I note that only indirectly did your question about the mother of August get answered. It was Emelia Kasten. Do not know why the three Schmiginsky brothers used different spellings of the surname. Ernst used Schmiginske, Julius used Schmeginske and William used Schmiginsky.

woodx029@umn.edu

My maternal grandmother was Ernestine Schmiginsky Kelm. My mother told me and also left written records that Ernst was a brother to Ernestine. Other siblings were Emelia, Friederika, William, Christiana, Julius Jr., and a half brother Frank Ganske. My position has been until someone proves it wrong beyond a shadow of a doubt I accept what my mother told me to be true. See attached wedding picture of Ernst and Emelia Kasten. As you may know Ernst is buried in Ebenezer Cemetery near Paynesville, MN next to his son Eli and just a few feet from half brother Frank and their mother Wilhelmine. Jason will have a lot more info for you.

I will throw in my two cents worth. Ernestine and William Kelm were my grandparents. Here is run down on the folks in the Fred Wagner household. Amelia (aka Emelia), Ernestine and Ernst were siblings. Frank was a half brother. Minnie (aka Wilhelmine) was the mother. Gottlieb Ganske was her second husband the father of Frank. First husband was Julius Schmiginsky Sr. Fred was Amelia's husband and August was their son. William Kelm was Ernestine's husband and Augusta (aka Gustie) was their daughter. Other Schmiginsky siblings were Friederika (Mrs Carl Sefkow), William, Christiana (Mrs August Schultz) and Julius Jr.
I am searching for the Rackow / Rakow surname in Pommern, Germany in the last half of the 1800's. Older family members think that my husband's great-grandfather was born in the Kolberg (Kolobrzeg) area. In fact, the little village that they settled in is called Kolberg, Wisconsin.

Here is the little I know about my husband's great-grandfather.

FREDERICK WILHELM RACKOW was born July 6, 1842 in Pommern, Germany. I have no ideal of his parents' names. He married KAROLINE KERSTEN abt 1870 (or before that date) in Pommern, Germany. They were of the LUTHERAN religion. They immigrated from Hamberg, Germany and arrived in New York in August of 1871. Their first child, MARY MARIE RACKOW was born August 28, 1871 in Wisconsin. (In the first years in America, Frederick sometimes signed his name as Frederick or Wilhelm Rakow.)

A man named AUGUST RAKOW was Frederick's neighbor for many years in Door County, Wisconsin. I don't know if he was a relative or just a neighbor, but his children were witnesses in several of Frederick Rackow's children's weddings. August was born sometime around 1828 in Pommerania.

Does this sound familiar? I would enjoy hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Karen Rackow
Enno,
The Ernst Machert I have in my family (my great-great grandfather on my mother's side) was born about 1842 and died 25 Jul 1907 in Chicago IL. His wife's name (per my great grandmother's death certificate) was Bertha Seiloff. Ernst and Bertha had at least 4 children, Mary, Anna (my great grandmother) Paul and Emma. Based upon a 1920 Census for my great grandmother Anna she was born in Keslein as were both her parents. I know nothing further on this line going back to Germany (or Poland) I've recently been in contact with another genealogist (I think you know her, Henning?)who I believe may have further information but I cannot collaborate the Ernst Machert is the same at this time.
If you can confirm you have in your family an Ernst who was married to a Bertha, and they had at least four children including a Mary (or Marie) Anna, Paul and Emma, and the whole family emmigrated to the US about 1881 or 1883 we may have a match :) I'm hoping so!
You can email me directly at alison.kozar@gmail.com and I can fill in the information on Ernst and Bertha after they arrived in the US.
Thanks,
Alison

My name is Enno Ernst Otto Machert from the City of Kiel on the Baltic Sea in Germany. I hit on this entry by chance and it got me curious.
My grandfather`s name in fact was Ernst Machert born in Lower Silesia (former East German province now Poland) but I know that his family originated from Kolberg (former province of Pomerania now Poland) which is pretty close to Köslin. Besides the name Ernst seems to have run in the family for quite a while, either as first or middle name. I am a college teacher of English in Germany, that might help with exchanging info and conversation.
So there is reason to suppose that we are remote relatives.

Do you know anymore on the history of the Kroening's who came from Stettin? We have in our family tree: Herman Kroening, born 1825, and his wife - Hulda Bruggeman b. 1840, both born in Stettin. Herman is said to have come in 1872 with 4 children and met with Hulda, who had come some time earlier, in Milwaukee. Their only son died at sea on the trip but their 3 daugthers went on to marry and raised large families. Hulda had worked as a nurse/governess in Milwaukee. The family eventually moved and settled near Austin, Minnesota. Herman and Hulda are buried at St. Michael's Church in Waltham, MN. On his stone the name reads, "Herman GE Krohning". I have not had any luck finding any other information on Herman's parents or siblings, but was curious to see you have family from the same area with the same last name. Do you know anymore of Kroening family history? Thanks, Dale

Unfortunately, I know very little about the family before they arrived in Wausau. Your Herman seems a little old to be a brother to Robert & August, though there probably is a connection since they were all born in Stettin. ---

Have you found ANY information about your Herman's parents or siblings? Perhaps with that information and if I could find August & Robert's parents we can link these families together. ---

I'm going to print off your info to keep with my research. Maybe someday we'll be able to link these families together. :) ---

Feel free to e-mail if you find anything!
For the record contrary to what census' may show relative to Fred Schmiginsky and Ernst Schmiginsky I do not think they were brothers. In notes left by my mother, whose mother was Ernestine Schmiginsky sister of Ernst, she never refers to Fred as a brother to her mother. Her usual reference to Fred and his family was St.Cloud (MN) relatives.
Maynard Wood

hello. i hope that carolyn wagner can help you. as to where and which way the family immigranted i dont know. it could of been through canada or through somewhere in the u.s. i talked to my mom and she said met augusta and knew her the most because she lived in paynesville. august, amelia (not sure in ever met her), and your bennie she only heard in conversion, and never met. she doesnt even know what they ever looked liked. john wagner (her grandfather) she knew well enough even though he was a tough man to get to know. if you have a family portiat that is cool. it is nice at times of having information to see a face to the person if it works out. any questions, etc. let me know.

Hi Jason,

The line that you speak of was my daughter Amanda's. I found the names of Gotlieb Schmiginsky & Wilhelmina Krueger on Amelia Schmiginsky Wagner's death certificate. I think my mother might have a portrait of the family Fred, Amelia, August, Augusta, John F and my Bennie in about 1905 to 1910. Bennie was born in 1899 and in the picture he could be about 6-11 years of age. I'll see what I can find.
hello. the information you have on there is helpful. ernst schmiginsky lived with his brother fred. fred immigranted in 1888 according to my records. i do a few questions. do you know of any photos in existence of your grandfather and that line which would include my greatgrandfather john wagner and going back to his parents/uncles/aunts? i do have some of him but interesting to know if there is any more out there.i also came across on familytreemaker.com a site which listed in chart and table form decsendants of your daughter kristen. i was able to follow from my grandmother evalyn wagner to frederick wagner & ameila schmiginsky. after that it stated amelia's parents were gotlieb schmiginsky & wilhelmina krueger. is there any names on that list that go back farther for gotlieb and wilihelmina respectfuly? if any questions or exchange information just let me know and be happy to do so. hope to hear back from you in good time. later, jason knutson.

It's nice to meet another cousin!!! The other Schmiginsky must of come through Canada. They have a daughter Katie that on the census was born there, while the others say Germany or Minnesota. Thank you for the clue of Carolyn Wagner Swyter. I will contact her. Do you know how this family came into Minnesota, was it through Canada also, or the USA? I have tried through the years checking the US sources, but to no avail. I'm going to Paynesville and St. Cloud to go through records for land titles, and other pertinent data. I love the hunt and discovery of the finds and the people (family) you meet along the way. I'm sure we will talk again. my personal email is mariel@lakeland.ws Thanks again Maynard, Marie
hello. i got a look at the sheets you sent susuan graham that had a schmiginsky family document, and wilhelmina schmiginsky data sheet. that has been the information i have been looking for along time now. i very interested in seeing more of what you have on her descendants in whatever way it would work the best. i do have a few questions. what date did julius schmiginsky die? he have wife and kids? can you explain how the relationship works of fred schmiginsky (married to amelia wagner)having a sister named emilie and her father being robert schmiginsky? i didnt get how that worked.
i do have a picture of amelia wagner (but maybe the same one in the book carolyn wagner did). do you have or know of any pictures other relatives have of the schmiginsky children like william, ernestine, etc? i know it is a long shot question but it doesnt hurt to ask. i can give you any information on amelia schmiginsky wagner line if you wish. i am open to trade of information/photos. if these questions are answered better by getting the rest you have on the schmiginsky please let me know so it can be made possilbe. thank you for answering back. later, jason knutson.

Hi Jason,

My name is Marie (Wagner) Loughlin. I live about 80 miles from St. Cloud, in Wisconsin. My Grandfather was Arthur Benjamin (aka Bennie) Wagner born in 1899 in Eden Lake Township, Stearns Co., MN to Frederick and Amelia (Schmiginski) Wagner. His siblings were August, Augusta, and John F. I located them on the first US Federal Census of 1900 living in Eden Lake Twp on the same page as William Schmiginski. I started looking about 10 years ago, then real life got in the way so they had to be put on the back burner for awhile, and now I'm checking again. I was excited to learn that Ancestry.com had just put on the Minnesota Territorial Census online for the years of 1885, 1895 and 1905. I found the Wagners doing a soundex search
They were listed a little strangely, but that could of been do to the fact they might of not spoken English very well considering they had only been here about a year. This is how it reads.
Fred Weigner Head of household age 24 Germany
Amelia " age 23 Germany
August " age 4 Germany
William Sulm (Kelm) age 23 Germany
Ernstine " age 21 Germany
Auguste " age 2/12 Minn
Gottlieb Granskie(Schmiginski) age 62 Germany
Minnie " age 56 Germany
Frank " age 7 Germany
Ernst McGinski (Schmiginski) age 14 Germany

I'm still checking the 1895 Territorial I found Ernst Schmiginski age 24 living with another Schmiginski family in Paynesville that immigrated in 1888. I would love to compare notes. I haven't been to the Stearn History center yet, but plan a visit there and the court house soon.

Great to hear some one else is looking into the family also. Hope to hear from you soon.

Marie

The info from the MN Territorial Census is very interesting. I had not picked up on that. The info in the 1885 census would have been about two months after this family arrived in the U.S. William Kelm and Ernestine Schmiginsky Kelm are my grandparents. Augusta was their first child. Minnie is Wilhelmina Krueger Schmiginsky Ganske. She is the mother of Amelia, William, Ernestine, Frank and Ernst.Another son Julius also immigrated with this group. Two other daughters, Friederike and Chistiana were already in the U.S. Gottlieb Ganske was Wilhelmina's second husband. Frank was their son. Not quite sure who the Schmiginsky is that immigrated in 1888. Maybe it was Fred. That family may have come through Canada and perhaps lived there a while before coming to the U.S. Have not established the exact relationship of Fred to the other Schmiginsky's.
If you are looking for info on the Wagner Family you really need to contact Carolyn Wagner Swyter in Paynesville, MN. She had done extensive research on the Wagner Family.
Contact me if you are interested in descendants of Wilhelmina Schmiginsky Ganske.

Maynard Wood

Ernst and Bertha (nee Seiloff) Machert Family Possibly from Köslin

Researching my grandmother's mother, Anna Wolter (nee Machert) who came to the US in the late 1800's as a young girl, possibly 1881 or 1883 and settled in Chicago IL. On the 1920 Chicago census records it shows the town of Keslein Germany as where Anna originated from. Anna's father was Ernst or Ernest Machert, mother Bertha (nee Seiloff possibly), older sister was Mary or Marie, brother Paul and youngest sister Emma. We may have found an entry for the mother and four children aboard the ship Vandalia in 1881 and I'm trying to both confirm and trace back to where they originated
If anyone has any information on either the family or whether Keslein could in fact be Köslin I would love to hear.
Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!
Ali

Hi,

What US records do you already have? If you haven't obtained any baptismal records for any children born to them in the US, you should. Sometimes it will list the exact place the parents were born. Keep in mind that just because one child's record doesn't give the exact POB for the parents, it doesn't mean that none of the others won't either. A friend had to send for all thirteen baptismal records for her g-grandparents children because only ONE of them listed their exact place of birth!

Also, be aware that Koszalin may be a reference to the name of the largest city, the county, or the district where your ancestors were from.

Here are some other potential sources on which you might find the town name:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~polwgw/howto.html

http://www.rootsweb.com/~polwgw/america.html

Regards,
MJ

Hi Again - You ask such good questions and I am so glad to help and work on the Manz family once again. I believe I can answer at least some of the questions below, plus give you a lot of background material. I don't know where you live, but in Stearns County, MN there is a Historial Museum that has the book "Herman L. (Ludwig) Manz" and it was written by his children who were my great aunt and uncle. Because Minnie's father was a brother to Herman L., there is a fair amount of information in that book that you would probably enjoy. If you don't have access to that book - there might be others floating around the libraries of the country even though it was privately published - I can scan and send pages. So I don't re-invent the wheel, it would be helpful to know what research you've done - have you looked at ancestry.com or familysearch.org? If not, no problem -- but there is some basic information there on Minnie, her parents, and her husband and family etc. I suggest we take this off the board, if you don't mind, as I have almost too much to post here. If you'd like to email me at sug53@earthlink.net I will start to gather some of this information for you. Thanks for contacting me - it will be fun to share! Sue
