Hi, Kathy,

Looking at Anna Lipska's manifest, her last residence looks like Dolnowitz, Russia. The residence of her uncle Mikolai (M not N) looks like Roszyszki. The last residence of her travel companion, Franziska Milewska, looks like Teresch, Russia and the residence of her mother Maryanna Milewska looks like Roszeszki. If you compare the "y" in the name Maryanna to the "y" in Roszyszki you'll see they look the same. Anna's place of birth looks like it says Galanewiczo (could be a phonetic spelling for Dolnowitz or vice versa). The Hamburg departure manifest for the same voyage also gives Dolnowitz as Anna's last residence and Teresch as Franziska's last residence. These two towns must be near each other as well as Roszyszki/Roszeszki.

Iwan's passenger manifest states he last resided and was born in Leoja, Russia (as did the four passengers preceding him and another passenger three lines above them). Since Iwan's name is Russian instead of the Polish Jan, I wonder if they were from a part of the Russian partition of Poland that is no longer in Poland. It could be in Belarus, Lithuania, or Russia now and would have a different spelling to reflect the language of the country in which it is today.

Did you see the arrival record for Amalia Lipsky, who sailed on the SS Batavia and arrived at the port of NY on 14 April 1907? She was from Galonowicz, Russia and was going to Exeter, NY (looks like going to brother Marek? Lipsky). Her place of birth was spelled Gaunowicze/Gaunowicza. Possibly a relative?

If your grandmother never obtained citizenship and was still living in 1940, she would have been required by the US government to file an alien registration form under the Alien Registration Act of 1940. The info contained on these registration forms are just as detailed as that found on naturalization records. I'd strongly advise you to obtain a copy of her registration form, if she was living in 1940. More info here: http://www.ancestrymagazine.com/2003/05/features/alien-regis...
