My dad, John R. Wargi, was in touch with Marek several years ago, but they lost contact with one another. My dad is the great-grandson of John (Jan) Vargovcak. My dad has spent years researching the family name.

John (Jan) Vargovcak did not immigrate to Canada, he immigrated to the United States. He actually changed his surname to Wargi when he became naturalized in the United States. Several years ago we went to Ellis Island and located the name and picture of the ship that Jan Vargovcak traveled to the United States on and we also saw the ship's manifest to confirm this.

John Vargovcak ended up settling down in North Idaho (Coeur d'Alene). He was married to Mary Eachon. They had several children, but to connect the relation to me, they had a son John Wargi, and John Wargi had a son named Richard Wargi. Richard Wargi had a son, my dad, and named him John Wargi.

Marek Vargovcak looks exactly like my father when he was your age. I am looking for relatives. The family name is Vargovcak (the name was changed by the Americans to Vargofcak). My grandfather Michal Vargovcak emigrated from Kosice to Michigan. (His brother was John and, I believe he imigrated to Canada.) His parents Michala Vargovcak Mariae Kleszuisky Vargovcak stayed behind in Slovakia. Please assist me in my search.

My paternal grandpap is Parry Mormack, one of the children of John and Anna Mormack. My grandpap thinks I'm named for his mother, but that's only a coincidence. I don't know much about his siblings, but I remember his sister Marie died in August I believe of 1999 of leukemia, and I think he might also have had a brother George. He married Bertha Wetmore in 1953; her mother was a Welleck, the side of the family I get my looks from. I think the only Welleck I knew besides my great-grandmother, who died in the early Eighties, was my great-great-uncle George, whom I met a few times before he died in about 1991 or so. My grandparents have two children, my father Paul and my aunt Marianna. My father was born in 1954 and my aunt was born about two years later; she's single, no children, never married. My father married Jan Geyer in 1977; her father's side of the family is German descended and from Glenshaw, PA, and her mother's side of the family is mixed; my maternal grandmother's father was an Italian, LaTempa (an unusual name for an Italian, and one that probably is shared only by people from the same town he came from, where I have distant cousins), and his mother was British and his father was Dutch. Then there are myself, born 1979, and my brother Perry, born in 1986. I am unmarried and don't have any children yet.

So was his step father named Paul?

Until 1918, LACKOVCE was known by its Magyar (Hungarian) name of LACFALVA.

So here are two related records:
3. Maria Behum Lackovce, Cz. Slov. 1921 23 97%
4. Maria Behum Laczfalva 1892 20 97%
So in EIDB also you will find
9. Mihaly Behun Laczfalva arrived 1906 age 16
ss Slavonia, from port of Fiume, date of arrival October 10, 1906

Could this be him?
Alas, EIDB does not have the original manifest linked properly. So, go to http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ and use the missing manifest feature, and use the data I have shown above to search for it. You will have to page through the manifests, but that's how we did it in the "olden days" (before April 1, 2001 when EIDB came online...)

Good Luck!

Bill

I believe the village you are looking for is PETRIKOVCE, SLOVAKIA about 15 km due south of Michalovce. A great mapping tool to see this village in fairly accurate setting is mapy.atlas.sk

PETRIKOVCE church records have been filmed and logged by the Mormon's Family Center. You can view them for the cost of film rental (about $3.50) at any Family History Center affiliated/attached to most every Mormon Church, so there is probably one near you. Go here http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a... , use PLACE SEARCH button, enter PETRIKOVCE in the place field and you are off and running.

Now, you must be fairly certain of the village name. How did you come upon it? How did you determine the spelling? This is important since there is another town located also in the region called PETKOVCE.

You will also find many BABINC'A'K, BABINC'A'KOVA' in the phone book, (which is masculine/feminine, with the correct pronunciation.) None live in PETRIKOVCE but that is no suprise. In some area, more than half the residents of small villages have moved to the cities for employment within the last 20 years.

Go here http://www.centroconsult.sk/Support/phone.html#codes for how to instructions. I used MICHALOVCE code of 056 and entered only BABI for the surname to find them.

Finally, why did you post Lackovce in your title?

Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

Hi Pete-

I saw your letter about your trip to Slovakia on the Carpathian website. I'm looking for information about my great grand father, John Semanchik, who emigrated to New Jersey abt 1896 and was born around 1863. Family discussion pointed at his being born in a town called "Labovda" which does not seem to exist. I wondered if maybe it was actually "Lavoca" and if my ancestor is John son of Stephanus Szemancsik and Dorothea Jun. Do you know if their son John immigrated to New Jersey instead of PA? I might be grasping at straws but I thought I would just try... Thanks!

Thank you for your response . My husband a I was in Slovakia in Sept and met some of the Urbasik's in there area . We are trying to make a connection of these trees. I have done some research and have found some info but need to find more to make this connection we know someday we will. We visited a few of the towns and their hospitality. Was great they made us feel like we belong there and apart of the family even with out the connection. We feel it would probably be in the 1700 to make this connection. And I am still looking. I thought posting something on message board I may get some one connected to this family that we haven't found yet I thank you again Janet Urbasik
I find a baptism for Anna Harcsarik at the site in 1873 that matches what I know of her possible parents Janos and Maria. But there are some notes on the site on the original entry that I do not understand. Can you offer any insight?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12397-125356-26...

or name: Anna Harcsarik
event: Baptism
date: 1873
place: Nižná Šebastová, Prešov, Slovakia
gender: Female
father: János Harcsarik
mother: Mária
page number: 153
entry number: 81
film number: 1792928
digital folder number: 004407141
image number: 00258
