I am looking for any information on the name "Han" in Poland in the late 1800s. However, I guess technically it would have been Russia at this time, but my relatives all use the classification of Polish for documentation and my grandparents spoke Polish fluently.
My search ends my with great grandfather's Ellis Island records listing Piotr Han as his father and still living in Poland. My great grandfather - Stanislaw (Stanley) Han - came over in 1913 and was born in the early 1890s. He has listed various places as his place of birth, "Ostrow Ziemia Poland", "Wiekrole Duze Poland" and "Warsaw Poland" as his place of birth in Poland.
His Ellis Island records listed him with the Surname of "Chan". However, if this is true than it is even a more uncommon name than "Han". I could also see someone with a strong Polish accent saying "Han" and having an American hear "Chan".
I realize the records for Poland, especially in this time frame are poor, but any information about this Surname can be helpful. Heck, really any one else of Polish decent named "Han" in all of history will also be helpful.
Thanks.
