Hello. Glad the directory has been helpful to you. I didn't see a listing for a Calix Burns but I attached the page with the Burns listing anyway. Good luck with your search.

Nancy,

Hope you are still visit this thread. You may have noted that your thread was instrumental in helping us to find our relatives in Panama. Thank you very much for helping.

Well, now that we have, another family is asking if I can assist them in trying to find out what happened to one of theirs. Calix Burns left Belize around the time of the making of the canal and never returned, or contacted his family in Belize again.

Can you please check to see if you have any listings for Burn(s) in your directory?

Thanks!

Catherine Joudrey
1910 - 2006

Catherine Miller Joudrey was born February 5, 1910 in Crosshill, Scotland to Alexander Miller Kay and Margaret (Caldwell) Kay. She went home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2006 in Burnaby, British Columbia. Catherine’s father came to Canada seeking work during a time of economic depression in Scotland. The family followed him to Fort William in 1924. In her junior year of high school she had to drop out to care for her mother who was seriously ill. Thus, she never had the opportunity to fulfill her girlhood dream of becoming a registered nurse. In 1933 she married Hurley Fummerton and in 1936 they welcomed a daughter, Margaret. Hurley died in 1938 and for several years Cathie worked in Chapples Department Store and was an active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. In 1945 she married Gilbert Joudrey who was born in Nova Scotia but had worked in the import/export business in the Republic of Panama for a number of years. The family lived in Colon, Panama until Mr. Joudrey’s retirement in 1955 when they moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. Cathie was active in the Eastern Star, helping particularly in bake sales and making dressings for cancer patients. It was a proud achievement for her when just a few years ago she received her fifty year pin. Cathie is survived by her daughter, Margaret Smith, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. She also is survived by three grandsons: Bruce Smith (wife April), Douglas Smith (wife Betsy) and Scott Smith (wife Sara), and ten great-grandchildren: Noelle, Andrew, Haley, Zachary, Eloise, Heather, McKenzie, William, Ian, and Walter, all of Colorado. A celebration of Catherine’s life will be held Saturday, October 7 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bert Vancook of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church officiating, followed by a reception at the Valhalla Inn. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

I'm trying to piece together the family tree form my mom side.
Her name is Berta Martinez Ramirez from Almirante.
Her parents were Dulis Martinez Lara (Born in Nicaragua from Telemaco Martinez and Luisa Lara) and Idalia Juliana Ramirez Cubilla (Born in Changuinola from Pedro Ramirez and Concepcion Cubilla Lopez).

Since most of my uncles ignore this side of the story and the rest of the cousins are spread all over in Colon, Chiriqui and Panama, is difficult to track any more info about the grand and great parents, uncles, cousins, etc.

Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hello, my name is Ricardo Ware. My mother's name before marriage was Ruby Estella Brooks. She married a sailor by the name of Albert Ware Jr. I am the only child born Dec 1950. My mother moved with my father to the USA iin 1945. She died June of 1958 in Jacksonville, Florida and I was only 7 years old at that time. My father brought me to the USA and his parents raised me. That was the last contact I had with my mother's family. My mother's name was Olga Brooks and she was married to Cristobal Brooks. I know that most of the family are long gone, but I I hope by luck to find some. If anyone can lead me in the right direction I would be greatly appreciated. my email address is ricardoamware@yahoo.com.

Finding Relatives in Panama

I am searching for relatives of my mother, Ruby Estella Brooks. She was born Apr 17, 1917 in Colon, Panama to Olga Herbert and Cristobal Brooks. She married my father, Albert Ware Jr, Dec 20, 1943. He was a US Navy man in the Canal Zone at that time. My mother came to the US in 1945 but died in 1958. I was 7 years old at that time and never knew of my mother relatives. All I know is that the family lived in Colon and she had brothers name Ricardo and I believe Carlos. I also believe her mother's sister was a well known teacher or professor in Colon or Panama City. Other distant relatives on my grandmother's side had the last names Walcott, Samuels, and Allen. I don't know if they came to Panama from other countries. I would like to visit Panama and meet my relatives. And at 62 years old now this is my gold! If anyone knows the whereabouts of the above or has any information I would love to hear from you. My email address is ricardoware1221@gmail.com and my name is Ricardo Ware. Thanks.

Thank you for your response. It would be helpful to know your grandmothers name and her sisters name. I have a family tree for Arnulfo. I thought I would find my great grandparents somewhere in that tree but have not yet. The only child that I could find listed for Arnulfo was a son, Gerardo Edilberto Arias Grimaldo.

My great grandparents, Juan Francisco Arias and Emelina Arias were cousins, married to one another. They immigrated to the US in 1894 and lived in New Jersey. When they moved to the US they dropped their Spanish hyphenated surnames and it has made my search for the Panama relatives difficult. I have been unable to find out who their parents were.

Any information you may have to share is greatly appreciated. I have all but given up on this quest to put my ancestral tree together.

My grandmother is the daughter of Arnulfo Arias Madrid. Someone posted saying he didn't have children which was incorrect because he had two daughters. My grandmother was sent to live in the countryside at a young age with some distant relatives and her father would come to visit her. She lived with him at some points as she grew older but when she met my grandfather, a gringo, at age 20 he took her back to the US with him.

In regards to finding your great grandparents, I will ask my grandma if she remembers who they could have been. She frequently travels to Panama with her half sister and so if she doesn't know, her cousins might. I hope to be of more help to you!

Sorry!
I missed your reply.

I am aware of a Keene in San Miquel (just up the road from Paraiso), but not in Paraiso.

Do you have any info on the Keene your father went to school with? Or what years that would have been?

I now live in Panama and have met two sons of the Keene (who also migrated, like my Dad, from Jamaica) from San Miguel. As far as we can determine there is no relation, but it is still possible that we are primos (cousins).

Thanks very much!
Bill

Gil's mother was a slave according to the research that I found. I belive she was half indian and perhaps half negro. None the less all reasearch points to the love Manuel Colunge had for his son. When Gil escaped Panama and the US military, he fled to Cuba and stayed with his sister and her family for several months. The Colunge/Colunje are Basque

Dear Rebecca,
Since I posted this information several years ago I have discovered much more accurate information on this family. The originial post was from my grandmother's journal. It was not accurate. If you wish the accurate information I will gladly share this with you. Can you tell me your connection to the Colunge family?
Gil was born out of wedlock. His father Manuel married into an extremely prominent Ecudador/Spanish family -Llonas -with many titles. My greatgrandmother was the product of this marriage and was Gil's half sister. I found a book on Simon Bolivar. A chapter is dedicated to Manuel Colunge. I have also been in contact with Gil Colunge's grandchildren.

I am so sorry I haven't answered this before now! It is one year later, and I didn't know there was a reply.
Thank you so very much for the information on the Colunje/Colunge family. Absolutely fascinating.
Neither my fiance nor I can read Spanish. I think I'll buy the book regardless - what a fabulous piece of family history.
My own research has been more U.S./England, as I've recently joined the Daughters of the American Revolution. It's exciting to find out about the new branch of my family tree in South America!
Again, thank you so very much.
Rebecca

Hi Yes, I do.

Both Serrano & Gonzalez from Chiriqui Panama....Luis Gonzalez was my great great grandfather on my mother's side, she was born in the province of Chiriqui as well, Serrano was on her father's side, but they did not keep Serrano as last name and instead used their mother's last name "Moreno" They are in my family tree which you could view if you like. I live in the U.S but originally from Panama. Luis Gonzalez was my great great grandfather and his daughter Leoncia was his daughter she was my great grandmother...Also my great grandfather Arcadio was son of Serrano, but he did not use "Serrano" out of wedlock and so instead used "Moreno" his mother's name...long story but I am related to Luis Gonzalez being my great great grandfather and related to Serrano, but we lost the last name with my great grandfather who used "Moreno"...so it appears that you and I are distantly related, most likely..Very interesting facts.

So that's the story...email me if you like:
amelia.e.rojas@gmail.com
Kenneth,

I have a hard copy of the Osorio family book by Jewish Historian Dr. Alberto Osorio Osorio (my uncle) which was published in 1991. Have been doing some research there and the dates you mention in regards to your grandfather correspond to the following:

There is a David Osorio borned in Curacao in 1865 and deceased in Panama in 1925. He is my great grand father. His family record show Mrs. Evelyne Alvarez as his wife (1868-1950) borned also in Curacao and deceased in Panama and 3 children in matrimony: Esther, 1893-1953, Dilia 1900-1926, Isaac David 1906-1982 Isaac been my grandfather.
Outside of matrimony he also had 2 additional children in Panama: Ofelia
1903-1989 and Ruben 1905-1989.

Given that his 1st child in Panama was born in 1893, there is a possibility he was father to your father 2 years earlier in Jamaica.. There are documented family ties to Jamaica and St. Thomas and "family visits" between the islands were frequent.

Do you have more information on your father up bringing? Was he raised by his mother? Any other siblings in the household in Jamaica?

If this David Osorio is indeed your grandfather, then you would first cousin to my late father (who died almost 2 years ago at age 72) and his 6 brothers and sisters of whom only 2 remain alive: uncle Rene David age
85 and aunt Edna age 82.

Hope this info helps.

Efrain Alberto Osorio (age 39)
Scottsdale, AZ
Ph. 480-656-0104

Looking for a Fred Hemphill... he was stationed in Panama around 1957.

Most likely in Colon.

I believe he was from California. Not quite sure.

Hi Efrain, My name is Kenneth osorio and am still interested in following up the Osorio Families in Panama. I think my G/Father David Issac Osorio may have connections with Panama.
My father was born in Jamaica in 1891 so I expect that G/Father was in Jamaica about that time. Please contact me so we can discuss the Osorio family. Regards, Ken.
