Kari,
I know this thread is 10 years old but my wife's grandfather was Joseph L. Lemiesz (1892-1970). He would be your great grandmother's brother. (his father also was Valentine Lemiesz, Bay City, Mi.) He came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin sometime before 1920 best that I can determine.

Kevin

I suspect that you are right about Jewish life events not being recorded in Catholic registries.

According to Der Kreis Wirsitz, Wissek the number of Jews living in Wissek was 5 in 1816, 128 in 1850, 41 in 1895, 34 in 1901, 35 in 1905, and 0 in 1944. The large drop between 1850 and 1895 probably was due in large measure to emigration.

My email address is teburke@mac.com. If you could email me directly, I will send whatever information I have about Wissek.

Tom Burke

Thank you for all the information. You are correct in that I don't have specific information about the exact city of origin for this line of my family. The only immigration record I've been able to find for Mendel Wald lists Wissek as the city of origin (provided it's the right record), however, in a hand-written tree completed I think by my grandmother, she listed Schneidemuhl (Pila). These two towns are only 30km apart, and so perhaps the truth is that they came from somewhere in between.

As this family was Jewish, I'm not sure how much information would be in Catholic Parish records. I know in some locales births and deaths were recorded regardless of religion (especially in the mid 1800s when the family emigrated to the U.S.), but I'm not sure that would be the case here.

Thanks again for the info - it has given me some things to think about.

Michael:
If you haven’t done so, you should read the Wikipedia entries for Wirsitz and Wysoka (the country and the city, respectively).
“Wysoka” can be confusing because it refers both to the town of Wysoka and the commune of Wysoka. The commune, which covers 123 km2 (47.5 mi2), comprises the town of Wysoka (Stadt Wissek) and 19 other villages including Wysoczka (Karlshof), Wysoka Mała (Klein Wissek), and Wysoka Wielka (Wissek Abbaue / Wissek Gross). All of the villages in Wysoka commune are listed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wysoka.
You should check for your ancestors in all of the towns because they could have been referring to Wysoka as the town or the commune.
The baptismal and marriage records to which I referred were prepared by the Roman Catholic parish of Wysoka and included parishioners from Klein Wissek, Bondetsch, Rhuden, and Heinrichsfelde. The baptisms and marriages of Evangelicals (Lutherans) were recorded in the Catholic parish’s records.
In my reply of 30 April 2013, I referred to Der Kreis Wirsitz. It lists inhabitants in 1945 and occasionally in earlier years. I have scanned through it rather hurriedly looking for Erdmann and Wald. I found a number of Erdmann’s but no Wald’s.
In Wysoka Commune
•	In 1945, there were no Erdmann’s in Stadt Wissek (Wysoka city)
In Amtsbezirk Schlossberg
•	In 1945, Fritz Erdmann had a 20 ha (50 acre) farm in Debenke - Benkenau
•	In 1945, Albert and Elizabeth Erdmann and their four children (Charlotte, Johannes, Christel, and Werner had a 46.75 ha (115 acre) farm in the village of Hermanndorf. Hermannsdorf is about 15 km northwest of Nakel and about 9 km northeast of Wirsitz (Wyrzysk)
Hi, I know this is a old post but my son in law's grandmother was Albine Stepanek. I know she had a sister named Anna and her father was Urban. Albine married Emory Papineau and they had 5 children. My son in law's mother was the youngest, she is now 62, her oldest sister is 83. There was quite a spread in age because Albine had TB and was in a Tuberculosis for some time. Anyway if you are still interested in information about them let me know and I will get you some contact information. Teresa

I have just returned from Poland,Nowa Weis (Neudorf, Prussia Holland) looking for my great-great-grandparents: Daniel Bluhm (or Blum)and wife Anna Jaekel. They were married in Neuendorph 2nd December 1847. They had a child, Johanna August Bluhm born 10th May 1862.

Johanna Bluhm was the 3rd wife (previous ones died in childbirth)of my great-grandfather, Heinrich Ferdinand Thumecke (Thiemecke) in Magdeburgh (was Prussia), now Germany, on 5th September 1891; living in the suburb of Sudenburg. They left for America soon after, living in Cleveland, Ohio where he died in 1923.

Nova Weis, if you have been there, is a dilapidated train station. I talked to all the residents, all six of them. Bluhm or Jaeckel are unknown and the telephone directory has no such listings. Bluhm seems to me a very curious last name for Polish people. They were also Protestants.

The little cluster of houses of Rychilk are the next village.

Michael:

I also am doing research on Wysoka. My father’s maternal grandparents lived there before emigrating to the U.S. in early 1866. Their names were Jan MATCZYNSKI and Christina HELINSKI.

The name Wysoka was used first in 1260. It was referred to as Wissek between 1792 and 1918 when it was initially part of the Kingdom of Prussia and then part of the German Empire. During the Nazi occupation (1939 to 1945) it was again referred to as Wissek or Wiβeck. Most of the records for your period of interest would use “Wissek.”

I found the baptismal records for Wysoka / Wissek (LDS microfilm #73019) and the marriage records (LDS microfilm #73020) to be great resources. They can be ordered at your local LDS Family History Center and viewed there. You can make prints of pages of interest, which is a bit tedious. Unfortunately, you can’t check out the films and have them professional copied.

There is an ERDMANN in my family tree: Marianna ERDMANN. She was married to Valentin NOWAKI, and they had a son (Joannes) born in 1826.

I do not have a WALD in my family tree (to the best of my knowledge).

I also use Der Kreis Wirsitz, a book publiched in 1973 that gives the history of the Kreis (county) and the various towns and villages including Wysoka / Wissek. It also names a number of the inhabitants. I will look through it for references to WALD and ERDMANN.

As for Pila / Schneidemuhl -- it is a larger town west of Wysoka, and it might have been a transfer point for a rail trip from Wysoka to the embarkation port, probably Hamburg or Bremen.

Please e-mail me at teburke@mac.com. We can compare notes.
Tom
Aloha whitewoman,

I have a Banicki line from the general Bydgoszcz area, closer in to Poznan city. Specifically, my 2nd-great-grandmother was born in Ojrzanowo, Łabisyn, Szubin, Poznań in 1866. She married in Poland, gave birth to two sons, and then moved with her family to America.

Due to the recent discovery of the exact parish she was born in, I have recently located a microfilm from the library in Salt Lake which includes baptisms, marriages and burials from Krolikowo, and I must say, there are many more Banickis on that one single microfilm than I ever dreamed -- particularly since I did not order the microfilm expecting to find the BANICKI line, rather, I was in pursuit of a different polish line in my family.

If you are still interested in collaborating about this line, feel free to contact me either here or off-site at boohergirls@gmail.com

Mahalo,
Lanea

I am trying to narrow down the location/town from where my gggg grandfather emigrated. He and his wife, Mendel (b.1823) and Rosa (b.1823, nee Erdmann or Edmond) Wald emigrated sometime around 1865 or 1866 to New York City. The only record I found gives a Mendel Wald emigrating from Wissek (Wysoka), however, my grandmother had written down that they came from Schneidemuhl (Pila). If anyone has info or knows how to get information about Wysoka from that time period it would be very helpful.

I'm searching for any information on my grandmother's family. We know almost nothing about them and I would like to at least build a family tree for my mother and her siblings.

Her name was Jozefa Krawczyk. She was born in 1922 and her birth certificate shows Kalisz as her town. Her family appear to have been farmers.

Father: Jan Krawczyk
Mother: Marianna Wilczura

My grandmother was sent to forced labour in Germany during the war, then emigrated to Canada in 1948 under her married (but then widowed) name: Strudzinska.

She married Jozef Wisniewski (of Turza) in Canada and she only visited Poland once more in her life in the 1960s when she visited Kalisz. She was the youngest of her siblings, had had a sister, Teresa Tomtas, also of Kalisz.

I'm learning Polish so that I can more thoroughly understand a lot of the records, but am having a difficult time finding source documents in the first place. Can anyone lend a hand in pointing me to useful resources? I know, broad question, but I'm just starting.

Thank you for your response to my request. Actually, a couple weeks back someone else located significant information for me and posted it here. It appears that his parents were married in Margonin which is about 50 miles north of the city of Posen/Poznan. That is close enough for me to be "close to Posen." I have odered the appropriate microfilm from Salt Lake City and will check for the family when it arrives.

Joseph Martin
Romeoville, Illinois

Joseph,
I would say there is a good chance he was born in the city of Posen, the city of Poznan today (very nice place actually). Posen was the name of a city as well as a Province and "close to Posen" could easily have been within the administrative boundaries of the city. This does not explain why you haven't found his parents marriage but have you thought of chasing his brother and/or sister-in-law? His brother is likely to have been born in the same place as him and his place of birth might be more precise on some document?

Dorota Dzienizewska, born Feb 1846, parents Matthew and Mary Spienewska.
3. Marriage of Johann Wittkowski and Dorota Dzienizewska probably 1867.
4.
Anna Warmke (aka Warnke) b. 1844 in Groß Zirkwitz

Hello,

I have been searching for 16 years to find who the parents of Ann Warmke were. I've posted on other boards, but noticed I haven't posted on this one, so thought I'd give it a try as Groß Zirkwitz of Prussia is actually in modern day Poland.

As for her birth this is what I know:
Anna Warmke was born 17 Mar 1844 in Groß Zirkwitz, Kamin, Flatow, West Prussia now known as Duza Cerkwica, Kamin?

Per her death record her father's name was George, however I do not believe he ever came to America. Her birth has also been listed as March 17, 1843 in records I have found.

As for emigration from West Prussia, I believe she probably went through Berlin and "At the age of seventeen she and a friend came over to the United States and settled at Watertown, Wis., where she remained for nine years."

Over the years I've been told the current location is now incorporated into the town Lubbenau (Sprewald), and that it was highly likely she was a Sorbian rather than a German thus sparking her departure. Why she didn't leave with her family and went just with a friend I don't know?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I've been searching so long and even had a German researcher look into it with no avail, though admittedly his expertise is more on the German side than the Poland side. She was also a devout Catholic when she immigrated to the U.S.A., so it is highly likely she belonged to a Catholic church back in the day if that helps?

Respectfully,

Kevin Strattan

Thank you for your response. On the marriage record the location for the parents was given as Detroit, which is where they were living. On the children's baptism records the lines for place of birth for father and mother were just blank. Another researcher has found information for me that is probably my family. Here I thought the church required it but than maybe things were done differently in them old days.
No help in following the female line, if they were from same general area "close to Posen". Who was the family that these 2 brothers were going to stay with.
Unfortunately, the pre 1906 naturalization intent & petition did not require a place of birth.

Have you posted on Poland's Genforum? http://genforum.com

http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/majewski.html
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/skibinski.html
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/skibi%25C5%2584ski.ht...

http://igrek.amzp.pl/mapindex.php?cat=WIG100
www.rootsweb.com/~polwgw/index.html
www.polishroots.com
www.pgsa.org
www.kartenmeister.com
www.surnamenavigator.org

Hello Mr. Kostrzewa,

I am Andrea Skarbecki, Andrzej Skarbecki's daughter.
I don't know if my mother ever kept up with anyone on here about my father and his family ties, but I was fishing around and came upon this site.
My father has since past away on April 23, 2001. He is a better place I believe.
He will be forever missed.

As for any family information you may have, I would love to acquire what you may possibly have. It would be nice to know if I have any other family out there.
There was roomer my father had another child before me? I'm not sure. The most I know is that I might have an uncle or possible older brother or sister.

Hello,
Yes I have quite a bit of info on the Rozynski's from the Cann River District, Victoria, Australia. Which date back to Sweden. My Grand Mother was Myra Ellen Rozynski, her brother was Theodore, plus other siblings.
She married Clifford Thomas Petterson. They lived in Buldah - a few miles from Cann River in the Mountains, very remote.
I have found quite a bit of info about the Ancestors who came from Sweden. Edward Charles Henry Von Rozynski etc.etc are exactly the SAME relatives I am researching !
Let me know what you need. We are most probably related - who are you ?
Deb

Seeking Posen hometown

For many years I have tried to locate the Polish hometown for my Martin Majewski without success. He was born 29 October 1867 in Posen, son of Wojciech and Michalina Majewski (no maiden name found). He immigrated through Baltimore on 17 November 1889 from Bremen with no hometown listed, traveling with his brother Michael and wife Johanna Majewski. They settled in Detroit, Michigan, where Martin married Lucy Skibinski at Sweetest Heart of Mary Church on 11 November 1890. No place of birth for Martin on the marriage record. Checked the baptism records for all of his children and not one showed a place of birth for Martin. He was naturalized in Detroit in 1902, and the record has no information about his hometown. No census record provides any help. The WWI draft card for his son Edward indicated that his father was born “close to Posen.” Place of birth on Martin’s death record is Poland, and no obituary was found in any Detroit newspaper, including the Polish paper. I have checked all the same records for his brother Michael with no success. No marriage record on the Poznan Marriage Project matches his parents, Wojciech and Michalina Majewski. Would anyone have any other ideas for me to try?

Joseph Martin
Romeoville, Illinois
IllinoisGenie@gmail.com
Dobrzec Parish index

I have finished indexing Dobrzec parish, in Kalisz county:

Dobrzec Parish, Poznan, Poland

Roman Catholic Birth Index
Years 1750-1891, 18860 records

Roman Catholic Marriage Index
Years 1768-1891, 4073 records

Roman Catholic Death Index
Years 1750-1891, 14171 records

Many of these records are small, crowded together, and difficult to read. That may increase the number of mistakes. If you find a record that you think belongs to your ancestor, please check the original microfilm to confirm that.

You can find the index here:

http://www.slupcagenealogy.com/
