After getting the Naturalization papers this week on my husband's grandfather we have discovered he lived in Varpalota Veszprem and then at some point in time he moved to Szekesfehervar and then immigrated from Rotterdam on the Holland America Amsterdam May, 1897. The family settled in Newark, NJ. I am unsure of the church at that time. He then moved and married in New Kennsington, PA,then to Cleveland and finally settled in Edgebrook (Chicago) where they attended the Lutheran church.
I assume the family came from Germany to Hungary, as he only spoke German when he came to America and was 10 years old. The family name was spelled Muhlbacher but he changed it to Muhlbacker at some point in time. Any information about the area, economics, etc. would be appreciated. I will be travelling to Budapest next summer and would like to visist the area and would love to look up records, but I only speak English and German-no Hungarian. HELP Please! Thanks, Melissa Smith
