Rousseau
0 Reviews
C.Z., I. C. C. Press, 1912 - Canal Zone - 58 pages

Author wrote several reports. NO copies found anywhere. Library of Congress????
Like you, I had tons of family and secondary family living and working and dieing there. In later U.S. census, PCZ was included, but not 1910.

"When workers died, and they were not hospitalized... did they just dispose of their bodies and not record the death?"

Donna, I also have family that worked in the Canal Zone. Part of the question is 'when were they there."

When the French started their work constructing what was then the most ambitious construction job of the century, the isthmus was a jungle, the conditions were bare, even primative for everyone.

The French did provide basic living conditions for their employees, as we would expect for the times the provision was based on the level of value of the employee to the over-all project.

David McCullough, in his wonderful historical look at the history of the Panama Canal, 'The Path Between the Seas,' indicated that deaths due to malaria and yellow fever got to such high rates that the medical people could not keep up, that included the mortuary people...some were buried in unmarked graves, some of which were likely mass graves.

Having said that, do not give up in your search, one never knows even when there is evidence to the contraty, the evidence may not apply to this case.

Best wishes in you search. Warm regards, Mike

Hi, I am afraid the links we provided are the only ones available. As we mentioned before, the only source you may want to try is the website for Canal Zone Vital records where you can request copies of birth, marriage, death, etc. This is the link.

http://www.vitalrec.com/cz.html

At the time of the Panama Canal construction, all records were kept by vital statistics office from the Panama Canal Company specifically for the canal workers disregard the nationality. All these records were sent to Washington, D.C.

Regards,

Corozal American Cemetery
corozalcemetery@abmc.gov

Hi, Do you know of any other site or locations to search for people that worked on the Panama Canal.

When workers died, and they were not hospitalized... did they just dispose of their bodies and not record the death?

I cant find anything on two people that I am looking for:

Henry Dodd Graver. b. 1855 in Jamaica. He died in Panama, I don't know when.
Henry Graver b. 1895 died 1904. He was killed in Panama.

Any additional help would be great. You were very helpful in helping me locate Hannah Graver.

George Henry Arnold was born in Coshocton, Ohio 1 Feb 1832. He was married to Harriet Weldy. He passed away 9 Mar 1909 in West Mineral, Cherokee, Kansas. We know he fought in the Civil War and blew up railroads! He also received a letter from Pres. Roosevelt to go to Panama to build steam engines and sawmills for the digging of the Panama Canal. We have no clue who his parents were. His son, my Grandfather, was also named Henry Arnold. Some people have said GHA went by Henry not George.

Hi, I don't recognize your screen name so I am not sure if we have already connected. Are you Alice Hayes son? I am Jeannette's oldest daughter Alice. Everyone calls me Toni. Yes you did visit Jeannette Mappin, Blanche Thomas (twins) and all their kids in Killeen (Ft Hood)Texas. For our grandmothers Alice Taylor Bleakely Singley's' funeral. Grandmother died of heart failure while in Texas. After the funeral her remains were returned to the canal zone in Panama. She is buried in the US Miliary cemetary in Corazel. If you look up the surnames of Bleakley; Singley; Mappin; and Thomas...I have started the family trees and filled them in with the information I have and can remember.

Hi Jenney, my mother was Jeannette Singley(one of the twins)I apparently am the oldest of the grandchildren of Alice Bleakley. My granparents, parents, and their siblings are all deceased. I guess this makes me the matriarch of this branch of the family. There are 11 remaining grandchildren of Alice and Eugene Singley...I think. What would you like to know? I check this site every now and then so hopefully you will get this and vice versa.
