Nikoley Family - Stettin, GER (now POL)>Tellingstedt, Schleiswig-Holstein, GER>USA

Reno Evening Gazette (Reno, Nevada, USA)
Tuesday, July 1, 1952

Text beneath photo: READY TO BUILD A NEW LIFE for themselves are the members of the Nikoley family, who arrived in Reno on June 17 from Germany under the sponsorship of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Paterson. The Nikoley family was admitted as displaced persons and will make their home with the Patersons until Mr. Nikoley can find work and provide a home of their own. In the front row are Ingo, 9 years old, and Wolfgang, 11; seated left to right, are Brigette, 15, and on his mother's lap is Uwe, four years old; next is Ernst Nikoley, father of the family, and then Manfred, 17, who acts as interpreter for his parents and the other children; standing, left to right, are Lother, 14; Mrs. Chester Paterson, Mr. Paterson, and Mrs. Alvina Stumpf, mother of Mrs. Paterson, and Hans Nikoley, 13. Before the war in Europe, the family lived at Stettin, near the Russian border, and later was at Tellingstedt in Schleiswig-Holstein before coming to the United States.

Story of Nikoley Family Has Drama, Human Appeal
BY RAY MERGEN

Story of the Nikoley family - father, mother, and their six sons and one daughter - is in many ways a twentieth century version of the "Swiss Family Robinson", lacking not one bit of the drama and human appeal that makes the famous old story still fascinating to children and grownups alike.

Shipwrecked by the tide of war which swept across Germany, often homeless and in distress, the family somehow managed to stay together through misfortunes which lasted more than a decade and landed in the United States this month, hoping to find a haven in which to build a new and useful life for parents and children.

On June 17, they arrived in Reno, where they are now being sheltered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Paterson, while the father, Ernst Nikoley, begins the labor of finding a job and providing a home for his family in a strange land, where he cannot even speak the language of the people from whom he must ask help.

Oldest of the seven children is Manfred, 17 years of age, who acts as interpreter for the whole family with the English he learned during his war-interrupted school years. He was born while the family still lived in Stettin, largest city on the Baltic Sea, near the Russian border, where Ernst Nikoley was employed in the calculation department of a machine factory.

Then came the war and, in 1939, Ernst Nikoley was called to serve in the German army in his home area, where he was on duty until the surrender in 1945. With the Russian advance across Poland and East Germany, civilians were flown out of the Stettin area and Mrs. Nikoley and her children, now six in number, were sent to Tellingstedt in Schleiswig-Holstein. There, Mr. Nikoley joined them at the close of the way and there they remained until they were admitted to the United States under the Kilgore Bill as displaced persons. The seventh child, Uwe, now four years old, was born in Tellingstedt.

Those were hard years in Tellingstedt. Work was scarce and in the general chaos that follows modern warfare and the invasion of a country by foreign armies, there was often little enough to eat and no money for luxuries. A barn was their shelter for a time and the entire family lived in three tiny rooms with only the barest necessities.

Through a family friendship dating back to the girlhood years of Mrs. Alvina Stumpf, mother of Mrs. Paterson, Ernst Nikoley knew the name of one person in the United States to whom he could turn for help - Mrs. Stumpf's uncle, who lived in Minnesota and who died before the letter appealing for his aid ever arrived in this country. In an almost incredible chain of circumstance and delay, Mrs. Stumpf eventually received the letter and the Paterson family at once began to send food and clothing to the Nikoley family in Germany, which helped immeasurably to make their life easier in recent years.

In 1950, Mrs. Paterson's son, Robert, joined a student tour at the University of Nevada bound for Europe and when the student group arrived in Tellingstedt, Mr. Nikoley arranged living quarters for them and helped them in their tour of the region. During this visit, Robert was impressed with the courage and spirit of the Nikoley family and in the appealing qualities of the children who, amid the poverty and devastation about them, had managed to retain a dauntless air of independence.

Finally, on June 3, the family left Bremerhaven for the United States. Like the Swiss Family Robison before them, they were able to salvage practically nothing from the life they left behind. Only the least of their personal belongings - a watch, a bit of jewelry cherished through the hard times, and the pitifully small store of clothing - came with them out of the old world.

The United States they saw first from a transcontinental bus. It seemed so vast, Ernst Nikoley gestured with his hands, "gross, gross", in trying to express his feelings at the first glimpse of his new home. Here, he likes the activity, the bustle of people moving about their daily work. It is easy to see that he is a man who has no patience with idleness, nor with the begging for an easy way out. Mrs. Nikoley is gentle, with a quick twinkle of humor in her eyes. "It is the people", she adds through her oldest son's interpretation. "The people have been good to us". There is a look of gratitude on her face that has washed away all of the anxiety and fear she must have felt many times in the old world for the future of her children.

The youngsters are sturdy, but their faces area a shade too peaked, the circles a bit too deep under their blue eyes. But, it is obvious that the sunshine and plenty of milk will turn them into typically brown and wiry Americans before too long. With the natural ease of well-reared children, they accept their new surroundings happily and serenely, secure in the strength that comes from the love in a close-knit, affectionate family.

Manfred will enter Reno High School this fall as a junior student. During the war years, he was forced to miss one term of school, but he is quick and eager to learn. His ambition is to become a newspaperman, he says. The only girl in a family of six brothers, Brigette, at 15, is quiet and delightfully shy, but there is no lack of poise and it is evident that coping with six brothers has given her a touch of firmness. She likes music and singing. Lother is 14 and he, too, has an ear for music. The piano at the Paterson home attracts him more often than any of the others. Hans, at 13, is showing an interest in building, working with his hands, in putting things together. Wolfgang, 11, and Ingo, 9, are typical small boys. ON the afternoon the photographer came to take their picture, they were engrossed in peddling up and down the sidewalk on a large and battered tricycle, squabbling amiably over whose turn was next, with little Uwe, the four-year-old, the baby of the family, trailing along in the fashion of baby brothers since time began.

Mr. Nikoley and Manfred have been offered work with a local firm, which they eagerly accepted, but Mr. Nikoley hopes to find employment later in the field for which he has been trained. The younger boys are looking forward to the day when they will know sufficient English to get jobs as route boys for the newspapers and to run errands for money. Coping with the language barrier is their first problem. Happily enough, they found in Reno a fellow countryman, Hans Mumm, whose home in Germany was only a few miles from that of the Nikoley family years ago, and they have spent several happy hours recalling friends and events known to each of them.

Also since the arrival of the Nikoley family, Mrs. Paterson invited members of the student tour who knew them in Tellingstedt to the home to renew their friendships. Members of the Daughter of the American Colonist, of which Mrs. Paterson is president, are assisting with the rehabilitation of the family and many friends and neighbors of the Patersons have added their bit to make the Nikoley family fell at home in their new world.
=============
The Nikoley family that went to America from Germany in 1952 is as follows:

Ernst August Nikoley, born 20 May 1913 GER, died 15 Jan 1999 (probably in Reno, NV, USA). He married Selma Ella Unknown 1934 in GER. She was born 12 Oct 1914 GER and died 02 Dec 2001 (probably in CA or NV, USA). Their children were:

1. Knott. One known child: George L. Knott, Jr.

3. Lothar Ernst Nikoley, born c. 1938 Stettin, GER; married Bonny LaRue Goodsell Sep 1959 Reno, NV, USA.

4. Hans Alexander Nikoley, born c. 1939 Stettin, GER; married Mary Helen Frohlich 25 Jun 1961 Reno, NV, USA. Two known children, names unknown.

5. Wolfgang E. Nikoley, born c. 1941 Stettin, GER; married Rebecca D. Boyer Jul 1977 Reno, NV, USA.

6. Ingo G. Nikoley, born c. 1943 Stettin, GER; married (1) Constance Leary, married (2) Cathy Ann Adlish.

7. Infant Nikoley (sex unknown), born and died c. 1945 GER.

8. Uwe K. Nikoley, born c. 1948 Tellingstedt, Schleiswig-Holstein, GER; married Janice J. Sahakian 31 Jul 1971; divorced 01 Feb 1977.

The family departed Germany from Bremerhaven and arrived in New York, NY, USA on 11 Jun 1952. From NY, the family migrated to Reno, NV, USA in Jun 1952.
We believe he was employed as a forester by the von Borcke family who owned an estate in that village. Any tips on visiting, any other info would be appreciate.

Looking for information on my great-great grandma Louise Bertha Marie Wangerin's family. She was born 4 Oct 1877 in (then) Pielburg, Pommerania, Prussia, (now) Parsecko, Szczecinek, Poland. Her parents were Eduard A. Wangerin b. 25 Nov 1835 Prussia, m. Johanne Caroline Wilhelmine Raske b. 16 Sep 1841 Prussia. 7 siblings were also born there between 1859 and 1880:

Albert Eduard Anton, Auguste Albertine Wilhelmine, Wilhelmine Henriette Ernestine, Wilhelm Eduard Gustav, Bertha Emilie, Gustav August, & Anna Bertha. I've found all but one of their baptisms on the LDS' IGI in Pielburg. Cannot find the parents or farther.

They emmigrated in 1883 on the "Werra" from Bremen and Southampton to NY and settled in Effington Twp., Otter Tail, MN. There is a Franz Wangerin b. Prussia, m. Minnie Marquat with two sons Gustav and Richard who also settled there that I believe is a brother or cousin to Eduard.

Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

My great great grandfather August William Splinter was born in Zarzig in 1850. It is a town near Stargard. Family history has it that in 1885 he and his family fled to America (Wisconsin) because his almost 8 year old son was going to be drafted into the army. I am hoping to find anyone who has info on the family or the history of the time. August's wife was Marie (Maria, Mary) Hoefs, and when they came to Wisconsin they had two children: Max Paul and Helena. August's naturalization papers have immigration info listed, but I can't find them on the passenger lists. Thanks in advance for any info.

Sheila

I am trying to find records (church records, census, etc.) from that time. Does anyone know how I get these? I need to get them on the internet if at all possible. I am traveling there in a few weeks and want to know as much as I can before I go.
Thanks!

Found some info on my Charles Mulling who shows up in New Orleans around 1870/80. Got parent's names as Ludwig Mulling (with an umlaut over the U) and Wilhelmine Grosch. I think his name was changed to Mulling from something German that sounds like Mulling (lots of choices).
Original info is.....
My Great grandfather, Charles Joseph Mulling was a banana boat ship captain stationed in New Orleans. He is said to have come from Swinemunde, Germany (Swinoujscie) which is on the border with Poland around 1878. He was just 14yrs. at the time. He dies in Belize on New Years day 1913 and is later moved to St. Vincent De Paul cemetary no. 1 on Louisa St. Has anyone ever heard of this or any Mulling family from this area?

Thanks,
Karen Lyon
karenlyon@ntown.com

Szczecin, Poland (once Stettin, Germany) where my ancestors, Wildes, lived

This is to request any information on Ulricka Fredricka Charlotta Wilde who emigrated to US in 1854 with her 14-year-old (approx.) brother, August. They were from Stettin, Pommerania in Prussia, Germany, now Szczecin, Poland. Ulricka Wilde was born July 4, 1836 in "Coplin by Giltso", Germany. I feel almost certain this was actually "Koblen", showing on an older map of Pommerania-Prussia as just northwest of Stettin, now Szczecin. Does anyone know the name of the river or rivulet that runs/ran by Koblen, Prussia--and what Koblen was renamed if it became part of Poland? Ulricka's father's name was Karl/Carl. She named one son Peter Theodor August and others John Edward; Charles Henry; William Lewis Henry, Harry Samuel Joseph, Elizabeth Francis, Agnes Drussilla Henryetta, Bertram Lachial, etc. I have heard her family had a dairy farm--would "Koblen" have been an area of dairy farmers or at any rate, farms? Are any of the Wildes still in Stettin/Szczecin and "Koblen" and/or Szczecin? Thank you. (In US, Ulricka, who was 18 when she emigrated, married John Henry Hayes. They lived for decades in Kirkwood, MO--the German area of St. Louis, MO.

Seeking info on SCHALLOCK and GENTZ families from near Stettin. In particular, Frederick Schallock and Friederika Gentz. Friederika supposedly worked for a 'land baron' named Wolff and had an illegitimate son, Albert, by the land baron's son. Albert was my grandfather. Friederika married Frederick in Pommern. Have reference for another birth of son in Stettin. This family, in addition to, Ferdinand Schallock and wife, Bertha Fiebelkorn, and Wilhelmina Schallock and husband, Frederick Kloehn, and parents Johann and Johanna Schallock emigrated between 1874-77 and ultimately settled in McMillan, WI. Any information greatly appreciated. My father is 90 and the last surviving child of Albert. He is curious.

SCHIRMER's from Stara Rudnica

I am researching the Friedrich SCHIRMER 1836-1901 and Juliana Jahnka (Yanka) 1838-1923 family. Friedrich SCHIRMER was born in Niederwutzen, Konigsberg, Neumark, Germany which is now known as Osinow Dolny, Szczenin, Poland. I am told that Alt Rudnitz (Now Stara Rudnica) was the parish area where records were kept for Niederwutzen. Friedrich, with his wife and children came to America in 1882 along with the father Friedrich SCHIRMER born in 1805. This SCHIRMER family settled in the Faribault County, Minnesota area. Any information would be helpful. My E-Mail Address is "lesbeck@rconnect.com" Gene
