Garland,
I have a copy of a hand drawn map of the Village in 1945. On it were drawn approx. where families had lived. It shows where the Church was, and is still standing. The only family name that you listed is Willie Schulz. Would this be of your family? There were probably many other names of people who had lived there, that the person drawing the map did not know about, as at one time, it was much larger.

I do have a copy of History on Islinger Village, some pictures we took while there, and some older pictures of Isinger, sent me by others. I would be happy to share them per e-mail. If you would like copies, send me your e-mail address. Have you been there?

ISINGER-(NOW NIEBOROWO) VILLAGE IN POLAND

We just returned from Stettin(Szczecin) & visited Nieborowo
which was the Village our GFather, Wilhelm Oehlke came
from in 1884. The village was still much as it was long ago.
There was a young man there with a hand drawn map of the
Village, showing names of who had lived in the village, where
their houses were, etc. The Old Church was still being used
that was blt. in early 1500's. I took a digital picture of the map
and would share with you the names that were on it. I don't
know how complete this map is, and looks like the date it was
done, was 1945. I also cannot say how accurate it is, it did
have our G.Grandfathers name on it & 3 other Oehlke names.
So we knew we were in the correct place.
I would be glad to send you the names that are on the map,
if you had family from Isinger, now Nieborowo.

Nelda Thompson
neldathompson@sbcglobal.net.
Has anyone researched this area in the Pomorskie Region?
My great grandfather, John DARGAS (born Dec 1880)married in Chicago, IL listed his birthplace as Wysoka, Chojnice. His parents are Ludwig Dargas and Franciszka WOJACZEK( her parents are Jan and Rozalia HAMADA). I can't seem to find anything on any of these names, the death certificates from Chicago provide nothing. A death notice for Ludwig Dargas mentioned a brother, Franciszek TYBORA. If anyone could share some information on this town/village or these names. I also can't seem to figure out which LDS film it would be on.

Greetings,

I am researching my wife's family tree. It is a Polish line, and neither she nor I read Polish.

It turns out her immigrant ancestor (came to US in 1887) was from Borzechowo (about 30 miles from Gdansk). So I would like some help:

1) Is there any such thing as a local directory of the town during this period? It might be helpful to find out what he or his family did in that period before coming to the States. If not, is there a census prior to that which might shed light on the question?

2) Is there a local history of the town that might have information on local conditions at the time of emigration?
Ideally such a work would be in English.

3) Is there a good English-language history of Poland that would shed light on German-controlled Poland during this period (e.g., events, conditions, etc.)?

The latter two, I hope, might provide a clue on why he emigrated.

Thanks!

Chris Brennan
Abrahami de Melverda - Gdansk

One of my ancestors supposedly came from Gdansk. There's an oral history about him, stating he was a court physician who during a visit to the Frisian stateholder court fell in love with a lady in Friesland, The Netherlands. Her name was Treslong or Tresling.

His name was Ludovicus Abrahamy/Abrahami de Melverda. I have found a certificate for his son - Abraham Ludovicus/Lodewijks - that specifies he was born in 1636 in Gdansk, so that may be true.

I'm having a very difficult time trying to link the name Melverda to Gdansk/Poland, and am wondering whether anybody might have suggestions or even access to very old records there.

Any help and/or info is much appreciated!

I am looking for any information related to these surnames in this area. Schonfliess must have been a very small bend in the road. It is located between present day Trzepowo and Nowa Karczma. German names Strippau and Neukeng, I believe. I see a place called Szumles Krolewski that seems to be the correct location.

Any information from this area would be helpful. Other names are Kowalke, Karnath, Patzke, Henning, Grosse, Jonas, Lehrke, Hoffman, Engler, Lenser, and Plath.

Several of these families left in the 1880's and came to Wisconsin.

MALECHA in Poland

My name is Victor Malecha, I live in Brasilia Brazil
Maybe you could give me a hand, I am looking to find relatives of my grandfather, also find documents of my grandfather that I can take the dual nationality, but have not found much, anything that can help me a lot and I have managed to find the internet.

As my grandfather died when I was only 1 year, not had any contact with him and my grandmother died when I was 8 years, then my mother who has contact me some things and my aunts (sisters of my grandmother).

My grandfather called Joseph Malecha (which is written in the portfolio of foreign), I think it was in Polish Jozef, and not really know how malecha is in Polish. He was born on 19/02/1904 , my mother thinks was in the city of Gdansk . He did not want to lose his Polish nationality.

It came to Brazil with 17 years (but my mother has no say in that year was, does not know if he came here with 17 years or if the left Poland with 17 years, thought it would be between 1921 to 1923) for the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (but do not know, which city he left, if it came directly to the Rio de Janeiro or if landed at another port and came to Rio de Janeiro), and Rio served as master-of-works. Marriage with my grandmother Hertha Klein (Austrian), and had two children Mario Malecha and Monica Malecha (my mother).

His parents were called Ignacy Malecha and Cecylia Malecha, and he had 10 more brothers. So I have a lot of relatives in Poland . But I tried to look at sites for genealogy, and others, and not find anything.

He returned to visit Poland in the year 1966, my mother thinks that was an aircraft cargo or cargo ship. It was about 3 months. I do a query on the Consulate of Poland in Rio de Janeiro , to see if they find some documentation, but they have not answered me.

These information that I have, if you can help me on something, find relatives, sites that can help me, in fact anything.

Since already grateful.
Sincerely,

Victor Malecha

Their son, Julius George von Manteuffel, was born in Kwidzyn, so that's all I have to go on to try to locate where the family originated, or what Amelia's maiden name might have been.

Fredericka Feltz and her son, Herman, appear to have come to the same area of Canada at around the same time, so I'm wondering whether they were from the same area of Germany.

Obviously, I don't know much... am just throwing this out there in hope someone who does know something will find it! <grin>

--Kristi

History of Danzig, late 1600's/early 1700's.

I hope this message helps me locate someone who is knowledgeable about [genealogical] Danzig history in the late 1600's/early 1700's.

My ancestor, Joh. Ch. Demianewitz/Temianowitz, was born about 1683, reputedly in the Danzig area. Oral family history (from an otherwise dotty grandmother who was remarkably accurate about other family "events") says that he was from a wealthy family/nobility that was forced to flee Danzig (I'm guessing about 1700 or slightly later) due to a widespread "peasant uprising"...he went to Schleswig-Holstein, and ended up a pauper. Does this make even the slightest bit of sense from an historical context? [i.e., was this sort of unrest going on during that time period?] Or is it absurd on its face?

Secondarily, does something like a "city directory" or "Bürgerbuch" exist for this time frame?

Thnx.

Roraff Family from Wejhorowo Pomorskie

Joseph Jacob Roraff was born Nov. 27, 1865 Seelau, near Neustadt, Danzig, W. Prussia. With the name changes we believe this to be Wejherowo, Pomorskie, Poland. Joseph immigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1891, followed by his parents August & Anna (Bianga) Roraff, siblings, Paulina, Stella, August and Anna & her husband John Koberinski. We believe Joseph's future wife Mathilda Baranowski accompanied this group. Joseph married Mathilda in Prince Albert, Sask. on Feb. 13, 1893. Other marriages in Prince Albert were Paulina Roraff to George Lukasiewicz 1895 & Stella (Anastacia) Roraff to Joseph Kusch 1893.
Joseph's father August Roraff was born July 7, 1829 at Selan, Neustaeder County on Sinbus to Joseph Roraf & Marianna Santhin and was baptized July 12, 1829.
August, Anna & August Jr. Roraff along with Paulina & George Lukasiewicz, Stella & Joseph Kusch immirgrated to Chicago, Illinois where August had a daughter from a previous marriage to Augustyna Kunz. This daughter, Mathilda was married to August Shemroske about 1881 in Chicago.

Does anyone recognize any of these names and have some information to exchange with me?
debhamilton@sk.sympatico.ca
Julius had 6 brother, including a set of twins (don't know if they are identical or fraternal) & one sister who died young & as far as i know, none of them left. as of 1934, there were were several of his brothers still alive, but the family lost touch after Julius' death in 1935.

how do i even begin to research this? anyone have a clue, because i am stumped.

~~~ laura
Different Czirr spellings
I have hit a "brick wall" with my family lines in what was once Prussia. It appears that CZIRR, DAMASKE, RUPPEL, and GERMER all came from that region but I have a difficult time finding resources to search in to document my family.
So, can anyone tell me if CZIRR is an Americanized version of something else? Are there other spellings for this name which would be more common? My gggggrandfather is Heinrich Czirr b. 1 Apr 1822 and married Henrietta Krause Abt 1848. Heinrich had my ggggrandfather, Herman Ludwig in 1851, in Schojow, Stolp, Pomerania, Prussia (now called Schonau, Slupsk, Pommern or Pomorskie, Preussen) (sorry about my horrible spelling as I don't know German or Polish). What resources are available to me during that period? And where do I find them? (Most of my lines stop once they emigrated to America--I can't find them in Europe.)
Thanks for your help in advance. (I'm happy to share the info for the rest of my above-mentioned lines if they are names of interest to anyone. Email me if interested.)
Sincerely,
Karl Czirr
Von Froede, or Frede, or Froude family in Pomerania
My Great-Great Grandfather apparently originated in Pomerania, one Charles Frede. Family oral tradition has it that he was the second son of the Baron von Froede who got himself into some political trouble, circa 1857, while at Heidelberg University and was apparently banished by Papa Herman. We have found records of him beginning in the US census of 1860, as well as death records while he was serving in the Union Army, but we've been unable to locate any record of his immigration to the US, nor have we been able to establish any links back to Herman. Can't even find Herman for that matter. If he was in political trouble, he may have travelled under an assumed name and then dropped the "o" to disguise himself in America. Are there any Froede families or are there any records of a Junker family with that name in the area? Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated and I would certainly look forward to meeting any possible relations from the area.
Feb 20, 2845.
On web-site showing fallen soldiers from Isinger and
Pyrita area, there is a Franz Schunemann listed, died
2/8/1916. Then under Warsin, there is Wilhelm Oelke,
d. 2/2/1915. My G.Grandfather was Wilhelm Oehlke,
who married Regina.
Would appreciate any help on the Schuenemanns.
Thanks,
Nelda Thompson
Texas
They seem to be in Poland today but in late 1700's early 1800's they must have been considered Germany. Does anyone know the area I am referring to? I am doing Hartmann and Hasse surnames.
Jacob John Samletzki from Marienburg, W. Prussia, now Marbork, Poland
We know little about our Jacob/John Samletkzi line beyond that he had at least three daughters born in Marienburg, West Prussia: Justine, Maria and Anna. The wife of John Samletzki might be Katherine Dokniski, as it was found in a marriage record of their daughter Maria.
Justine Juliana Samletzi married:
August Adolph Neumann, b. March 18, 1848; married Justina Juliana Samletzki (b. February 27, 1854) in Marienburg, West Prussia on April 25, 1874; father of the bride was John (Jacob) Samletzki.....He was also a member of the Prussia Guard. Their first child: Christine was b. April 8, 1877, in Marienburg
Maria Samletzki married:
Herman Frederick Neumann, b. December 16, 1855, married Mary (Maria) Samletzki (b. July 29, 1929), at Bear Creek, near DeWitt, in Gage County, Nebraska, USA, on April 18, 1881
Anna Samletzki married:
John L. Yockel, (b.July 25, 1849) married Anna Maria Samletzki, (September 19, 1851) on 15 July 1878, Gage, Nebraska, USA
We found a few varitions in the last name of Samletzki, however, in the records we have found, the spelling found most was Samletzki. These are the variations: Lamletsky, Sametski, Semeske, Samletzi, Zimmletzisky. We do not know if the Samletzki line orginates in Marienburg or not, only that three of John Samletzki's daughters were born there.
We are also researching the Adolph Otto Neumann line, also from Marienburg.
April 15, 1853, married Amelia W (maiden name unknown), b. 1867, in Gage County, Nebraska, USA, about 1893 in Gage County, Nebraska, USA....
Herman Frederick Neumann, b. December 16, 1855, married Justina's sister Mary (Maria) Samletzki (b. July 29, 1929), at Bear Creek, near DeWitt, in Gage County, Nebraska, USA, on April 18, 1881
We would appreciate help in filling in the history of these Neumann brothers from Marienburg, West Prussia, Germany, which is now Malbork, Poland.
Oswiecie Gdansk
I am trying to locate the whereabouts of Oswiecie the birthplace of a Michael KOSTYRKA, (born 1922). I believe it must be somewhere near Gdansk as he sometimes gives his place of birth as Oswiecie, Poland; and others as Oswiecie Danzig/Danzig Free City.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
