Polish family name Sutor came from the Latin word for a shoemaker. For the first time it was mentioned in 1314.
http://www.stankiewicze.com/index.php?kat=44&sub=827

I am looking to see if any relatives are still in this town. My Great Grandmother, Mary Petruskova Sabolova married Juraj Chovanec. I am not sure when Mary came over to the US but she must have traveled back and forth bringing her children: Anna, George, Mary, Elizabeth and Irvin. Mr. Chovanec never made it to the U.S. I believe he died in 1914 but I'm not sure where. If anyone can help, that would be great. My husband and I will be traveling there next week to at least see the town. If anyone would like to meet, please respond back.

Dear Jane:

My Grandmother, Mary Kupiec (nee Lesniak) was born in 1896 in Swiniarsko, Poland, a small village across the Dunajec River near Nowy Sacz. My Grandfather, Joseph Kupiec was born in 1893 in Rudawa, Poland, which is about 100 kilometers northeast of Nowy Sacz. They met in Cleveland and were married on November 11, 1919. My Grandfather had an older sister, Franciszka, born in 1890 in Rudawa, a younger brother, Ignacy, born in 1896 in Kazimierza Mala, and a younger sister, Zofia, born in 1900 in Kazimierza Mala. Not sure if there is a connection here other than the Kupiec name. Perhaps you know something different. Thank you. Joe

Joe,

I think we are related through Kupiec lines. My grandmother was Elzbieta Krzak Gomolka(1897), daughter of Sophia Kupiec. She was from that same area, but Przyszowa in listed on her birth certificate. She immigrated to Cleveland, married my grandfather, Stanislaw Gomolka, and ultimately moved to Garfield Heights. My father was her son, Bernard. I grew up in Garfield Heights and we all went to SS. Peter and Paul Parish. Perhaps our grandmothers were first cousins?

Please check your information as I have very little to go by. I do know that Sophia Kupiec Krzak was supposed to be the third wife of Josephus Krzak. That's where my knowledge ends.

Thanks,
Jane

Probably occurred abt 1830-1840. Do you have a lineage for your Barbara? My ggg was Michael Cwiklik.

Yes, I would really like some help. I dont know a lot about this part of my family. My grandfather had died by the time I was born and my grandmother died shortly thereafter. My father was in the military and because he had top secret security clearance, he was not allowed to communicate with his relatives in Poland since it was a Communist country. I am sure that my grandparent had siblings (my grandfather had a least a brother and a sister) and my grandmother had a sister. Here is the info I do have: My grandmother was born Anna Strama October 31, 1887 and her parents names are John and Stella Strama. She immigrated to the US in 1904. My grandfather was names Andrew Takuski/Takusky and was born October 25, 1888. His parents were Fred and Mary A Takuski/Takusky. My grandfather was listed as being from Nowy Targ and My grandmother lists as being from Czerwienne on the immigrations records. Any information you can find would be helpful. Let me know if you need any other info. Thanks!!

I did not receive a reply on my query. I was hoping that Peter Dynda was still active on the board. He was the one who seemed to know a lot about the town. We were there in 2005 on a very rainy day---went to the church and cemetery. The records they had at the church were the same I had from microfilm. Did not see any graves with my ancestor's names but then the cemetery was in poor shape and it was raining and difficult to get around. Still looking for info on the town.

My Cwiklik family from Luzna immigrated to the US between 1902 and 1912. I have a letter from Jan Bryla to my grandfather, Frank Cwiklik. I understand they were best friends.
You are correct. The head priest in Niedzwiedz has a bad attitude and will not let anyone touch the books. I will look at my notes and get back with you. I have been to Konina twice. The last time being in 2010. I have a lot of family in Konina. I will see how I can help you. Thank you for writing.

Stephen Sutor

Researching the Hanula connection to my Majerczyk family from Konina, Poland. In the ship records Michal and Zofia Hanula came over and the person they were traveling to see in Chicago was a cousin Maciej Majerczyk. I am related on the Majerczyk side and wondered if you could help me with the family connection. I was just in Konina and found more cousins on the Majerczyk side. The priest in Niedzwiedz was not very nice or accommodating to help in my research. Any help would be appreciated. Allen

My grandmother was born Antonia Strama in 1887 and my grandfather was Andrew Takuski/Takusky born in 1888. His parents were Fred and Mary A Takuski. Her parents were John and Stella Strama. I believe their parents and siblings stayed in Poland. Any ideas on where to find info about their parents and siblings...census records, local Catholic churches?? Thanks in advance

My Family of Hovanyetz are also from Hungary (Slovakia). They cam t to live in New York and New Jersey areas, as far as I know. My Grandfather had land there which he passed on to my grandmother and then to my Mother, in 2005 the government of Kesmark took it over as lost lands. It was recorded in the land records books as minor Gertruda Hovanetzova (father Alexander) from Kežmarok address Ľubicka street no. 13 now on America heritage (21 december 1933). My grandfather's last was spelled with a C at the beginning. He also had a sister who came to the states first name Susanna or may have been spelled Zuzanna. She also could have spelled the last name different from her brother's. I do not know her married name. I do know she was catholic. When my grandfather passed away, my mother was only 4 years of age and my grandfather's sister insisted that my grandmother raise my mother catholic. My mother was sent to a boarding school. My mother went to a catholic boarding school in upstate New York. Being that my grandmother was widowed and my Aunt was married, my grandmother Mary Hovanyetz had to comply or Alexander’s Sister would have my mother Gertrude from her mother.
If any of this should sound familiar to any one, that may know of a Susanna Hovanyetz or named sounding the same but spelled different, please get a hold of me, we may be related on my Grandfathers side. I also have photos to match up if any one has photos.
Hello there. I am certain we are related. My name is Joseph Kupiec, born July 15, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio. I have lived in Henderson, Nevada (suburb of Las Vegas) since April 15, 1997. My Grandmother was Marya Barbara Kupiec (nee Lesniak) born December 1, 1896, in Swiniarsko, Poland, and died on August 31, 1971, in Garfield Heights, Ohio. Her parents were Wojciech Lesniak (previously listed on this post as George in error), and Zofia Lesniak (nee Skoczen), the daughter of Jan (John) and Agnieszka Skoczen (nee Skoczen, yes that's correct). I have lots of information and photos for you. The Lesniak and Skoczen families are alive and well in Swiniarsko and Nowy Sacz, Poland. I have been in contact and will visit them for the first time this summer. My research started a few years ago to learn more about the Polish and Italian (Sottosanti) sides of my family, and with the help of two genealogists, I have very much to share. Your ears must have been burning, because I have spoken with my parents recently and often about the Skoczen family. Recently we were wondering about someone perhaps named Connie. We weren't sure if she was a Skoczen, and Augustyn Lesniak (age 80, and my Grandmother's Brother's Son, and Wojciech and Zofia's Grandson) who lives in Swiniarsko asked about her. Regardless, please correspond with me via e-mail at davinci43@aol.com. Also, in the meantime, you can look up our family tree under Kupiec/Sottosanti Family Tree on Ancestry.com. Thank you for your post, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. With Warmest Regards, Joe

Oh, yes. This is the same family. As I mentioned in my previous post, you might want to look at the Kupiec/Sottosanti Family Tree on Ancestry.com. As you will see, there were more children of Jan and Agnieszka Skoczen. Some of the dates of birth or deaths are slightly different or missing so far, but were taken from microfilm records. As information, my Father is Tadeusz Jan Kupiec (Theodore John in the US) born June 13, 1924, and my Mother is Mary Catherine Kupiec (nee Sottosanti) born May 6, 1928. They were both born in Cleveland, Ohio, and are alive and well and living in Henderson, Nevada, too. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Give our warmest regards to all of the Skoczen family for us, because we never forgot about all of you!

My Grandfather John Skoczen was also born in Swiniarsko, Poland on 5-24-1878 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio in 1902.I recently developed a five generation Skoczen family tree of his 126 descendants. My Grandfather was the oldest of siblings Anna, Michael, Sophia, Maria, Joseph, Rosalia (dob 5-25-1891),Woichiech (dob 9-30-1893) & Stanley. Maybe your father Jozef & my father Charles , born in 1911, are cousins?

Hello. Looking for information on Garwol. Surnames related in that tree were Cygan & Stefaniak from Buffalo, NY. I have reason to believe I have a connection to a Garwol family tree with members who migrated to Illinois and the creator of the tree also agrees as his tree has Cygan, Stefaniak & Garwol however neither one of us can find where it connects. I suspect that one of his Garwol members is the sister of one of my Garwol members. Do you have any connections with these names?

I have some information about Szczypta, Fudala and Orszulak surnames. These names are all associated with the village Odrowaz and other villages in the Nowy Targ, Czarny Dunajec area. Go to PolishOrigins.com to see other surnames.

Please share the information you have about Orszulak family. I am looking for family of Jan Orszulak (born ?) and wife Kunegunda Gal (born 1864 in Odrowaz). Their son Wincenty (Vincent) Orszulak was born in Odrowaz in 1897 (died 1941) and married Rozalia Lyszczaczyk from Pieniakowice Poland in 1928.
Thank you.
