Haylocks - any information on those who went to British Honduras (Belize)

Hi

If there is anyone who can help me with my ancestry question or guide me to a source, it would be greatly appreciated.

It is a known fact that the Haylocks from some parts of England, settled in British Honduras (now called Belize) in the 17th Century. If they were Buccaneers or Pirates, that would explain why they were hiding out in Central America back in tha day. I am sure they were not in the British Navy, but then again, I could be wrong.

Where would I go to find out where the original settlers from Belize originated? The hurricanes were not kind to family records.

Kind Regards

Steve Haylock, great, great grand son of Alfred Haylock of Belize

AUGUST & MASKALL FAMILIES

JOHN SAMUEL AUGUST arrived in Belize sometime before 1798. He was a Mahogany Cutter and Merchant. He held positions of Magistrate for the Colony as well as Colonel in the Militia. He married a SARAH BYRON (nee MASKALL) sometime between 1819 and 1822. His brother-in-law WILLIAM MASKALL held similar positions. I believe the following may of been JOHN SAMUEL AUGUST's sisters. MARY MCKAY, SARAH CATHERINE MURRAY, REBECCA MASKALL (previously GRAY), ELIZABETH PETZOLD and SUSSANNAH USHER. He left Belize in 1838 and returned to England where he died the following year. Any information relating to these families would be very much appreciated.

BASTING Family

I'm trying to determine whether Peter BASTING died in Belize. It would have been in 1844 or within several years afterwards, most likely. He was Catholic. He died from falling off a roof while making repairs - possibly even to the roof of the church. He was a carpenter. He had a wife, Katharine, and two daughters, Anna Dorothy and Therese (unsure of spelling of first names). The family left the Duchy of Nassau (later Germany) in 1843 and came to Belize via St. Thomas Island, near where they had been shipwrecked. Therese BASTING was born on St. Thomas or nearby in 1844. The family went on to New Orleans (with Peter?). Any information or leads about this family are most welcome. Thank you.

McCulloch Family in Belize

I am interested in any, and all information related to the McCulloch family in Belize, and in any information that may link the family back to Scotland. Our family's verbal history has always stated that there were three brothers who traveled to this side of the world together. One might have stayed in America, and two moved on to Belize. That is still unclear in my mind, because I have also heard the version which said all three came here. Names associated with my early ancestors are: Joseph, Henry and William. Time of migration would appear to be sometime between the end of the 1600's and 1700's.

If you know anything about either our past, or are a link of the present extended family, please let me know.

In search of family of Conchita Barbara Zayden

Conchita is my mother. She came to this country when she was 16 or 17. She left her whole family behind, and has not had contact with anyone since 1958, before I was born. My sister and nephews have all tried to coax her into revealing her family info with us but she refuses. I'm certain she had a very unhappy life and that's why she came to America. But, I still want very much to learn of her family and anything else I can learn. She was born in Belize City, Belize, May 19, 1935. I am uncertain whether her last name is from her mother or father as they were not married. Thank you for this site!

I am searching for any family members of my mother Conchita Zayden. She was born May 19, 1935 in Belize City to Carlos Zayden and Paula Coy(e). My mother left Belize around 1952 when she was 17 or so. As far as we know my mother has had no contact with anyone from her family since then. Carlos Zayden owned a tavern there. And I know my mother has half sisters by her father Carlos.. Any thing will help. Thank you!

- Cindy

I have found a newspaper article in my grandather's papers which mentions a "Septimus Ritchie, son of Southfield, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. His brother was Wilfred. The two had settled in 'Stann Creek' prior to 1935. (I assume that is in British Honduras,) He went to work for the Bowman plantations according to the article, and eventually (1945) bought 350 acres of land which on which he raised cattle and crops. He was the son of Lillie (daughter of Annie Bent and Charles Isaacs of Southfield, Jamaica, and she was born prior to 1900) Do either of these Ritchie brothers fit into your family tree? I am still looking into information about their grandparents, Isaacs and Bent from St. Elizabeth's , Jamaica and before that England.

BENNETT

Marshal Bennett Jr. and Catherine Meighan were parents of Marcus Charles Bennett, baptised in Belize in 1820, and I think also a daughter Catherine Bennett. There were several Bennetts in Belize by this time: Marshal Bennett Sr., the VIP who died in 1839; his brother William who died in London in 1804; his brother Charles, who died in Surrey many years later. I suspect that his brother John and wife Sarah Warburton were the parents of my Marshal Jr., as Warburton has come down as a middle name on several lines of the family, but can't prove it. John and Sarah married in 1796 at Sheffield, where the Bennetts were merchants - baptisms of all the children of Thomas Bennett and wife Elizabeth are in church records there - and John and Sarah had children baptised at Sheffield, but no baptism of Marshal Jr. is recorded. The will of Marshal Sr. does not mention children of Jr., who died in 1835, predeceasing Sr. The will of Charles does not mention children of Jr. I cannot locate the wills of William and John. Can anybody help?

I abstracted all the Bennetts from early censuses and slave records, and will be glad to look up any of this surname you know were in Belize at that time.

He was in Belize Central America in 1941, that is where my father Primitivo Carbajal was born. On my father's birth record it has his name listed as Winston Paget. I am told he could have possible been a British soldier, because at that Belize was still a British colony under the name British Honduras. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
History of Belizian/BC newspapers

Hopefully someone can solve this puzzle for me. I was told very adamently by a Belizian/American friend that in the 1920's even in Belize City, there were NO newspapers, only had town criers.

As a researcher of Brooklyn, NY Irish-born ancestors, I subscribe to the Brooklyn newspapers from the 1800's (and they are quite prolific), I find it incomprehensible that a British (colony?), would not have newspapers in the early 20th century.

If more appropriate, please feel free to respond privately to my email. Thank you for any help.
Maureen

I am looking for David Williams; he would be in his late 50's. Came to the U.S. in the late 1960's around 1968 or 1969. He came to Georgia with a missionary from the Church of God, an elderly woman, and visited my church in Lithia Springs, Georgia. At this time he was approximately 24 or so.I have only seen one David Williams listed in the Belize phone book and he was in San Ignacio. He is not a relative, just a friend. I am now in Belize and would like to find him.

My parts of me - Betancourt, Bosfield, Moore, Phillips, Reyes, ....

My great-grandfather, Felix Betancourt Jr., the son of Felix Sr. and Ella Pinelo in 1878, died in Honduras in 1918 of a chop wound to the head (quite a story that can't be told now). He had married Rosenda Del Arca, and they lived in Punta Gorda, Belize.

Felix Jr. and Rosenda Del Arca had a son named Benigno Joseph Betancourt (my granddad)

My 2nd great-grandfather, Francisco Reyes Sr., who came from Mexico, was married to Margarita Moore. Francisco Jr. married Mildred Bosfield, and had two children - Thelma and Egbert.

My 2nd great-grandfather, John Bosfield, who died in 1941, was married to Sara Phillips. They had three daughters - Mildred (my great-grandmother), Maud, and Gladys.

Are any of these persons in your family tree? Do you have any little bells chiming on hearing these names? Have you come across oficial records bearing details of any of these persons? Please contact me if you can answer yes to any of those questions.

Lopez Surname in Honduras/Belize

Still actively searching for information on the Lopez family name in Belize or Honduras. My paternal grandfather, Herbert Allan Lopez, was said to have been born thereabouts. We figure about 1898 (he was 35 when dad was born in 1933). Any information anyone has would be helpful, as we are at a brick wall at this point. Thanks to anyone who may be able to help. Cheryl (Lopez) Fortunato, SI, NY, USA
