Przemysl is also a town with a train station. We took the train from Krakow toward Przeworsk (?my spelling) and got off at Przemsyl. They must have a church there, but I do not know the name. Woj. Podkarpackie means underneath the Carpathians. Hope this helps a bit.

Hello,

I don't know if this is the place or not, but I am having a very hard time tracing back my family. I am from America, and paid for ancestry.com for several months, with no success. I know my great grandfather's name was Jan Podkolicki, and was changed to John Politsky when he came here to America in the early 1900's. I saw his immigration papers, and they said he came from Sulina, Poland. Solina is the closest city name, and the province of Podkarpackie sounds similar to Podkolicki. If you could provide me with any help, or information I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi: In the meantime found that woj Podkarpackie means
underneath the Carpathian Mountains. It is an area -
and I put it in the category of a county but don't know if that
is what it actually is. It is near the Ukraine, and one city
in that area is Sieniawa. We were there 2 times since we
wrote the message. The San or Sen river runs along one

Sorry your having so much trouble with your subscription to Ancestry. Unfortunatley as you are no doubt becoming aware, geneaolgy is not an exact science. In fact you have to be something of a detective.

For example, searching on "Sulina" I find it is a city in Romania as well as a proper first name for some people. You are probably on the right track though of varying the spelling since transcription during preparation of immigration papers was rarely accurate.

I thank you for trying to help me solve this puzzle... I am sure that I am not Romanian. I found a copy of my great grandfather's declaration of intention to America, and here is what it says:

Name: Jan Podkolicki
Race : Polish Nationality: Polish
Born in: Sulina, Poland on February 17, 1885

Wife: Julia Klym
Born: Baklouci, Poland

I may have found a possible solution to this problem. I found information from the census of 1920 here in America, and it states:

Birthplace: Galicia/ Galizien
Halychyna, Poland

I found that this territory is now in the Ukraine, so this may help... If you have any other suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Sorry I didn't think of looking further afield. Now that you have reviewed the additional census info you can see how it feeds back to the earlier info.

One thing you may want to continue to check is the relevant PolandGenWeb and EastEuropeGenWeb sections since many of us actually try and put some historical context (old province maps, etc.)
