Patrick,
I know it's a long, long time since you posted this but did you get any replies? I have just visited Opole cemetery and there is now no longer and evidence of the graves of 30 British soldiers who remain in Opole cemetery. I have quite a bit of info on THOMAS Charles S Farrier/Cpl 536331 14th Hussars, (previously 47511) attested 25 April 1905 age 20 yrs 10 mths at Brighton. He was a railway labourer when he enlisted. He commited suicide while temporarily insane in Lublintz 6 May 1922 and is buried in the civilian cemetery in Oppeln where he remains until this day.
He married Sarah Shelton in Colchester on 5 April, 1919 (PRO Colchester 2/1919 4a 1809) and they had a daughter, Joyce Evelyn who was born 1st November 1920 in Tidworth.
He served in India 5 May 1906 to 11 Aug 1914 and 22 Feb 1917 until 11 Aug 1917.
He was also in Mesopatamia from 21 Feb 1916 to 21 Dec 1917 and 12 Aug 1917 until 29 Mar 1919
His regiment became part of the BAOR 2nd Dec 1920. In 1921 the 14th Hussars were sent to Upper Silesia where Charles served until his death on 6th May 1922.
Charles’s daughter, Joyce Evelyn married Albert S Robinson in Colchester in 1939 (PRO Colchester, Apr/Jun 4a 2511) and she died in Colchester (PRO Jan/Mar 1998, 234)
and Farrier/Staff Sergeant Harry Smith was the eldest son of Mr James Smith of Smeathorp, Devon.
Born in December 1885 (PRO Jan/Mar 1886 Tavistock, Devon 5b 371). He joined the 14th Hussars, enlisting in Honiton in Devon, 13 November 1905, and after a period of training in Shorncliffe Camp near Cheriton in Kent, he was drafted to India where he spent 9 years.
Returning on leave, he married Harriet Gladman on 5 August 1914, in Taunton, Somerset (PRO Taunton Jul/Sep 1914 5c 531). Harriet was born 30 November 1884 in Colyton, Devon and was baptised there 17 July 1885.
On the day of his wedding, he was suddenly recalled to duty to mobilise for war. His unit was sent to Mesopotamia.
He had 3 children with Harriet:
George Hope Smith, born 6 March 1909 (possibly adopted by Harry & Harriet) in Axminster (PRO Axminster Apr/Jun 1909 5b 11 (birth registered as George Hope Gladman, and is shown as living with aged aunts in Colyton on the 1911 census).
Catherine Nellie Smith, born 29 July 1915 in Colchester (PRO Colchester Jul/Sep 1915 4a 1413)
Harry Gladman Smith, born 3 June 1920 in Tidworth (PRO Andover Apr/Jun 1920 2c 518)
On 2 December 1920 his unit was transferred to the British Army on the Rhine, and from there we went on to serve in Upper Silesia in 1921. After a short illness, he died of pneumonia on 2 December 1921 in the base hospital at Oppeln (now Opole). He was buried in the British Section of the Civilian cemetery in Oppeln where he remains until this day. I have a photo of the cemetery taken in 1930 and also some taken in April this year. I also have a photo of the 14th Hussars parading in Oppeln/Opole in 1921. You can contact me by PM or jepowrie(at)gmail.com Regards, Jim Powrie
