Shearer and Saenz families

I am researching this family, both in the US and in Costa Rica.

Sometime around 1910 James William Shearer (known in Costa Rica as Jaime Guillermo Shearer Douglas) traveled to San Jose Costa Rica, probably as an employee of the United Fruit Company. I believe that he was originally from Beeville, Texas.

James Shearer married a Costa Rican woman, Rosalie/Rosalia Saenz Hernandez. Their son Jaime Guillermo Shearer Saenz was born on 10 April 1913. This son's cedula number was 1-369-359-717. I haven't found any cedula number for either of the parents.

I am seeking information on James (Jaime) Shearer Douglas and his wife Rosalia Saenz Hernandez. A family story states that James died "soon" after his son's birth, but I can find no factual evidence of that.

Circumstantially, by the time the son James returned to the United States in 1941, he was using the name Jose Manuel Saenz Hernandez. A family story suggests that he assumed the name of a dead relative of his mother's. James/Jose Manuel had addresses in Cartago, Costa Rica, and returned to this city to live for a while with his second wife, Floranell Shearer. Their daughter, Ann Rosalie Shearer, was born in Cartago in the mid 1940s.

There is some evidence that Rosalia emigrated to the United States, perhaps living for a time in either (or both) the Tampa, Florida or New Orleans, Louisiana. But I have not been able to confirm that.

Rosalia's son, James/Jose Manuel, died in Cartago in May 2001, years before I started my research on behalf of the sons of his third marriage, who really don't know anything about their father. Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

Penny

Thanks for your reply. Emilia Alvarado Hanke was married to Francisco Alvarado. They definitely lived in Costa Rica in the 1860s and 1870s. They had at least four children which were born in the time mentioned. The children's names were John (Juan), James, Mary and, probably, Federico Alvarado Hanke.

interestend in: Julie Hanke, Emilie Alvarado Hanke and their families;
The German lady Julie Hanke (1813 – 1902) lived in North and Central America between 1847 and 1869: in Texas, later on in Greytown, Nicaragua, and Aspinwall, Panama. My name is Liane von Droste. I am a German author, working on a book about German emigrants leaving for America in the 19th century. I am searching for biographical details about Julie Hanke and her daughter Emilie. I discovered a list of genealogical details about her family which I can send. Hoping to find out more about Julie and her daughter Emilie Alvarado Hanke (Emilia Alvarado Hancke, born 1835, marriage 1860 in Cartago). If you by any chance can hand on any kind of information about Julie and her family, please send me a note! Thanks

His WWI Draft Registration lists 1873. A family photo of his headstone shows 1874.

Family in Switzerland had performed a cursory search through church records in Switzerland, but they found nothing.

I am trying to learn the exact burial location of my uncle, William Kelly Marks, who died in Hospital San Juan de Dios in San José on 11 January 1978. The only record I have is the "Report of the Death of an American Citizen" issued by the American Embassy in San José on 4 May 1978, which, under "Disposition of the remains" states: "Locally buried at Calvo Cemetery, San José."
As I am unable to find any information about a cemetery by this name, I would very much appreciate someone's help in identifying this.
Many thanks.
Carlos Ojeda Espinosa, son of Jesus and Teresa

My great grandfather's name was Carlos Ojeda Espinosa. He was supposedly from Guerrero, Mexico, but married Clemencia Calderon Umana in Costa Rica and lived in Puntarenas. I want to know more about my great grandfather, but since he cut off relations with the rest of the family, no one seems to know much about him or his history. I know his parents names were Jesus Ojeda and Teresa Espinosa. I was also told that he had indigenous blood, and am curious to find out more about this, too. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help. :)

Yes, I have double checked and I am certain that it is Madriz and not Madrid. There are church documents that support the name aside from other record transcriptions avaialble at Family Search. I just now checked the Costa Rica telephone book and while there are a large number with the surname Madriz, there are only about 5-6 Madrid listed. Makes me wonder if it was an error or something and somehow the name was changed to Madrid over the years. I have seen that in other genealogy both in the US and in the research I have done on my husband's Costa Rican family history. One example is the name Bedoya which in some records, including the registrar were recorded as Vedoya. Especially in the times we are talking about, names were written down as they were heard as spelling rules were not firmly in place.

Thank you for the link to your tree at WorldConnect. I have printed out the pertinent pages and will keep it in mind as I continue researching and I should find anything that connects your line with my husband's, I will surely be back in touch.

Are you sure it is Madriz and not Madrid?

The farthest I go up the tree is Juan Francisco Arias and his wife Maria Salazar. Both born in the late 1700s. They moved to Panama (or that part of Costa Rica became Panama, not sure).

I have 4 generations in the US. My Great Grandparents came from Panama ... I know I am connected to the family in Panama below (which included 3 Presidents of Panama) because my grandfather spoke of them (wish I had really listened to his stories).

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

Anyway here is the lineage in Panama if it's any help to you.

1 Juan Francisco ARIAS b: ABT 1789
+ Maria SALAZAR b: ABT 1794
2 José Gabriel ARIAS SALAZAR b: ABT 1815
+ Nicolasa DEL CASTILLO CAMARGO b: ABT 1820
3 Maria Encarnación ARIAS CASTILLO b: BEF 7 JUN 1839 c: 7 JUN 1839
3 Maria del Rosario ARIAS CASTILLO b: BEF 16 DEC 1841 c: 16 DEC 1841
3 Antonio de Jesús ARIAS CASTILLO b: ABT 1850
+ Mar¸a del Carmen MADRID DE LA GUARDIA b: ABT 1855
4 Mar¸a Eudocia ARIAS MADRID b: 1876
4 José Alfredo ARIAS MADRID b: 1877
4 Antonio ARIAS MADRID b: 1880
4 Gerardo ARIAS MADRID b: 1882
4 José Benjam¸n ARIAS MADRID b: 1884
4 Harmodio ARIAS MADRID b: 3 JUL 1886 d: 23 DEC 1962
+ Mar¸a del Rosario GUARDIA VIETO b: 1891 d: 1987
5 Living ARIAS GUARDIA
5 Roberto Emilio ARIAS GUARDIA b: 26 OCT 1918 d: 22 NOV 1989
+ Margot HOOKHAM b: 18 MAY 1919
5 Living ARIAS GUARDIA
+ Gabriel GALINDO VALLARINO b: ABT 1915
6 Living GALINDO VALLARINO
6 Living GALINDO VALLARINO
+ Living ARIAS VALLARINO
6 Living GALINDO VALLARINO
5 Living ARIAS GUARDIA
5 Living ARIAS GUARDIA
4 José Daniel ARIAS MADRID b: 1887
4 Mar¸a Josefa ARIAS MADRID b: 1888
4 Mar¸a del Carmen ARIAS MADRID b: 1889
4 Arnulfo ARIAS MADRID b: 15 AUG 1901 d: 10 AUG 1988
+ Ana Matilde LINARES HERBRUGER b: 18 JAN 1909 d: 26 AUG 1955
5 Gerardo ARIAS LINARES b: 31 MAR 1929 d: 15 AUG 2002
Hi,

I have just begun my research with my husband's family but he is connected to an Arias family from Cartago. Your dates go back farther than I have at this point, but my guess, being that population and communities were much smaller in those times, is that there is most likely a collateral connection between my husband's family and yours.

I have an Emilio Arias who married a Juana Madriz, dates unknown, and their son Liborio Arias Madriz who was born about 1893 in Cartago.

My parents were born and raised in San Jose, Costa Rica and moved to the US in the 80's. Is there anyone who knows of the Calvo or Andre Families?

Other names in my family's history include Cecilia Gonzales (grandmother), Mariano Enrique Calvo, Olga Martha Gutierrez, Maria Luisa Sibaja, Ana Teresa Odio, and Johanes Lakman.

Please let me know if anyone is able to find anything about any of these names with regard to Costa Rica, or Germany.

I have a Grandfather who moved from Hamburg Germany to San Jose Costa Rica. His name was Hans Andre and he changed it to Juan Andre when he moved. Is there any way that I can look up records about him?
