You're welcome Jane.

I don't believe it is a variation but a transcribing error. It sure not easy to pronounce the way you have it.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~polwgw/namelist.html
http://polandpoland.com/common_polish_names.html

Fechner - Pietrakow families

I am searching for any records associated with Leon Pietrakow and Aoelia Fechner, parents of Marie Sophia (b. 1870) and Helena (b.1879). There were other siblings but names are unknown. Potentially Aoelia was evangelical lutheran and Leon was russian orthodox. I've seen Fechner also spelled at Fetchner and Pietrakow derivations as Petrokow, Petrakoff. petroskov. Family records reference Konin and Lodz as places of original. Marie immigrated to USA abt. 1893 and Helena arrived 1899. A distant family member was William Walter Elsner (b.1874), parents are Joseph Elsner and Mary Krell from Kroll(?). Any direction is appreciated.
thank you -Jane

Dear friends, our family are looking for Lena (Linik before marriage) Borowik (born 1911 in Vilnius), her daughter Basia Borowik (born near 1935 in Vilnius). Lena and Basia Borowik moved to Lodz in 1946 with Mozshe Katz and his sister from Lodz. Maybe Lena became a wife of Katz. They lived on street Gdanska. And lost. Please help! I am a member of the family of Frida Geyzeriker. Lena Borowik is Frida's aunt.

Boginia still exists - just input that spelling into Google Maps and it will come up. It would have been in the Brzeziny (note slight difference in spelling) district and Lutheran Parish. However, there was no Lutheran church in that region at that time so they would have been obligated to register at the nearest Catholic Church. A previous place of origin would probably be noted in either a death or marriage record from that location.

My 1803 map of the region shows the nearest church at Skoszewy but the actual records could be a Strykow.

Jerry
Jerry, you are absolutely right, no reason to look for a
different spelling, having said that we would have been at
the end of the search, had we not found a cousin with an
alternate spelling. We had success looking at the census
records in the Lodz archives, and found the links from
Fischer, Fisiak, back to Fischer in Vienna.

Lee

It is certainly possible that the spelling changed but there is no need to assume that when the records confirm Fischer as the spelling.

In Poland, records civil or church are in Polish until 1867 and in Cyrillic after that. Some pre 1820 Lutheran records might be in German. All Lutheran records from 1800 through just after 1890 in Volhynia are in German.

Jerry

The names were changed (no idea what year) FISCHER, could
be ......fisiak........fiszer.........and any number of
spellings that are phonetically correct.

Our branch stems from Vienna early 1800's and is an issue
between German/Lutheran.....German/RC........or Jewish.

To get more information you would need someone who reads and
writes Polish, as well as Syrillic (Sp??)
Try to say [woo] (like woo-d, woo-dy, woo-l) with very soft J (like J-esus, Ji-ngle) at the end. Something like WooJ - it will be closest spell of Lodz.

I am searching for further information about my great grandfather Szymon Pietras and his spouse Antonia Pietras, maiden name unknown. Szymon was born on April 13, 1894 in Wojcin, Poland and Antonia was born on January 9, 1898 in Koza, Poland. They had four children; Antoni, Sylvester, Julianna, and Peter (my grandfather). Peter Pietras was born on May 22, 1925 in Koza and went on to marry Genevieve Dlubala, who was born in Rouvroy, France (although both of her parents were from Poland). I believe they came to the United States with their son, my dad, Henry Wladyslaw Pietras in 1965. I would like to know more about Szymon, Antonia, Peter, Genevieve, and any of their ancestors as well as where they came from. Any information regarding any of the above would be greatly appreciated.
Researching: PIETRAS, DLUBALA
Genifer Pietras
(University of Connecticut- Storrs)
Hi, My mom was born in that village and I still have cousins there. I used to spend my Summer vacations there when I was a little kid. I remember last name Smialek being mentioned by my grandmother and by my aunt. I think that they lived not to far from my family. Village has it's own web page wojcin.pl - it's in Polish :( You can look at the pictures. On that web page you'll find SHOUTBOX where you can post your comments or questions. A lot of Poles do speak English. Who knows ... maybe you'll hear from your Smialek relatives ;) If you have any questions you can e-mail me - ELIZABETH1105@COMCAST.NET - I live in Denver CO now and talk to my cousin in Wojcin often. I'll be glad to get more info for you if you want :)

My grandfather Joseph Wierzbinski immigrated to the US around 1901. He stated he was from (gub) Suwalska and a parish (SP) Scielna. He was born March 15, 1891. He ended up in Chicago in the ninth ward and married Stanislawa Chulska in 1916. He had one brother Casmir.
Does anyone have any information if this Wierzbinski family is from Suwalska? Is there a Catholic Church with baptismal records in this area?

Also I see in some records the word (OPUSTEK) OR (OPUSTER) ?
