Hello,

I admit that Alois Schembor originally came from Austria and was part of the Schwendtbauer family clan.

My arguments:

a) Alois is an Austrian/Bavarian name and very rare in Porussia

b) he is catholic

c) Silesia attracted a lot of workers from 1850 on

d) Schwendtbauer in strong austrian accent sounds simmilar like "Schembor" in the ears of a non-austrian.

In those days there was neither a High-German language nor a generally respected grammar.

I researched the Schwendtbauer family from its first appearence in 1409 and am available under 02011966 (at) gmx.de

Thomas

He also had received the Medal of Independence for his work in striving to free Poland and return it to the Republic of Poland.
Panewniki cemetery is where he was buried with military honor.
If you have come across any of these names in your searches please leave a comment.
Any information would be appreciated.
Good luck in your search!
Karola
I found many of my Upper Silesian ancestral family members' Catholic church records --baptisms, marriages, and deaths in the curia of the Archdiocese of Katowice. The custodian of the archive records there is a very capable and helpful gentleman, Dr. Wojciech Schaffer, who communicates in both Polish and English. For a little less than $20.00 per document, he will render magnificent official transcriptions of requested church documents of baptism, marriage, or death. The archived records are from medieval times to about the World War II era. More contemporary Catholic church records are maintained by the parishes where the events were officiated.

Since my last post, I have learned that the children of Anton Duda and Sophia Miller were born in what is now Babienica, Gmina Woźniki, Lubliniec County, Silesian Voivodeship. Sophia Miller is from the same village.

Although unconfirmed, I believe my Anton Duda was born in Wozniki (German Woischnik) to Stephan Duda and Marianna Zok. Stephan and Marianna had children Valerian, Mathias, John, Felix, Elisabeth, Anton, Magdalena and Joseph.

I couldn't help but notice the Hornick name in your post. I am a descendant of the Hoehnich family of Upper Silesia. The Polish spelling of my ancestral family name is Hennich. Could your Hornick family be the same as my ancestral family? I shall look forward to hearing from you.

My ancestor, Marianna Duda Lepiarz, is the daughter of Bernhard Duda (died before 1757). Marianna Duda Lepiarz lived at Stanitz, near Gross Rauden at the time of her son, Lorenz Lepiarczyk's birth in 1759. If you find a connection with my Duda ancestral family, please advise me. May God bless all members of our Duda families always.

I think Bura and Bury are different surnames.
http://www.herby.com.pl/indexslo.html
Rymut combines masculine and feminine into one list, not separate ones, as moikrewny does. Thus:
Bura 2400 and Bury 5825.
Hi Zlatica,

The Sól (meaning "the salt") you found was probably the only one in Galicia (even if it is now in Silesia administrative region):

https://maps.google.pl/maps?q=s%C3%B3l,+rajcza&hl=en&amp...

Bura could be another surname, but in this case it is most probably the feminine form of Bury surname. But therefore the distribution of Bura will not be meaningful as it will most probably combine the two surnames. That does not apply to the distribution of Bury.

An older friend of mine longs to know more about his grandfather, Wilhelm August Zietzke, who was born in Myslowitz in 1830 and came to the U.S. in about 1860 (to Montana). He was German-speaking. I have found a lot about his life in AMerican, but I haven't been able to trace any Zietzkes back to Germany/Prussia/now Poland... It's just too far away and too long ago and I don't speak German or Polish! I would love to be able to find out who Wilhelm's parents were, or anything about his background!

I haven't come across anything mentioning the change of last name and unfortunately, I don't have any other information about him. He did have 2 children - Anna and Joseph.

My 4th great-grandmother was Marianna Klamerus who married Michal Maciasz. I haven't yet determined a relationship, if any, to the Frank Klamerus mentioned above as she would have been 3 generations back from him.

If any of this sounds like it may be a connection, please let me know and we can see if we can piece it together.

Silesian Visit Was Splendid

I have just returned home with my father from our Silesian visit. We are both blessed with treasured memories from our visit to our ancestral homeland. It was glorious to see Aunt Regina so vibrant for her youthful 80 years. My first cousins all were so welcoming to see and to enjoy their company. I enjoyed seeing cousins whom I hadn't seen in ten years! I especially enjoyed meeting fifth cousins whom I had never known. Visiting the school in Ligota, Rybnik where my father, grandfather, grandmother, aunt, and family members attended was a special joy. Attending Midngight Mass at the Saint Anthony Basilica in Rybnik with my father and family members was a special blessing for Christmas 2011. Dad received his sacrament of Confirmation in Saint Anthony in the 1940s before it was a basilica. I am richly blessed that I was able to procure so many copies of family documents for my esteemed Lepiarczyk family genealogy. I am a proud member of the Lepiarczyk, Kania, Szymura, Jagielka, Groborz, Hennich, Szula, Nowak, and allied families. My ancestral families have lived in Upper Silesia for more than five generations! I am the first member of my Lepiarczyk family to have been born in the United States of America. I hope to return to beautiful Upper Silesa before another ten years passes. I look forward to receiving communications from descendants of my ancestral families: sir_erwin@yahoo.com May God bless all members of my Upper Silesian families always.

Churla & other surnames from Radziechowy area of Zywiec

My great grandmother's name was Aniela Churla (Ciurla). She was born to Joseph and Katherine Churla in 1906, likely in the Radziechowy area or possibly Bielsko-Biala area. Her mother passed away in 1909, and a woman named Mary Mizera (apparently her or her husband John were cousins to the Churla family) helped raise her. Joseph Churla is believed to have died in Poland in 1931. Aniela came to Coleman, Alberta from Poland in 1926, and married my great grandfather, Andrew Zur, later that year. From information I have gathered from Joseph Churla's will, and from research done by my great aunt & I, I know a little bit about Aniela Churla's siblings:

Michal Churla was born in approx 1889. He came to Canada in 1909 and on the 1911 census he was living in Coleman, AB with someone named Martin Churla. I do not know what the relation is, but I am thinking Martin is an uncle. Michal stayed in Canada for sometime and eventually went back to Poland, living in Bielsko-Biala.
Anna Churla was born in approx 1894 and died in Dec 1983. Her married name was Jarczyk and she had two daughters named Janka and Josie. Josie married someone named Kazik Tos.
Frank (Franz) Churla lived in Radziechowy and had twelve children.
John (Jan) Churla was an engineer, and his second wife's name was Irene. He died in Poland in 1973.
I know little of Ludwig Churla. All I know is that he has a son named Walter Churla, and he has several children.
Maria Churla died in Dec 1984 and her married name was Tyrlik. She had two daughters named Irene and Anna. Irene married Karl Kanik and Anna married a man named Joseph Widzyk.
Wojtek (Albert) Churla later changed his last name to Stankiewicz. He had two children named Ted and Irene.
There was also Victoria Churla, but I do not have any useful information on her.

The following surnames are associated (or believed to be) with the Zur & Churla families. The majority of them are from Radziechowy or Zywiec in general, and later ended up in North America:

Mizera, Tyrlik, Habdas, Yagos (Jagosz), Michalski, Stopka, Yakubiec, Rypien, Sapeta, Klis

If anyone has additional information regarding ANY Zur or Churla families, or any other possible associated surnames, please contact me at chantelle_0130@hotmail.com Thanks so much!

"Zur" or "Zurowej" from Radziechowy area

I am looking for any pieces of information in relation to my surname, as well as others that I believe are related!

My great grandfather was Andrew (Andrzej) Zur, he was born in 1891 in Zywiec. He came to Canada from Poland in 1912 or 1913, *possibly* with his best friend Paul Stopka, and he eventually found his way to Coleman, Alberta where he married my great grandmother, Aniela Chrula (or Ciurla) in 1926. I do not know the names of Andrew's parents. I do know he had a sister named Julia (her married name was Habdas). My great aunt knew a cousin of hers named Stanley Zur in Poland, although I do not know for sure if this was a cousin of Andrew's or a nephew perhaps. Andrew also had a cousin named John (Jan) Zur and he was born around 1882. He did come to Canada, where he later died in the 1940's I believe.
In Aniela Churla's father's will, her married name is spelled as "Zurowej". Does anyone know whether this is how it was typically spelled or pronounced in Poland? I was always told by family that our last name "Zur" was shortened, but from what we do not know. Any bits of information, even regarding possible related surnames, would be so helpful!

Thank you for your information. After I posted this last night and with the help of google translate I was able to locate the same church you came up with. http://diecezja.bielsko.pl/parafia/90,krzyowa_niepokalanego_...
Now I just have to write them a letter in Polish, which of course I have no clue! Imagine that, a Pole in Chicago not knowing how to write Polish. Something is wrong with that!

Hello,
There is a parish in Krzyzowa:
Parafia Niepokalanego Serca NMP
34-335 Krzyżowa
Jana Pawła II 226
phone: 0048 338636634
Some records can also be found (perhaps) in a church archive in Krakow and, maybe, in Bielsko-Biala as this church belongs to a dioecesis in Bielsko-Biala (athough this is relatively new dioecesis). I do not know how od this parish is so you may also consider a parish in Jelesnia.
Krzyzowa is not in Tatra mountains, they are called Beskid Zywiecki, Tatra mountains are to the south-east from that area.
Zbyszek
Village of Krzyzowa

I have reason to believe that my family roots go back to the very small village of Krzyzowa. It's a very small village on the Tatra mountains just south of Jelesnia(where some others in the heritage came from) in the area of Zywiec Slaskie. According to wikipedia the population is just 1,444. Was wondering if anyone knows of the Catholic Churches and cemeteries in the area and/or where to contact to get any records from this area. Also if you happen to know any useless information on this village.
Thank you, Ryan Jedrzejas
