Thank you! Will reach out after I go through the information that the previous responder provided. It would be nice to find out that my great grandfather/mother have relatives in Hungary. :>)

Thank you so very much for taking the time to help me!!

Your kindness in providing the English translation of all that information was a gift from heaven. I am using google translate to work my way through nana theresa's data. LOL I will get there and probably learn a few words in Hungarian. :>)

Introducing me to familysearch provided me with another tool to track the other side of the family.

I don't feel as lost anymore. Thank you again so very much.
Assuming they were Catholic, this is very likely Alexander's baptism:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X26R-Z7P
Hungary Catholic Church Records, 1636-1895
Name: Sándor Szirbek
Event Type: Baptism
Event Date: 31 Mar 1880
Event Place: Teés, Veszprém, Hungary
Gender: Male
Father's Name: Ferecz Szirbek
Mother's Name: Trézsi Reiber
Line Number: 11
GS Film number: 699696
Digital Folder Number: 004666320
Image Number: 00335

Ah!
Searching for my grandmother’s Hungarian ancestors.

Her father was Alexander Szirbeck (B: 28-Mar-1880; can't find date of death). Anglicized the last name to Sirbeck/Serbeck in the US.

Her mother was Terez, anglicized to Theresa (B: 03-Mar-1883; D: Mar-1965 in Florida). Not sure if her maiden name was Kovac/Kovaec.
Children - two were born in Hungary: Julia (B: 2/24/1901)
Terez (anglicized to Theresa) (B: 1/16/1903.
Children - two were born in USA:
Catherine "Katie" (about 1912) in MA, and Bertha (about 1909) in Weymouth, Atlantic, New Jersey.

Marriage - Julia married Vito Antonio Pelosi; Theresa married Torindo Pelosi. It seems Bertha changed name to Barbara and married Maurice Lolli. Cannot find husband for Catherine.

Any information is greatly appreciated.
Hello,

Both of Ambrose Stahl's WW1 and WW2 draft registration cards list his birth date as May 30, 1887. The WW1 card has his birth place as Totvazsony...

He was my great grandfather and I can state that of his daughters looked very much like her mother Anna Weidlinger. Anna Teresa Stahl was my grandmother and their is no mistaking the resemblance.

I too have no records on the Teresa he married after Anna passed away in 1939.

Thank you so, so much for taking your time to translate this for(and discuss this with!) me. I wasn't sure anything could be gleaned from Janos' records, but what you have "proven" is that Imre is indeed from Csot -- and the reason for his absence in the index is due to an error (or he's just not been transcribed yet). The information you confirm puts Imre firmly in Csot AND firmly in the 1853-54 birth year period.

There is a Family Search location in my state -- the trick becomes how to get there when they are actually open! But I should at least call them, present them with this problem and see what they say. Perhaps a number of Csot records were destroyed or lost during that time and a search would be futile. Though I would love to find his birth details, at the very least, I know his parents and a few of his siblings.

And I also know more specific details about him and his family, thanks to you and your helpful translations. I find myself so eager to figure out the mysteries, that I have to step back and recognize that little Janos was a real baby (if that makes sense) and not just a record for me to find. He would've been my great-uncle, my great grandmother's brother. Imre and Vera went on to have two more children, Theresia and Karolina, after Janos. My great grandmother, Ilona, would've been about 8 when he was born and died.

And yes: I remember discovering the digitized Civil Registration records and I thought, Why not look? I knew my great grandmother was born before 1895, but....And within 2 pages, there was Janos Kid Kadi.

Well, again, I am tremendously grateful for your help and advice. My next step beyond Imre is to see what there is about Istvan and Katalin Csore, though I believe that's coming close to the limit of what Hungarian records are digitized (1790's? Something like that..).

Take care and -- as always -- I really appreciate it!

Meredith

(Now that I'm on my computer rather than my sister's tablet, I have room to think and can type properly...) Here's my translation of the two records for the infant:

Item 4.
Dated in Csót, Oct. 9, 1895.
Informant: Imre Kis Kádi, agricultural day-laborer, residence Csót, known personally to registrar.
Father: Imre Kis Kádi, religion Roman Catholic, occupation agricultural day-laborer, residence and birthplace Csót, age 41 years.
Mother: Vera Nagy, religion Roman Catholic, residence and birthplace Csót, age 35 years.
The birth: place Csót, date and time Oct. 7, 1895, 3 p.m.
The child: sex male, religion Roman Catholic, given name János.
The informant made his mark.
[marginal note:] Dated in Csót, Oct. 9, 1895. The herein-registered child died. The death is entered in the local register under item 2 of the current year.

Item 2.
Dated in Csót, Oct. 9, 1895.
Informant: Imre Kis Kádi, agricultural day-laborer, residence Csót, known personally to registrar.
Deceased: János Kis Kádi, religion Roman Catholic, residence and birthplace Csóth, age 5 minutes (lived for five minutes).
Father: Imre Kis Kádi, agricultural day-laborer, Csót
Mother: Vera Nagy, Csót
The death: Csót, Oct. 7, 1895, 3 p.m., cause congenital weakness.
The informant made his mark.
[The marginal note concerns a decree allowing the crossing out of the word "years" under the deceased's age heading. This is a very, very early civil registration -- they started a week before this child's birth and death -- and they hadn't worked out all the kinks yet.]

The birth record is a valuable find: it's the older style, so it has a birthplace for the parents. It says Csót for Imre, so the lack of a birth for him in the index is either a transcription/typing error, or that page was missed, or something. I think at this point you're stuck ordering microfilm(s) to your local Mormons -- at least with the evidence of the child's birth record, you have some basis for sticking with just Csót's records.

I do have a death record for one of Imre Kis Kadi's children, Janos, in 1895, as well as his birth record, sadly, quite close together. Again, when I translate, I only get the general sense of what is being said (meaning, I can read his (Janos') parents: Imre Kis Kadi and Vera/Veronika Nagy and that they were in Csot, and that he, Janos, was an infant). I am wondering if I am missing any further clues to Imre Kis Kadi's life...as I cannot find his birth record.

I know this is a longshot, but if anyone could please give a quick translation of this record, it might point to where I can find him??? Any help is very appreciated, as my own translation skills are quite general...Thank you , thank you!

Meredith

Hi --

Thank you so much for responding...Yes, I have (so far) found that Istvan (Kis) Kadi and Katalin Csore (or sometimes Csori) had Lukats (17/10/1848), Juliana (20/2/1850) and yes, Agnes in 1851; she was listed as "Kady" so it did take me a little while to find her!

But no Imre. If it were not for the evidence on his death record, which clearly says his parents are Istvan and Katalin and that he was born around 1852-3, I would think I was crazy. I have tried searching just by last name (and variants), just by first name (Imre and Emericus, as well as Istvan or Stephanus as father), not only in Csot, but in the whole of Veszprem in general...and nothing. A previous kind poster mentioned that perhaps all the birth records have not been digitized? How else can he be entirely absent?

Well, it is a mystery! I do not know where else to search, besides the Family Search website. Is there perhaps an Archive in Veszprem county I could research? I should look.

Thank you again for your interest...I'd really like to find him! I appreciate your taking the time that you did to help.

Meredith

Hi Meredith ,

your discussion was very interesting to me, so I tried to find Imre. I didn't find him, but I found Ágnes who was born in Csót 02/04/1851. Her parents were István Kády and Katalin Csöre. I relalized that there was more Kadi family around CSót in that time. So may be Kis (means small)made only difference between the families. Try to find only Kádi or Kády. Sometimes you can find also typing error in transcriptions.
Regards

I am very grateful for your translation -- and for your suggestions about why I may not be finding Imre's birth record. I had feared I had misread the document somehow, but Istvan Kis Kadi and Katalin Csore were indeed his parents. (And I know that Veronika Nagy is definitely his wife).

Istvan and Katalin had two children I could find with certainty: Juliana (b. 20/2/1850 in Csot) and Lukats (b. 17/10/1848 in Papateszar). Two children (well, 3, if we include Imre) seems a small family for this time period, so I am sure there are others. They are either, as you suggest, born elsewhere (like Lukats was, though I understand Papateszar is quite close-by Csot?) OR, as is likely, too, their records have not yet been transcribed.

Since Juliana and Lukats are born less than 2 years apart, there would be no child in between them. It could be that the transcription halted at 1851 or 52, right around when Imre would have been born. I did not realize that the transcription project was not completed; this gives me a little hope that Imre's record is indeed out there.

Thank you again for your continued help! Both the information you've provided and the discussion/exchange we've had has helped me very much to understand the research and think things through. Thanks for taking an interest!

Meredith

Item 23.
Entry date: Dec. 22, 1933
Death date and time: Dec. 22, 1933, 9 a.m.
Name, occupation, residence: Imre Kis Kádi, agr[icultural] smallh[older], Csót
Religion: Roman Catholic
Age: 81 years
Spouse: Veronika Nagy
Parents: the late István Kis Kádi, the late Katalin Csöre
Cause of death: old-age exhaustion
Informant: Mrs. Ferenc Boros

---
Unfortunately this is the later-style death record -- easier to browse through, but less info. In particular, it's missing the deceased's birthplace; it only lists his current (last) residence. It's possible that he was born (or at any rate baptised) somewhere other than Csót, even if his parents lived there all their lives: if they happened to be visiting someone when the baby arrived, they would've had him baptised by the local priest. (There was a nearly-universal aversion to letting an infant go unbaptised longer than a few days, especially if it was sickly or weak.) The other possibility for why you're not finding his baptism is that it could easily have been mis-indexed, or perhaps even not (yet) indexed -- the completion percentage for the Catholic baptisms index has been stuck at 87% for well over a year now.

Could someone please help me translate this death record of my ancestor Imre Kis Kadi? I believe it says his father was Istvan Kis Kadi and his mother Katalin Csore, but I am having trouble locating an exact birth record for him from this information (besides the fact that he was born approx. 1852) -- and I wonder if I am misreading. Because I cannot find an Imre Kis Kadi with those parents around that date...

I also cannot decipher what it is he died from.

I have attached the record.

Any help with the translation would be most appreciated!

Thank you so much for replying! I'm grateful for the info..

The family is Catholic; that I know. I think I have just run into the issue that you describe: the transcriptions by the indexers not always being reliable AND the clerks who filled in the original documents having creative spelling (not to mention the name-owner's own uncertainty as to consistent spelling!).

I have found that Imre and Emericus both do come up when I just put in Imre. And, of course, there's a wealth of Istvans (or Stephanus) -- my trouble is pinpointing which one.

You inspire me to get back in the trenches with the LDS Family Search; I got frustrated a few months ago, and turned my attention to the Civil Registers for more "recent" searching.

It looks like, as I do more asking around, that my best resource will be at a Family Search location. So on to that!

Thanks again for taking the time -- I appreciate it!

Meredith

FamilySearch has microfilms of the Roman Catholic records from Csót going back to 1779:
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/294878

Baptisms from these records have been indexed, but there are many misreadings, especially of unusual surnames, so it can take some creative searching to find the relevant records. In particular, I couldn't find "Kis Kádi", but there's lots of Kádis in Csót -- but none of them are Imre. (There are about a dozen Istváns.) I couldn't figure out whether Imre = Emeric(us) is in the search engine's list of equivalents, so you may want to try both ways.

For marriages and deaths, you'll need to order the films to your nearest Mormons, because they haven't been indexed, and the images are not online.

If your ancestors were Lutheran rather than Catholic, then there's pretty much nothing online, and (per the 1877 Gazetteer) you'll want to order the film for Vanyola:
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/211042

If your ancestors were Jewish, you'll want to try JewishGen.org, and look for Adásztevel for the town (again per the 1877 Gazetteer).

Istvan Kis Kadi from Csot

Hello --

I am searching for information about my ancestor, Istvan Kis Kadi, who was born in Csot, Veszprem. He had my great great grandfather, Imre, in about 1853, and his first child in 1848, so I am guessing his birth year would be prior to 1828-30.

Istvan's wife was Katalin Csore. I have searched the LDS Family Search records and a few other sites and have found nothing (so far!).

I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge of where to look to find Hungarian records, specifically from Csot or nearby villages, that are PRIOR to 1848? Or if anyone knows anything about the Kis Kadi family from this area, I would love to find out.

Istvan's granddaughter, Ilona Kis Kadi, was my great grandmother; immigrated to New York in about 1908 and since then, there's been a disconnection with her family in Hungary. I would love to try to reconnect the ties.

Thank you for any suggestions on how to further my research into pre-1848 Csot records. I appreciate your help.

From the only records I could find his father was a M. Steinmacher also of Papanyoger.
My Grandfather emigrated from Hungary in 1927 to Canada... but did return to Hungary for family visits into the early 1980's. He sadly passed away in 1992 before I was old enough to obtain history from him.
Does anyone recognize this family or it's place of origin?
1_cdmoore,
Saw your other Ancestry.com post, although I found this one first, next I'll post there. Here just want verify the correct time frame, mid 1850s or 1890's through 1910?

The problem you may have is the correct place name(s), your Bontesti / Bontost at around 1900 in Hungary was Bonc(z)esd / Bonc(z)afalva.

Also perhaps some persons on your list may came from other villages in Arad County, for instance found a Lupei with EllisIsland.org from Baltfalu (corr. Baltfalva aka Baltyele), Arad, in the same Borossebesi District as Boncesd:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/arad.jpg

PASSENGER RECORD
First Name: Pasku
Last Name: Lupei
Ethnicity: Hungary, Roumanian
Last Place of Residence: Baltfalu (corr.Baltfalva), Hungary
Date of Arrival: Oct 29, 1912
Age at Arrival: 37y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Kronprinzessin Cecilie
Port of Departure: Bremen
Manifest Line Number: 0016

So, I join the Board Administrator, the more information you gave the more we can get.

Hope this helps,
Joseph

I just returned from Varoslod, Hungary, (Waschludt prior to WWII) where I met with the mayor/burgermeister/polgarmester Istvan Csekenyi. My grandfather Joseph/Josef Pfenning was born there in January 1884 we believe, and had a twin brother Michael. Josef emigrated to Akron, Ohio in 1910 and Michael emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio either before or later. There are only one or two Pfenning graves in the graveyard, so it appears most emigrated or perhaps lived elsewhere. We never had contact with Michael and would like very much to find his family members in the USA.

I am the grandchild of Pfenning Antal from Varoslod (Kossuth street).Unfortunately, I have not heard about Michael and Joseph Adam Pfenning until now. As far as I know from my father, two families (with surname Pfenning) lived in Varoslod in the early 20th century, one died out and the other family is ours.

Actually,I and my close family live near to Budapest but we also have relatives in Varoslod. It would be pleasure to have a contact with you and we would like to stay in touch with our relatives.

My contact: phoenae204@yahoo.de

Feel free to contact me anytime!

Best wishes.
