Lazorcak/Marcincin

Hello, everyone!

I have recently gotten into genealogy again so I'm on a quest to figure out the lines I never had much luck with. I realized I'd never posted anything on this line to Ancestry.com, but to another genealogy website about 10 years ago. So I will try again!

I am looking for information on my ancestors from the Slovak Republic/Austria-Hungary. My great-great grandfather's name was Johan Ignatius Lazorcak. He was born January 13, 1871 in a village near Prešov according to family tradition. He immigrated to Pittsburgh, PA, around the year 1900.

His wife was Maria Marcincin, born September 17, 1874 or 1873. According to her immigration record, she arrived February 23, 1908 through Ellis Island. Her immigration record says she was from Alsosebes. The family oral tradition says that Johan came first and would make visits back to his family as well as send them money. Then at some point, a girl in the village accidentally set a fire and a lot of the village burned. After that, the whole family immigrated to Pittsburgh. On her death certificate, it lists a Joseph Marcincin as her father, but no mother is listed. One of her daughters' death certificates states that her mother was born in Chezekov, Czechoslovakia.

The last time I posted, I received responses that said they might possibly be Rusyn. Apparently when they initially came to America, they went to the Byzantine church on the South Side (St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church). Then at some point, they switched to the Latin Rite, but Johan went back to the Byzantine church before he died.

He and his wife are both buried at St. John the Baptist's cemetery in Castle Shannon. The cemetery is Byzantine Catholic. Andy Warhol is also buried there just down the hill from my great-great grandparents. I have heard many of the people buried there are Rusyn immigrants.

My family always just assumed they were Slovakian. I am descended from Johan and Maria's oldest daughter named Maria or Mary. When my grandfather or his siblings would ask her about their heritage or where they came from, she would always tell them, "You're American now, you don't need to worry about any of that." She apparently didn't want to talk about it much at all. My great-grandmother was about 8 years old when she arrived in America.

I think I have typed everything I know about them. I have records saved if that would help. If I could pinpoint the village maybe I could research further. There is also the language barrier I've found difficult. I'd also really like to know for sure if they were Rusyn or Slovak.

Thanks for any help! Sorry this is so long. I appreciate any information I can get and would love to find some distant cousins from this line.

Hi. Sorry it takes me awhile to reply, I have a sick child I am home with. This post is my correct Makelys. I have also attached a image of another draft notice, only with a different birth date, I don't know why it is different. I do know on John Makelys gravestone it lists his birth year as 1888 (-1954). I have found 1920 - 1940 census but nothing prior. From stories I have heard from family, he met and married Anna somewhere around Pittsburg PA, have not confirmed that yet.

As for Anna chismar, all I know is her gravestone says birth 1886 (-1965) and she had two brothers, john and George. That is all I know about her.

I have found other Makelys, but none seem to be from my direct line so that's why I am trying to do the research in my own. I just can't seem to find a 1910 census or naturalization record. I don't know where they lived prior to 1920 so I can't pinpoint a church they went to. I've found their graves but no information that I don't already know.

I need help and was wondering if anyone could help me or lead me in the right direction....

I am looking to research the Makely family. Here's what I know, john Makely born possibly in Hazen, Czechoslovakia, with two dates of either April 1887 or February 22, 1888. Married Anna Cismar (not sure of the spelling) born 1886 from Czechoslovakia. They said in 1920's census they were from Austria then 1930's from Czechoslovakia. I have found a 1920's census and 1930's census and the registration for military draft but that is all I can find. I cannot find a marriage certificate, naturalazation, immigration to America....nothing else. Can someone please help me or lead me in a direction I can go...
Thanks!

P.s. I guess I also am a little confused as to where I should be looking, Hazin was in Hungary? I was always told we were Slovak and I'm pretty sure my great grand parents spoke Slovak. As of now, this whole area is really confusing me. First it's one country then another... I know my questions might seem stupid, I apologize.

I know he didn't arrive in Ellis Island, but rather arrived in Boston, Mass. All of the manifest/naturalization info is the right George Kobrick. I think I need to research his grand father, Palivoda. However, all of the Mike Palivoda's I've found would have been way to young to be him. I'm assuming Mike Palivoda would have been his maternal grandfather, which doesn't answer any of the questions I have about his parents. His surname in Slovakia would have been either Kobik,Kobrik or Kabrik.

Ilona Sirko & Janos Kobik being his parents were just an assumption I had made in my researxh. George Kobrick (b.April 23, 1897) arrived in Boston, Mass. on Feb. 24, 1921. He arrived on the Zeeland ship, which departed from Belgium. The manifest has him listed as "Jiri Kabrik" & his mother as "Ilja Kobrik". I didn't realize the manifest had a page 2 and missed some important info. His grandfather, Miko or Mike Palivoda had paid for his ticket, and per the manifest, Jiri was headed to his grandfather's residence at: 3916 Fustin St., Cleveland, OH (address on his marriage certificate. Per the manifest, Jiri was living in Babuy Vys. & was born in Cabina Vys. His laborer papers state his name as Jiri Kabrik, and his naturalization papers in 1928 state his name as George Kobrick (americanized name). The 1928 naturalization papers state he was born in Visne, CzechoSlovak. I'm not sure why his name was Jiri and not Juraj if he was Slovak. His manifest info has him as Slovakian. I know all of the villages have changed names since the Austro Hungary empire, but I can't find any of those locations. Not only that, but I have no idea now who his parents are. I was able to track a lot of this info down from what my dad has told me (who passed away in 2001 when I was 20).

You're welcome.
Why is your ancestor's first name Jiri, which is Czech and not Juraj on the arrival manifest and his passport?
Do you have his arrival manifest?
It does look like a Janos KOBIK did travel twice to America. Did you look on the manifest to confirm it is one and the same? www.ellisislandrecords.org
Why you suspect that Janos returned back to Slovakia?
Thanks!! I was able to find baptism information for Ilona Sirko. It looks like she was born in Vechec, Vranov Nad Toplou; parents Janos Sirko & Anna Hritz. I can't find information on Jiri Kobik in Slovakia or when Ilona died in Slovakia. It looks as if her husband, Janos Kobik traveled to America twice, in 1902 & 1909...am I correct? Also, I can't find anything indicating he ever returned to Slovakia after the 1909.

My great-grandfather, Jiri Kobik (later changed to George Kobrick), arrived in America in 1921, from Czechoslovakia.I believe he was from the Vranov nad Toplou district of the Presov region. He settled in Cleveland, Ohio, and married Mary Ferko in 1923. Their marriage certificate states his mother as Helen Kobrick and his father as "Unknown". From what I've found, his mother was Ilona Sirko (he also had her listed as "Ilja" on his ship manifest) and father was Janos Kobik. I would like any information on my great-grandfather and his family in Slovakia. Event though he raised his family in Cleveland as Catholic, my father thought my great-grandfather was raised Orthodox, which leads me to believe he may have been Rusyn. Also, prior to arriving in America, he was captured by Russians in WW1, and was put in a Gulag, released when the war ended. Any information is appreciated.

My grandfather, born in 1902 and died in 2002 (yes that's right) shared everything he could remember about any family member that came to America, not always to stay. Janos, his father, came at least a dozen times only to earn money to buy more land in Horna.

Last entry #14. I believe the names in this 1869 marriage entry are Michael Doric and Anna Danko, married November 23, 1869. He is Roman Catholic, 26 yrs old and living at #48 Hornya. She is Greek Catholic, 19 yrs old and living at #6 Hornya. Do I have this correct? I can't translate all the info on this entry. Also what is that spelling for Michael?
These Greek Catholic entries are so difficult to translate. Thank you so much.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-13034-115527-25...

If the name had been written according to Magyar/Hungarian spelling rules (as would have been required by some officials around 1900), its form would be Kabanya. In Slovak, the same pronunciation is evoked by the spellings Kabania and Kabanja or (more likely recently) KABAŇA. A kaban'a was a kind of short coat worn by men.

Do you have any information regarding their village(s) of origin?

Most people arriving at Ellis Island surnamed Kaban'a (pronounced "KAH-bah-nyah") were from the large village/small town of Jablonica (pronounced "YAH-blo-nyeet-sah"; "jablon'" = apple tree) in western Slovakia.

Jablonica (in former Nitra County) Old names for the place:
1773 Jabloncza, Jablonitz, Jablonicza, 1786 Jabloncza, Jablonicz, 1808 Jabloncza, Jablonitz, Jablonica, 1863–1873 Jablonca, 1877–1907 Jablonic, 1913 Jablánc, 1920– Jablonica
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

V obci JABLONICA (okr.
This is exciting news. My search could not be more difficult since the only surname I know is Weiss (or Weisz or Veis) and Ungvar sits on the most difficult border of this benighted region. We do not know whether the family had a house in the city, or was just from a village near enough to tell the transit authorities they were from Ungvar. There is a family anecdote about a family gristmill and ice-skating on the river nearby, so it is likely that our Veis GGgrandparents were villagers, but we are not sure. I also don't know whether to look west of town, now in Slovakia, or east of town in the Ukraine. One ship's manifest lists "Siroke" as place of origin. This may be on the Laborec River, (now submerged?).
Is it possible to hire someone there who reads Yiddish to research the records for my family? My father is beginning to develop alzheimers and I would love to be able to give him some of his history while he's still with us. His Greatgrandfather's first name was listed as Herman, wife Sarah on a New York City marriage license in 1905. I don't know if his Yiddish first name was Chaim or something else. The oldest son, who left for New York in 1893 was Ignatz, the second son was Samuel.
