000. He also cities the eyewitness acount of Michael Omelinsky, who was a boy at the time. this account is in the Black Book. It is clear that the Germans singled out the leaders of the Jewish comm. professionals, teachers, artists, Zionist officials, communists and any Polish army members - Jewish and non Jews, for execution.
I got my copy of the Garrard article from Garrard himself -if you go into the Brest ghetto site there is a contact for him -
he originated this database...However, this was 4 years ago, so I don't know if it is still current. When I asked for the Ghetto 'passports' from the USHMM in Washington, they also
sent me a copy of the Garrard article,
