"Görog keleti" in records in Hungarian language denotes Eastern Orthodox faith - as in Serbian Orthodox Church or Romanian Orthodox Church.

All of the surnames and first names of non-Hungarians would have been in 1904, year that the marriage record you mention is from, changed from the original ones to the equivalents in Hungarian language - so keep that in mind and try to find what the original names and their spellings were ( the religion tells you that these people were not ethnic Hungarians, and this town had a significant presence of ethnic minorities of Eastern Orthodox faith - Serbs, Romanians and even Bulgarians - as indicated by the name of it you used - *Szerb-Nagy-Szent-Miklós* which literally translates as *Serbian-Big-Saint-Nicholas*).

István - equivalent in English of this first name is Stephen, in Serbian : Stevan / Stefan, in Romanian: Stefan.

***

"Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

Hi, I am looking for any information on the Márián family from Szerb-Nágy-Szent-Miklós.
This is what I know...
Religion: görög keleti, could be Greek Orthodox but more likely Romanian Orthodox.
My great grandfather was: Márián István (in his marriage record in 1904 in Szeged, HU he is recorded as Varicsán helyesseben Márián István, I'm guessing somewhere along the line someone messed up the spelling and he was stuck with the correct and incorrect spellings).
Date of Birth: 03 July 1877 in Szerb-Nagy-Szent-Miklós
Father: Márián Szintea, master miller
Mother: Galetár Zsofia

Can anyone give me any further information?
Thanks

Brickwall for GG Grandmother - Anna Rheimschneider (Reimschneider, Riemschneider)

My GG Grandmother Anna Rheimschneider (Reimschneider, Riemschneider) came from The Banat migrating to the United States in 1897. She was born 5 March 1840. Supposedly she and Mathias Ehrenreich (her husband) came from Josefsdorf according to the immigration records from Dave Dreyer. Anna married Mathias Ehrenreich (Ernrich, Ehrenreigh) (I don't know the date). I have found some data that says she was born in Billed, other that she was born in Klek. As a result, I do not know the names of her parents or any of her siblings. I did look up the name Riemschneider in Geogen and I found a large concentration came from the State of Thueringia.
I would appreciate any information on her.
I checked with the USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for Naturalization Papers for her and Mathias. they do not have them. According to the 1920 census, Anna was naturalized in 1915. Since Mathias died in 1919, we do not know if he was naturalized. Beside the USCIS, I did check with some departments in Banat, Michigan where they lived; they did not have the records either.
Dave Weinfurtner

Re: Beck and Osztovics connection

Emerik Beck was listed as a brother-in-law to my gr-grandfather, Pal Osztovics. Pal had many siblings as did his wife, Maria Tallien. If there are any Osztovics or Tallians in the Beck family that would be a great start in my search. It's possible that Emerik was just a nice man who sponsored people too! Emerik's wife was named Amelia. Other names are John (@1828) Joseph (@1859) Alexander (1864), Franz (@1862) Elizabeth (1901) and Josefa (a child of John's). The names vary a lot in spelling. Emerik came to the US (MD) in 1894, my gr-grandparents in 1904, Alexander and much of the family also in1904. The Beck family may have come from Hungary--but I think that this area was part of Hungary at this time so that may not be helpful. My ancestors came to Pancsevo from the Burgenland, which is now in Austria. Thanks so much for any info you can give me!

Yes, you have to view the records in the PANČEVO historical archive. Most municipal offices ( matični ured) have made complete copies too available to be researched on site on CDs.

The archivist from Pančevo informed me that the listing on their website has not been updated, and that all vital records of all denominations from the territory it covers are on microfilms.

To research these films, you need to either go there or hire someone. There are legal permissions you will need to obtain in both cases from the local government because you are a foreign citizen and data from vital records is protected by privacy laws.

The staff are prepared to do a lookup submitted to them through an official form for official fee, but only for individuals people and specific dates - you cannot submit a question to *check if there is anyone with surname Beck* in their records.

You may wish to consult some other unofficial existing database rather than maunicipal offices and state archives for that kind of research - if your are not interested in obtaining accurate and official transcripts, and scans of the original documents.

Serbian Genealogy Society SGS"Rodoslovlje"
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en

"How could I find more information on who lived in this area?"

-By searching the original vital records. Historical archive of Pančevo has these available on microfilms - the vital records books themselves have been returned to the central authors of all denominations :

http://www.arhivpancevo.org.rs/fondmfde.htm

-by searching secondary sources like trade and tax records, school records, military records, local newspaper and land ownership registers.

-by locating and contacting community resources and heritage groups if your ancestors belonged to a specific ethnic group - cultural and ethnic associations, present-day minority council.

Serbian Genealogy Society SGS"Rodoslovlje"
http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en
My great-grandfather left Pancsova with his family for Baltimore and his brother-in-law, Emerich Beck, was his sponsor. Emerich left Pancsova (then part of Hungary, I believe) in 1894. I am wondering what the family connection is since I've never heard the name Beck mentioned. How could I find more information on who lived in this area?

Klek was never occupied by german troops in WW1 - only at WW2!
it was part of austrian-hungarian Empire from 1867 - 1918.
1918 - 1941: Klek became a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (this would become Kingdom of Yugoslavia after 1929)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klek_%28Zrenjanin%29
http://www.im-banat.eu/

Vojvodina - also read for the time-period 1941-1945 at "Serbian and Yugoslav administration"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vojvodina

"and there is a stamp at the bottom which has the German Eagle"
can you load up the document in german for taking a look on it and seeing the "german eagle" and what is written?

Perhaps your 1942 document had something to do with events of 1941

Apr 6, 1941 Bombs fell on Belgrade, on Palm Sunday, April 6th, Germany’s army attacked and all Germans became the object of hatred of the Serbian people.
German Language Document from Village of Klek 1942

I have recently come into possession of an original 21st August,1942 document, entitled "EHEMATRIKELAUSZUG" which is, in fact a record of the 1919 marriage of my husband's maternal grandparents, in the village of Klek. We already knew this information.
However, the interesting thing is, the document is entirely in German (not Serb or Hungarian) and there is a stamp at the bottom which has the German Eagle in the centre. Klek was occupied by German Troops during WWII and I was wondering whether the German authorities did some kind of a check on the inhabitants of Klek before or during this occupation? Or did they for some reason, just need a copy of their Marriage?
Thanks to anyone with any insight into this.
Kit

Please try this site as it will help you identify the modern name of the cities your ancestors left. After the WW II, the bitterness against Germans was intense, and many of the names were changed from the German tongue to their modern names. In Leibling's case, though, this does not seem to have happened.

This site I suggest has the German name, the Serbian or Romanian name, and the Hungarian name. For example, for Leibling, you will discover the name barely changed at all---it says:

Liebling* / Liebling / Liebling, Kedvencz

If you believe they came from Billed go to freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~banatdata/DDB/By/Village/Billed.htm or look up "Emigration from Banat in teh National Archives Ship Records" by David Dreyer. This man went thru thousands of ships manifests and listed all those who left the villages with the date of departure, ship, final destination, birthdate, parents and spouse. It is indexed by village and Billed is one of the villages. There is also a familybuch, family book, for the villages. My family is from Parjamosch and in the course of an evening was able to get generations of my family all the way back to 1726. This is a treasure trove!

I was told by my father that the z at the end of my name is a hungarian plural. thank you for clearing that up. as to that being my Mathias I will have to look the records up because neither my father, nor his brothers and sisters could remember anything about him but his name and that his Wife was named Elizabeth. if you have any other information that may help me please let me know. thank you
Vern

Vernon,

German Geist means... ghost or spirit... while Geiz means stingy or miserly.

What do you mean by Hungarian plural? SZ is simply a character in the alphabet which has a sound like esz, versus es for S and ze of Z.

Can I assume that Mathias was the son of John (Janos) and Gertrude who settled in Cincinnati OH? If so John's WW II Draft Reg gives his birthplace as Billed, Hungaria... which was in the old Banat and if this is the family they arrived via Canada to the US

Biled, aka Billéd, Billét, Billiet, Bille located 269.6 miles WNW of Bucureşti 269.6 miles WNW of Bucureşti

The link below will take you to a Banat genealogy web page, which includes Billed

Robert

I know that the Geisz surname is a German name (Geis,Geist, Geiss, Geisse, etc...) with a hngarian plural (z). I think that my great grandfather Mathias Geisz came from the Banat region but am at a brick wall with this person. if anyone has any information on Mathias or the etymology of the Geisz name I would be very appreciative.
Thanks
Vernon

Does anyone have any information on any of the Wagner family from the Banat area? My 4X grandfather was Georg Wagner born 1746 in Bitburg, married to Agatha(?), migrated to Stefansfeld through Vienna. Trying to find out when my grandfather, Josef Wagner, son of Mathias Wagner and Katherina Ziway, came to USA with his brother Anton. Josef was born October 16, 1882 and Anton was born April 26, 1885 in Stefansfeld. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Lois Wagner Sensibaugh

Yes - I am looking into that region.

My family (Rastatter, Steitz and Jochum) all came to US in the early 1900s from the Banat, Arad region of what is now Romania. They were German Catholics who apparently were resettled/sent there by some German King or Nobelman, as were many other Germans.

The "forced" migations to that area from Germany were an attempt to spread the German popluation throughout Europe. Why the Banat region? The Germans were really good farmers and the Banat area is very fertile.

E-mail me and I can send you the specifics re: a Catholic Church that supposedly has such family records.

Mike Rastatter
(330) 467-5668
e-mail: mjrastatter@aol.com

Hi Jan,

Sorry to take so long to answer. I've been working everyday on genealogy and had to clear up old business before starting anything new. Do you have relatives from Wiesenhaid, Englsbrunn, Schondorf, Kruezstaetten, Traunau, Segentau, Bruckenau,Neu Arad, Neudorf, Neupanat or other towns around Arad, Romania? What surnames are you working on?

Carol
