I recently was looking over some records from Jaslo that are on this site: http://www.genealogiapolska.pl/index.php?option=com_content&...

Anyways I found a few CHMURAs I am looking for. But not many. I did see a surname that was striking me as a possible AKA.

I am trying to find records for Malec, Poland. I have found a marriage record in Suchy Grunt and a passenger ship record that mention it and there is a Malec near Suchy Grunt on a Google map. There is, however, another Malec that shows up further to the west. How can I tell which one I need and where might I find records? I've searched the LDS Library records for Malec, but the closest they have listed is Malecz (Prużana). I don't know if this is the same as Malec and if it is, which one?

I later learned from the priest of the Chocholow, Poland parish, that Ciche was in that parish,(but he couldn't find any records on John.) More recently I'm learning from others who also have FUDALA ancestors in"Galicia" area of Poland, that they came from the Nowy Targ, which has merged w/Nowy Sac~z area.I'm confused. On John's marriage record he lists his parent: Josef FUDALA & Teresa OLSZEWSKA, from Galicia, Poland. I know that Apolonia and Ignacy Sowizrol were a brother and sister who came from the area to Chicago in the early 1900s. He was born in 1890 and she in 1887. They may have had a brother named Walter who also came to the U.S. I think they may be the only Sowizrol family in the U.S. I just got the death certificate for Ignacy (Ignatius) and it says he was from Szerzyny but his parents' names are unknown. I doubt if I'll find anything, but if anyone else is looking into Sowizrols, let me know.

My Great Grandmother was born Marianna Wikrzowska, approximately 1875 in Gorlice. The name also appeared as Wicher on a Polish document that I received. Her mother was named Agatha. Marianna later went on to marry Jan Mysliwy in Poland sometime after 1895. If anyone has any information about the Wikrsowska family I would appreciate it.

I would like to know if Martin had more children maybe by the church records of Baptizsom ? Martin and a son were maybe to have come over on work visas. Any info will help

DROZDOWICZ, KRZYSIAK, FIGLEWICZ, WASHORVA, KORBAS, JEZ families from Dobczyce

I'm looking to connect with/exchange information, etc. with other family members. Several of our family members came to US (mostly Chicago) from Dobczyce and others stayed or returned at times to visit. The family names were primarily Drozdowicz, Krzysiak, and Figlewicz from Dobczyce and Wawrzynowicz from Wolyn/Volyn. My great-grandmother's last name was either Washorva or Hashorva (very hard to read the Ellis Island info to tell). We are also connected to the Korbas, Jez and Kowalski families from Dobczyce.

I'm very curious to get further genealogical family information prior to 1910 as well (for instance, the Church information from Dobczyce).

If you are one of my family members or know of my family members - current or past - I would love to hear from you!

Thank you!
Jeanette

Several of my ancestors are listed as farmers and "sculteti, scultetus". I can't find a translation in any on-line translator. Does anyone know what that occupation is? It is probably unique to the locale.

My grandfather, Kondrat (Conrad) Garbera was born in 1875 in Mochnaczka Nizna, Nowy Sacz, Galicia. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time. His oldest daughter, born in the US, left a family note that her father had served in the "German" Army before emigrating to the US in 1906. Does anyone know which Army he would have been required to serve? It doesn't seem like "German" would be correct. Does anyone know how to find these records? The record of his parent's marriage states that his father was a soldier on leave when they married. What Army would that be?

Polish Pronunciation Help

My Great Aunt, Mary Witaszek, made a trip to Poland in 1923. She is listed as the 7th entry on both pages of the manifest listed below. (click to enlarge) Mary's maiden name was Pepek. Her mother was Anna and it looks like the last name listed for Anna is Bembkowa. I'm not sure if the mother remarried or if there is some Polish phonetic similarity between Pepek and Bembkowa. Also, I have posted this before, but the birth city of Mary (2nd page) is listed as Kemper Stuczenska; I thought this might be Kepa Szcucinska but cannot find a city by that name. Any help appreciated! Cheryl

Searching my family roots in Sekowa, Poland. My great grandfather Joseph Guter came from Sekowa to the US in 1899. He was 17 years old. He lived in Methuen, Massachusetts from 1930 (or earlier) until his death in 1964. At some point before 1930 he had changed his name to Goterch. I'm trying to figure out how to locate the records on the name change.

I have reason to believe that the Guter surname was of Jewish origin. Does anyone know how I can find this out? Our family was raised Catholic, so this information was unusual for me to come across. It is important to me to know my family history. Apparently, it could be richer than I'd ever thought.

Julie

Ethnicity as Austrian (? Polish); Date of arrival- February 18, 1905; Age on arrival- 27; Ship of travel- Graf Waldersee; Port of departure- Hamburg, Germany. It seems most likely that the Naleszynsky / Nalezynski surname spellings were listed for Stefan on different records.

Names on Memorial in front of Krakow Jewish Museum, Kazimierz

I currently live in Krakow, Poland and was in the Kazimierz area (on Szeroka Street) today. I took a photo of a granite memorial stone, outside a former synagogue on Szeroka Street and thought the names might be of interest to people here.

This former synagogue, at 24 Szeroka Street, is called The Old Synagogue; it's a branch of the Krakow Historical Museum now, but part of the building lived its life post-war as a series of Polish shops.

The stone is an uncarved, blank cube of granite, with no plaque upon it or its pedestal/base. But when I looked closer at one side, what I thought was an advertisement someone carelessly slapped on it, turned out be a listing of what looked like Polish-Jewish names and at the bottom, handwritten, it had the year 1943.

It was a laminated piece of paper, with masking tape in the corners, with the following names on it:

Tadeusz Aniol-Zagorski
Francisek Baraniuk-Frantuk
Adam Doroszczak
Emil Dziedzic
Feliks Gajewski
Jozef Gaweda
Piotr Grudzicki
Tadeusz Homa
Arkadiusz Jagus
Feliks Jener
Henrik Jurkiewicz
Stanislaw Kaczynski
Mieczyslaw Kossek
Jozef Kawczyk
Wladyslaw Futak Gukanski
Stanislaw Miedzik
Roman Pasternak
Zdzslaw Pasternak
Franciszik Potnadlo
Mieczyslaw Sroka
Wincenty Struminski
Eugeniusz Stus
Wladyslaw Szczurek
Miesczyslaw Szucki
Jozef Scislo
Zdzislaw Tadka
Wadyslaw Toluczek
Jozef Wciera
Zbiginew Wojakowski
Roman Zaremba

At the top a heading said:

Polegli za Ojczyzne

I do not speak Polish, am not Jewish and have only just arrived here to live. I cannot translate the words and could not ask (the museum was closed when I was there today). I hope I have typed the names properly. I thought the list might be helpful to someone searching for their Polish or Jewish roots.

I will try and find a place to post the photo, possibly at Flikr, blown up so that all can read the names.

Szeroka street in Kazimierz was originally the center of Jewish life in Krakow and is where, before the Jews of Krakow were taken to the Podgorze Ghetto further away during the 1939-1945 war, many lived and worked and prayed for centuries. This is where Schindler's list was filmed (even though the actual WWII Jewish ghetto eventually ended up across the river in Podgorze).

Gibala, Stryszowski, Surowka - Village of Janowice

I am searching for information on the village of Janowice reportedly near the town of Wieliczka. I have a baptismal certificate of my great granfather who was born in the region in 1878 that references this village. I have been able to locate other "towns" called Janowice in other provinces but none in this area. The nearest village of this name that I have been able to locate is north east of Krakow and close enough to other cities that the certificate would not note Wieliczka (my assumption). Any help or direction (old map sites...) would be appreciated.

hello together,
i`m searching in austria and one person brings me to galicia.
i have a birth entry where the mother of the new born child is mentioned as Spillauer Barbara, she was from ..... and there is the problem.
i`m quiete sure to read riglitz (=ryglice in german), but this seems to be a kind of a district, because before riglitz is standing g**tzau (???). but can also be g***** ? this seems to be the village where she was really born. has anyone a clue what german spelled village this can be? is there somewhere a list of translation austrian galicien villages - now polish names? is there somewhere a list what villages belonged to ryglice? which villages were nearby? i already searched in the birth records/microfilms of ryglice, but havn`t found the birth entry.

the person is:
Barbara Spillauer * 10/10/1873
parents: Albert Spillauer and Barbara Wögerbauer

thank you very much in advance for any help!

STACHOWNA family - Dobczyce church records?

Am looking for information on the Stachowna family in Dobczyce or nearby. My great grandmother, Anna Drozdowicz (b. about 1867) listed a sister by the name of "Teresa Stachowna" in Dobcyzce and I am trying to figure out if that is my great grandmother's maiden name or not.

There was also another woman named Franciszka Drozdowicz (married name) who was born about 1882 who also lists a Teresa Stahowna as her sister. (I think the spelling was wrong as I believe it was probably Stachowna as well.)

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated!

Also, if any one can give me the name and address of the Catholic Church in Dobczyce that might have records from the 1800s and 1900s, please let me know!!

Thanks!

He had 2 brothers - Peter and Ignatz, and one sister named Rosaria.
Rosaria married a man named Smola and they stayed in Poland.
Joseph, Peter and Ignatz all came to the United States before 1915.
Breszcze Church records

I am not sure which parish my family may have been a member of prior to coming to the USA (Buffalo NY). The LDS seem to have mainly Army records from what I could tell. But I did find a reference to St Martin and I did receive a picture from a "distint cousin" related to the Frank SZAL~ASNY (b 4 Jan 1895 to Joseph SZALASNY & Marya) family that settled in Lancaster NY near Buffalo NY. Unfortunately, I lost his address... Is St Martin the parish that I should contact? If so what would there address be. To recap my great-grandparents were Marcin SZALASNY and Agnes CHICHA. I am looking for any information or family that may have stayed in Poland or returned to Poland after coming to the USA. Marcin's children were: Walenty (born in February either in 1867 (from ellis island records) or 1878(from 1900 Buffalo NY census); Anna (b Mar 1868)married to Franciszek JANIK (b 1867 Andrychowie) not sure if married in Poland or after arriving in the USA;Jozef (b May 1870)married Anna BUCZKA in Poland, they had two children also born in Poland, Jan (b 15 May 1888) and Mary (b about 1889); Wojciech (b 17 Jan 1872); Ignacy, my grandfather, (b Mar 1873); and Maryanna (born 15 Mar 1878) married to Wojciech BZIBZIAK.

I had been given the following information for Marcin SZAL~ASNY (b 14 Oct 1855 d 27 Mar 1927) to Jozef SZALASNY & Maria CHOWANIEC. That would have made Marcin 12 or 13 years old when his first child, either Walenty or Anna was born... Not that it is impossible but that is kind of young... So this is raising another question to me is Marcin a brother of Frank SZALASNY?

Then there was Jan SZALASNY (b May 1865) in the 1900 Wilkes-Barre PA USA Census.

I believe my grandfather, Jozef Ludwik, was from the village of Koniowka. His father was John Ludwik and his mother was Konegunda Leja. He came to the US in the early 1900's and married Alexandra Szczurek at Sacred Heart Church in Chicago, IL. Alexandra was from Chocholow in the Zakopany area of Poland. Her father was George Szczurek and her mother was Anna Wierczorek. Jozef and Alexandra moved to Lilly, PA in 1917 and returned to Chicago around 1922. They resided at 2001 W 18th St for many years. Any info regarding these families would be appreciated.
