I am looking for any availbale resouces and research aids or links to help with my research for my ancestors in the Straszewo Parish. My Great-Grandfather listed Straszewo, Aleksandrow as the area in Poland where he was baptized in 1890. I have ordered the Straszewo Parish baptism records at the local LDS center. Does the LDS contain the only information available for this area of Poland? Also are there any websites that contain the local history? Please help.
Brian
Is there anybody who has some information on the surname of MUSCHIKOWSKI? It is said that Gottfried Muschikowski's father was Russian. Gottfried married Anna Gehrke before 1884. At that time he lived in Zaskocz = Zaskotsch where his daughter Christine was born in 1884. In 1906 he and his family lived in Rheinsberg = Rynsk. Those villages belonged to Kreis (county) Briesen in West Prussia, Germany, now Poland. Christine married my greatgrandmother's brother Arthur Haak, carpenter, * 1885, in Rheinsberg in 1906.
Regards from Germany,
Willi

This was when the towns were in Germany. That area is now part of Poland and I wish to know the names of those towns today. I know only that they are in the District of Chojnice, Province of Bydgoszcz. We wish to learn if there are any descendants of Friederich FRITZ and Marianna WETZEL there or were they moved to other German towns.
Searching for marriage records ca 1878, death records ca. 1877 and ca. 1887 for Klein-Rehwalde (Rywaldzik) Kreis Löbau Westpreußen. Roman Catholic parish was Groß Plowenz (Płowęź) Kreis Strasburg. FHL has generally good coverage for the parish, but there are gaps in the coverage for the records in question. Several authoritative sources (Brandt, Stanke) as well as numerous web sites likewise do not show these records. Presumably the parish registers don’t exist. Possibly the parish was inoperative during this time due to the Kulturkampf; many Catholic churches in Prussia were closed/without a priest. I’ve researched other Catholic parishes in the area, in every increasing circles to no avail. Where would Catholics likely be married during this time if their parish was closed? Can anyone suggest where I might find civil records covering these events?

She married Franciszek Mierzejewski, also born 1860-1870, quite probably from the Wąpielsk area, too. Anna's father is believed to have been Franciszek Milewski [or Mielewski? or Chmielewski?]. My ggf Franciszek's father was named Jozef Mierzejewski. [He probably belonged to an old szlachta drobna farming family; I have his sabre.] Any information on these people or their families will be very deeply appreciated.
Help with Modern Town Names Please!! Levan + Vusawa

Hi guys, looking for help once again. I am good at a lot of things but not figuring out Polish town names. Any ideas would be appreciated.

1) Levan, Poland listed on W.W.II registration card as town of birth. So this is most likely an American / phonetic spelling. Town would be somewhere in the general area of Torun and in the Warsaw District under tthe Russians at turn of century.

2) Vusawa (?), Poland. Also in same area, Warsaw District of Poland. Here is the link to the original Ellis Island Manifest: http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?order_num=164...
Line 7 of Manifest - Passenger Name _ Maryanna Kopczynska.

Again, any help greatly appreciated. Shetlseeker is overwhelming me.

Best,
Anna

Just an alert to additional marriage records not listed by LDS for microfilm #531639, Cekcyn Parish. Microfilm lists Akta urodzen(births)1835-1876 and Akta malzenstw(marriages) 1849-1909. Also on this microfilm are Cekcyn parish marriages 1830-1848. This parish ledger was microfilmed in reverse year order, 1848-1830, and upside down. You will need a computerized film reader in order to turn the frames properly. I just noticed these records at the local LDS library today. This unexpected find greatly enhanced my family research.

Just returned from a visit to Bromberg (Bydgoszcz) and Serock (Schirolzken) on a family history tour. We visited the archives in Bydgoszcz and grave yards in both Serock and Bydgoszcz. We found the old books for Serock in the archives and a number on children we never knew existed. They died as children and then the names were used again. We brought home soil from the homeland to add to our collection of genealogical trips. Could have spent a month looking through those books.

Barbara Kolodziej (my paternal grandmother) immigrated to the US in 1907 (she gave her age as 17 but I know she was born in 1895 making her just 12 yo). On the ship's manifest she indicated she was from Cholemiane (may be Chelmoniec today). She traveled with another girl from Cholemiane and her name is Josefa Chrzaslek (spelling of this last name was hard to read on the manifest). Barbara married Joseph Kurcz in 1913, they had 6 children and she died in 1971 and is buried next to Joseph in St. Johns Cemetary in Bellevue, Nebraska. She lived in South Omaha.

Joseph Kurcz, my paternal grandfather, shows up on the 1920 and 1930 Census in Omaha and lived with Barbara and children at 2920 South 29 Street in South Omaha. Joseph was estranged from the family sometimes in the 1930's. He died in 1956. I can't find him on any Immigration records nor does he show as having ever registered for Social Security.

Any help wouold be appreciated.

Frank Kurtz
913-461-7410
Studzinsky, Kotarski, Wysocki from Wloclawek?

I'm new to Polish genealogy and don't know how to find records there.

Walenty Wysocki of Wloclawek, Poland married Julianna Studzinki. They both died in 1917 (in Warsaw?) in the flu epidemic. They had at least 4 children: Stanislaw, Zygmunt (1891 - 1958, Boston, MA), Janina (1895 - 1969) and Felicia (b. 1900). Zygmunt settled in Salem, MA.
Amelia Studzinski (sister? mother? aunt? of Julianna) married Felix Kotarski. Two of their sons, Alexander and Louis, came to the US and settled around Salem, MA.

Most grateful for any advice on these folks or how to go about finding more info in Poland.

Pankowska Teresa, born in Rypin

Hi,

My grandfather Stefan Pankowski, born in Rypin around 1930 had a sister Teresa, born in Rypin around 1926. They had also three other sisters: Dana (she lived in USA,New York but died in Poland few years ago), Stefa and Urszula. Teresa went away from Poland with a German soldier about 1944 and my family has never heard of her anymore. As I know, my family was looking for her but with no results. My aunt, which died some time ago ones said, she is in Canada or Australia, but no one ever confirmed that. I have a family tree here so you can look there and maybe you'll find any mathes. As I found here on Ancestry.com there were few people with name Pankowski who were living in Rypin and went to USA. But I can't find any informations about them. If you'd have any questions or clues, please write me: mroovka2602@gmail.com. I'll be greatful!!!

Kasper alias Cyranowski Ceranowski Seranowski Cyran

I've been reading over all the above lists and posts. While searching my grandmother's family KASPER/KASPROWICZ in the town of Szubin, I began to see that some of the Kaspers began to use the name Ceranowski (and other spellings) about 1835. In various birth, marriage, death records for Szubin, the name was often listed as "Kasper alias Ceranowski." It took me some time before it became apparent that when some Kasper lines just seemed to disappear, the individual had become Ceranowski (and other spellings)only. I have been able, therefore, to trace an individual through marriage and death by not looking for Kasper, but finding them as Ceranowski.

Ggrandfather was Valentin Kasper, born 20 Jan 1838 in Lachowo polski (near Szubin), d 1919 Camden NJ

Gggrandfather Adelbert Kasprowicz, born 15 Apr 1804 in Lachowo, married Marianna Cieczka 1832, d 1855 in Szubin.

Valentin's (my ggrandfather) siblings are

Joannes (b 1832, d 1836)
Michael (b 1835) married Catherina Grzegorek in 1862
Francisca (b 1840) married to Joannes Malechi in 1861
Michalina (b 1843) married Joannes Maslowski in 1871
Marianna (b 1846, d 1846)
Agnes (b 1848, d 1848)
Martianna (b 1850, married Alexander Oszuscik in 1874)

I would be interested to hear from other Ceranowski or Kasper searchers, especially from the Szubin area to see if we can find a common link.

Additionally, my family, unlike so many others, who settled in the Midwest, settled in the Philadelphia area.

Regards,
Carroll

I just connected two of my family surnames of Andrykowski and Rydzkowski to the Gross Bislaw Parish. I was wondering if anyone has found a detailed site for the history or photos for that town or parish. I found one site with a small church photo. The old Catholic parish church appears to be named Transfiguration Church. I always like to acquire the church history and photos of the church that existed in the time frame of my ancestors. I will be looking at the LDS film shortly to locate church records for my family.

I don't have much more information beyond knowing that Ida had a brother named John. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Edward Erdman came to the US around 1883 to Baltimore. He was previously married and probably divorced or left his wife behind in Poland. Edward and his first wife had a son, Julius, who in turn, had a son Henry Erdman. Julius Erdman and his family stayed in the Baltimore area, Edward went to Cleveland and married Anna Petrowski. Anna came to the US around 1884 with some of her family members.

Edward's father was named Julius, mother possibly Louise, last name unknown. Anna's father's first name was Gottfried/Fred and mother's Eva (last name unknown).

The Erdman's and also the Petrowski lived in an area around Michalki/Rypin. They had friends/relatives by the last name of Fanslau who also came from the same area, reconnected in Cleveland and both families moved to Michigan around 1902.

The names: Erdman, Fanslau, Petrowski, Gogolin are somehow connected by marriage or friendship starting in Russia/Poland. I would like to find those connections.

The families of Erdman and Petrowski knew their relatives went to the US. It is not know if Edward had siblings. Please see my initial query in regard to the names of Anna's siblings.

I am confused about how the names of the parents were entered. Carl's parents appear as Mathias and Michalina SKIBY and Francisca's parents appear as Jacobus and Marianna ECKSTAEDTOWIC.
SCIBA Baptism Records - Szubin

Carl Sciba, his wife Franciszka and 5 children, emigrated to Texas from Szubin, Poland in 1867. Below are the baptism records for the children of Carl Sciba as they appear in the church register. One child died young and did not emigrate. Notice Carl's surname was sometimes recorded as SCIBINSKI instead of SCIBA. These records are written in Latin, so all first names were recorded in their Latin form.

Baptism Records
Catholic Church
Schubin, Bromberg, Posen
[Szubin, Bydgoszcz, Poznan]

Michael
born: 13 Sep 1850 Szubin
bapt: 17 Sep 1850 Szubin
father: Carolus Sciba
mother: Francisca Zwierzynska
godparents:Joannes Andrejewski, Veronica Swierska

Andreas
born: 20 Nov 1852 Szubin
bapt: 28 Nov 1852 Szubin
father: Carolus Scibinski
mother: Francisca Zwierzynska
godparents: Michael Przybylinski, Marianna Duszkowska

Vincentius
born: 17 Jan 1856 Szubin
bapt: 19 Jan 1856 Szubin
father: Carolus Sciba
mother: Francisca Zwierzynska
godparents: Joannes Szatkowski, Antonina ?

Joannes
born: 9 Jun 1859 Szubin (died before 1864)
bapt: 11 Jun 1859 Szubin
father: Carolus Sciba
mother: Francisca Zwierzynska
godparents: Thomas Powezowski, Maria Scibinska

Marianna
born: 1 Apr 1861 Szubin
bapt: 14 Apr 1861 Szubin
father: Carolus Sciba
mother: Francisca Zwierzynska
godparents: Jacobus Bucek, Cecelia Gregorek

Joannes
born: 5 Feb 1864 Szubin
bapt: 7 Feb 1864 Szubin
father: Carolus Scibinski
mother: Francisca Zwierzynska
godparents: Adalbert Kozielik, Marianna Lozina

Most of my research is available online at http://www.chucksroots.org/family.htm

WITZKE in Glinno Wielkie near Torun late 1700s

Looking for other WITZKE researchers and/or descendants, particularly related to the WITZKE family in Glinno Wielkie in the late 1700s. Glinno Wielkie can be found on contemporary maps and is about 12 miles SW of Torun. Other related families who may have been in the area at this time include ZIELKE (CYLKE) and HOHERTZ. Many members of these families later moved to Gombin, Russian Poland.

I am also trying to determine which Lutheran parish Glinno Wielkie would have belonged to circa 1790.
Any relatives born around the Grudziadz region with the name of Ukrzewski?
