http://www.barbadosadvocate.com/newsitem.asp?more=local&..."The search turned up information about a slave called “Quaw”, who came to Barbados as a young boy from Guinea, but who, when granted his freedom, sought a better life by joining the St. Stephen’s Anglican Church where he would later be appointed the first black sexton in 1838. Quaw, who was emancipated by age 37, would also take another name, William, and a surname, Jemmott, which he could not do as a slave. He would also later take a bride. Quaw died at age 50."
