Oppeln/Opole to Chicago - Ziegert, Hoff, Winterstein

I've isolated relatives as being from Oppeln/Opole in the 1880s. Louis Ziegert and Carolina Winterstein emigrated to Chicago in 1884 with some of their daughters (Emma, Amelia, Ida, and Anna) while other daughters arrived earlier in the 1880s (Constance and Augusta). This trip was supposed paid for by some cousins - the Hoffs (Constance marries Joseph in Chicago). I can find most of them in Chicago, along with a passenger list, but nothing else from their time in Europe. Are there records available or transcribed for the region that might help?

I am Stephen Bialek's grand daughter (one of Joseph and Mary's children). His son, my father, Mike, has a family tree up at myheritage.com. He has traced the Bialeks back to George and Anna Bialek (Kaznacha). Mary Kusik's parents were Jacob and Agnes (Jolach). We THINK they were from Galacia. Jacob's father was Walter Kusik. From there we do not know!

Antonia PIETRAS b. 9-1-1898 Koza, Poland

I am searching for further information about my great grandfather Szymon Pietras and his spouse Antonia Pietras, maiden name unknown. Szymon was born on April 13, 1894 in Wojcin, Poland and Antonia was born on January 9, 1898 in Koza, Poland. They had four children; Antoni, Sylvester, Julianna, and Peter (my grandfather). Peter Pietras was born on May 22, 1925 in Koza and went on to marry Genevieve Dlubala, who was born in Rouvroy, France (although both of her parents were from Poland). I believe they came to the United States with their son, my dad, Henry Wladyslaw Pietras in 1965. I would like to know more about Szymon, Antonia, Peter, Genevieve, and any of their ancestors as well as where they came from. Any information regarding any of the above would be greatly appreciated.
Researching: PIETRAS, DLUBALA
Genifer Pietras
(University of Connecticut- Storrs)
Hello...
Little new at the genealogy but in working through my family history I've run across my 4th great grandmother whose name was Suzanna Woychik. She was born in 1804 in Popielow, Poland. I have to guess she maybe of some relation.

She married Joseph Pieterick and they emmigrated to the United States and settled in Independence. Well I know he did but not sure about Suzanna. I do have the Pieterick line forward but nothing on Suzanna.

I think the confusion may come in because that part of Schlesien (and maybe more) was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire before WWI and the people there considered themselves to be Austrian. I know my g-grandfather always said he was Austrian but he also said he was from Schlesien so who knows? It's a pain that these names and boundaries keep changing.

Almost all of my relatives lived within a few kilometer radius of their village. The occasional outsider would come in but there was a lot of intermarrying. They referred to people by their last name and house number when there were too many people with the same last name. Few of them emigrated until after the war and it was a small place so it's making it difficult to track them down.

Thank you for all of your help.

Thank you for the information. I have relatives born in Austrian Schlesien, one of them being born in Wildschutz, Freiwaldau, Osterreichisch Schlesien, Austria. In the first part of the 20th century they referred to this place either as being in Austria or as being in Schlesien. It seemed to be equivalent to them.

I am obtaining the LDS films (there are quite a few). When the Poles entered this area after the war they burned and destroyed anything German unless it was Catholic. Many villages have no records left. It's my understanding that Patschkau's Catholic records may still be intact and were moved but I've not been able to verify this. If anyone knows where/if the records were moved please let me know.

All of the headstones were destroyed, I have only a couple of pictures of headstones. When they were expelled the Germans were only able to take what they could carry and most of them had little children to carry so we have only a small amount of paperwork from their homes that hadn't been burned or destroyed. I visited the area last year but there is nothing left for genealogy purposes.

I was hoping that someone had family members from the area that were connected to my family and we could piece together some part of the family tree.

Thank you again for the information!
From 1945 until his death in 1976, Hugo (or Hugon) Oswald Pudell was a pastor at this church. He and his wife Erna (nee Bartke) are buried in the church cemetery. They had 3 children, whose names and ages I don't know. Hugo Pudell was born in Belchatow, Lodzkie, in 1905. His wife lived from 1918-2008 and may have remarried.

Can anyone tell me how I might find out the particulars of his life (he is mentioned in a book about Lutheran pastors in Poland but it's very brief) and perhaps what became of his children? Would I need to contact his former church in Pokój?

Thank you.

Your post is so old now that you may no longer be interested in what is perhaps just a strange coincidence.

I was born and grew up in Minneapolis the daughter of Charles Reichel born in Delano, Minnesota in 1884. His father Thomas was from Germany/Poland having immigrated in about 1870. Thomas Reichel was married to Julia Langosh (Longash?) also of German/Polish extraction. My information about them is very sketchy. They had nine children of whom one was named Julia. I, born in 1938, did not know my grandparents and so never asked them about their origins.

If you are interested in communicating, please be sure that I would be very pleased to hear from you.

I know its been years, but i was going over my plutz family line that my grandmother had put together and found that the names Peter Plutz and Elizabeth Fritchell Plutz appear on the marriage certificate of Joseph Plutz and Barbara Siedel, which their descendants had in thier possession.
The book German Immigrants: Lists of Passengers Bound from Bremen to New York, 1868-1871, with Places of Origin (Vol 4 Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co, 1993, by Marion Wolfert) lists Johann Plutz, age 32, Barbara Plutz, Age 32, Margaretha Plutz, age 21, Elisabeth Plutz, age 3 and Johann Plutz age 1 in the passenger list for the sailing ship Hansa which arrived in New York on 6 July 1868. Joseph arrived in wisconsin in 1892.

Dont know if any of this helps.

I am seeing they came out of several villages in Opole Province such as Falkowice (Pol. sp.), Dammratsch (Ger. sp), and Poppelau (Popielow). This is very complicated area to research. Do you have a Phillip Maciej born about 1831? He farmed in Poppelau (Popielow), but was not born there. Thank you.

Re: JELEN

My p. g-grandmother, Marianna Jelen was born (I believe) in Janiszowa, Poland ~1868. I've found two Janiszowa's relatively close, one just due west of Opole Lubelskie. The second is also close by (just south of there). Marianna's father was Josephi Jelen (b. ~1843, if you count 25 years as a generation); her mother was Marianna Szkaradek.

Marianna was married to Adalbertus Janik (who was born in Gierowa, Malopolskie, Poland) and they lived in Roznów, Malopolskie, Poland. After the death of my g-grandfather, Marianna married Joannes Hajduk, likely around 1901.

...just as a sidelight...the family tree my brother started ~1991 listed Marianna's birthplace as 'Germany' (although he can't tell me why at this point). The area you're looking at was in the German-administered area of Poland (or Germany, itself) prior to 1945. Remember that I'm guessing which Janiszowa she was born it...there are likely many of them.

That's all I have on Marianna Jelen. The Jelen branch is pretty much a brick wall for the time being, although some progress has been made recently.

Let me know if this fits in in any way. My family tree should be viewable ['Janik - Moose (Apr 2011)']. That tree will be deleted shortly, however, and I'll be replacing it with an updated version (just waiting for my FTM 2012 software to arrive).

Their daughter Catharine (1849-1945) was married to Joseph Pogrzeba (1849-1921), also from Poland. Joseph and Catherine immigrated to Independence, Trempealeau Co, Wisconsin in 1883 with 4 or 5 children and then had 5 more. Also, I think Joseph was married once before.
Mary Pyka m. John Moran on June 19, 1907. What I have on Frances Albins b. 9/18/1872 of course in Bandera, Tx she married Joseph Knapick (I have a k on the end of Knapick, but it could be a typo or later added or it maybe shouldn't be there.)You might write ElaineMStephens@aol.com ... She has done a more extensive search.

I am sure we are cousins...I see that John Pyka Sr. b. 1818 m. Frances Jasckowitz b. 1821 had 6 children. One being Constantina Pyka m. John Adamietz m. 5/10/1866 had 7 boys and 4 girls. Your branch of the tree went one way and ours went another. John Pyka m. Josephine Knapick were my g-grandparents...John Valentine Pyka and Monica Mazurek were my grandparents and my mom was Lucille Monica Pyka who married Richard Rollen Turner. I had a great Aunt on the Turner side but my dad was an only child. So there wouldn't be a connection there. But what a coincidence on the Turner name. Good Luck.

Elaine has been to Poland a couple of times plus has hosted some of the families over here. If you have not already contacted her, I would do so....she has ton of things she might share with you.

Carolyn, I just discovered Ida Brown and Stella Robinson buried at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Bandera, and both of them and their husbands in the local 1930 census. I just found a posting for Mary Pyka Moran and her husband and wrote to that site, and hoping for a reply soon. Besides Lucy, I'm really stuck on Frances, later in 1953 referred to as Frances Knapic. Contact me LSmith050804 at AOL and I'll share with you when I get info on Mary Moran. Also see the famiy on FindAGrave.com for St. Stanislaus.

Hi Carolyn: I'm trying to find more info on Lucy Pyka b. 20 Jul 1886 Bandera who may have married Gollihar or Gallihar.

This Lucy Pyka is the daughter of John Pyka and Josepha KNAPPICK married 06 Jun 1871. That John Pyka b. abt 1848 is son of Johann Pyka abt 1821 and Frances Jaskowitz. John's brother brother Anton b. 1824 came to Bandera Texas also.

Lucy is in the picture of the Pyka Family when they celebrated her father's birthday in 1927--it's often published in Bandera history books.

Her bros/Sis: Albina (?Franklin?), Miss Annie, Frances/Fannie (Knapic), Mary Josephine (Moran) Alex, John Valentine, Pete, Ida (Brown)and Stella ( Robinson)

Appreciate any help you can furnish.

PS: Hundreds of 1850's Polish immigrant families are profiled in Silesian Profiles, Vol I and II.
