Lucky you!

I haven't gotten to a Research Center yet and the one here is only open for limited hours so I will have to go many times to do research on even one film. But if that's what I must do, to the Research Center and beyond! *Joke from Disney movie TOY STORY*

You are my best guide!
It's generally a mystery why stonecarvers spelled things the way they did -- some things are mistakes in carving that were simply not worth correcting (they're carved in stone, now!), while others are the result of literacy or translation issues on the order itself, and anything in between. You have to keep in mind that our modern concept of "correct spelling" for names is _very_ modern: when the majority of people are illiterate, they can't complain about how the clerk spelled their names.

You may be able to get at least one more generation by looking at the microfilms corresponding to the indexed records you've found. There should be addresses, godparents, and parental ages which can help narrow down the possibilities. Also, the microfilms include marriage and death records, not just baptisms, and if you can find the marriage, it should (theoretically) list the parents. Unfortunately, none of this further research can be done online, unless you're lucky enough (like me) to have ancestors from towns that are now in Slovakia.

There's no indication that the first child died -- these are birth records. The note just says that the birth was reported by the midwife because the father was away: _Az atya távolléte miatt a bejelentést a bába eszközölte._ "Midwife" is _bába_ (not to be confused with _baba_: "doll" or "baby"). The choice of verb here (_eszközölte_: "instrumented") is kinda weird; more standard would be _teljesítette_: "completed".

The note on the second one is fairly standard phrasing for an infant death: _Halálesete a halotti anyakönyv 21/909 száma alatt. Tobaj 1909 április hó 18. Lehner Nándor s.k. anykv._, which is "His/her death event recorded in the death register under number 21/909. Tobaj, April 18, 1909. Signed Lehner Nándor, regist[rar]." The number is generally item number slash year, with the thousands often dropped, which makes it pretty easy to find the corresponding death record, in this case on image 310 of the same batch: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-23641-22149-69...

(And yeah, I did use the info from the death record to find the birth record on image 7, if for no other reason than to try to decipher the registrar's name using more data. I'm still not certain of my reading.)

This is a snip of the civil registration birth record of a family member in Tobaj. In an effort to really understand my ancestors, I am interested in the original Hungarian language used here. Is there anyone who can transcribe the actual Hungarian words and translate any details in the deaths of these 2 infants?

The first entry says, I think, the mother's word was accepted because of the existence of a report but it continues on and I cannot make out the rest.

The second entry says the child died on 18 Apr 1909. The rest I cannot make out.

Any help out there? Thank you for any help.

Yes, that is she. Her parents had more than a few children, 4 with the same name, but I think only Josefa and Ferdinand survived.

Last week I traveled to Northampton, PA where Josefa and Anton lived and finally located her headstone. Her name was spelled with 2 fs, as in Joseffa. Do you know why that would be?

You have found records it took me weeks to find! But this is the end of what I have for the Klucharich/Klucsaritsz and Messenlehner lines. I haven't had any success going further back. There are just too many people with the same names that could be their parents' correct parents.

Thanks for helping. But I want to be as fast as you one day!

Bonnie

You neglected to supply any dates, and without them, it's hard to know where to even start.

For births, marriages, and deaths after Oct. 1, 1895, vital records were kept by civil registrars. FamilySearch has images of civil registrations online; it looks like Szombathely has births through 1915, marriages through 1945, and deaths through 1975 available: https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%...

Before Oct. 1, 1895, vital records were kept by churches, so you'll need some idea of the religion your wife's ancestors followed. FamilySearch has indexes (but not the corresponding images) for Catholic and Reformed baptisms; for other religions, and to check the originals corresponding to indexed entries, you'd need to order microfilms to your local Mormons. (Check the FamilySearch website for instructions and availability.)

If your wife's ancestors were Jewish, be sure to check the JewishGen Hungary Database: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Hungary/

To aid you in further searches, a couple of corrections to spellings:
Bódog (note the direction of the diacritic; Hungarian doesn't use the other kind; as you note, this was often "translated" as Felix)
György (Hungarian for George)

Your question is roughly on par with "looking for Davis surname in San Jose."

The name Varga means "shoemaker" or "cobbler", and as of 2009, it was the sixth most common surname in Hungary. As a comparison, the 6th most common surname in the 1990 US Census was Davis. Szombathely is currently the 10th largest city in Hungary; again as a comparision, the tenth largest city in the US today is San Jose, California.

I'll repeat the old adage: go from the known to the unknown. Don't concentrate on surnames. Many of them are much, much too common to use as a starting point.

Anton NESSENLEHNER, Josephine KLUCHARICH, Victor SZEMLER

How thrilled I was to read my ancestors' names in our newsletter! My mother's maternal g. great grandfather is Viktor, mentioned he was a teacher as I am, and my mother's paternal grandfather is Anton Messenlehner, mentioned he helped to rebuild the village church. He is mentioned in the Burgenland Bunch newsletter along with "the brothers Messenlehner" who emigtated to the US and entered the priesthood.

I easily admit I am a beginner but I expected to be more successful in finding information on these ancestors. I have not been able to find much information on Anton or his wife, Josephine Klucharich, except that they emigrated to Northampton, PA. I am led to suspect they were abroad (?) during the later US censuses because there is little mention of them anywhere. I have absolutely no information on the brothers, no given names, no mentions among RC church lists, nothing.

Is there anyone familiar with Anton Messenlehner (b. 1884 Punitz, Hungary)? Or Josephine b. 1884? Or the brothers? I cannot find anything to tell me who Viktor's parents are, either. Literally, I am at a standstill.

Please forward any information or advice, links, anything to me. My email is: currygirlie@comcast.net.

Many, many thanks from a frustrated, yet eager family genealogist.

My great-grandfather Joseph Nemeth was born in Magyargencs, Vas, Hungary (which google search came up as Veszprem County) on July 28 1883. I do know he had a brother named Alex Nemeth Parents were listed as Frank Nemeth & Lizzy Nagy on his Marriage licence. They both lived in Steubenville Ohio USA.
Im still trying to find what port he came in from I have 2 leads if he did leave from Hamburg Germany back in 1906-07
If I can find his birth record and record of his parents along with any family members it would be really nice.
Additional information his brother Alex was born in 1882.
The official records for Üveghuta were in the Roman-catholic parish of Léka (Lockenhaus) until civil recording took over from October 1895 onwards which was also in Léka. The scan of Joseph Stifter's birth certificate confirms the parish as Léka (see the word "lékai")

LDS has microfilms of the duplicates of the Roman-catholic and civil records of Léka. The original records extend further back than 1828 but can only be viewed at the parish (or at the diocesan archive in Eisenstadt).

Since 1921, Glashütten and Lockenhaus are no longer in Vas county of Hungary, but in Burgenland, Austria. Please take a look at the web site of the Burgenland Bunch (http://www.the-burgenland-bunch.org/homepage.htm). Go to surnames and you'll see that the name Stifter is researched by quite a few members, including two with ancestors in Glashütten. Most of the other places are in the general region of Lockenhaus.

End of reply.

The following message is for Joseph Kupan and is unrelated to this thread. Joseph, could you please take a look at the recent message thread on the board for Burgenland, related to Töröktopolya. Never mind it was the wrong board. My post is the most recent one. It would be much better if you could attempt an interpretation of the scans there. Regards, Fritz

Hello,
As you may noticed it on the documents, the birth place,

on the "Bizonyítvány" = Certificate (stone mason) after Üveghuta "a/L" means at Langeck,

on the "Községi bizonyítvány" = Municipal Certificate (kind of Work Permit) in front of Üveghuta "Lang." also means Langeck.

Both places are the same Langeck-Üveghuta/aka Hosszúszeghuta, Vas county, Hungary until 1920, today called Glashütten bei Langeck im Burgenland, in Austria.

Sárvár, Vas County, Hungary where Jozsef Stifter learned his trade and got work certificate is not that far, albeit now is in different country.

Hope this helps,
Joseph

Hello,

I have some original documents that we found in the back of my grandma's drawer from my G.G.Grandfather. It appears to be a birth certificate, apprentice papers and some kind of ID. I've attached a scan of them. They are titled:

1. Keresztlevél
2. Bizonyítvány
3. Községi Bizonyítvány

What I'm looking for is the place that he was born. It seems to be on all of these papers "Üveghuta". They all also seem to be from Sárvár, Hungary. I'm wondering if Üveghuta was once some little small village in the area of Sárvár?

Any information on this area or where Üveghuta might be would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Liz: That Wilma Abert ia also referred to as Albert is interesting. We have a "Family name History" for Abert and Albert is one variant. We have been trying to attach a copy as a file without success. I will post the information undrer the surmname Abert in a few days. I do not know much about my grandfather, Abert Gyula Sr. (1872-about 1948). I met him only twice as a very young child. He was married twice, first to Irka (Ilona)Barabas, my grandmother, who died young in 1908. They had two sons, Erno, I think and Gyula, my father. There were 3 more children from the second marriage. My father and some of his brothers changed the surname to Abonyi, but my grandfather died as Abert. I understand that some documents, especially handwritten ones showed variations in spelling. Thank you and good luck with your search as well. Regards, Julius Abonyi
To Julius Abonyi
re: Wilma Abert or Albert as had been written in some documents, may not be related to your grandfather. She was the
second wife of John Geroly. Unfortunately, I did not know all of her siblings or immediate family. She was related to the Bendes family as well. I hope this helps in your search, as I and other members of my family will always welcome any news of our family. Thank you, Liz

Hello Elizabeth Friedmann: I am from the Abert family, from Kamon, near Szombathely in the Vas Megy region. My grandfather Gyula was married first to Irka(Ilona) Barabas. My father, also Abert Gyula,(1907-1943) was from that marriage. Could my grandfather be related to your grandmother Wilma Abert? My father and some of his brothers changed their surname to Abonyi, but my grandfather died as Abert Gyula Sr. Presently, I live in southern Ontario, Canada with my family.
Yours truly,
Julius Abonyi

Hello
Seen that message today for the first time. I live in Vienna and I'm a real "Ragendorfer". And I'm looking very hard for my ancestors too. At least now I found someone else.
My Great Grandfather was Sandor Ragendorfer born 13.1.1878 in Hungary I suppose, cause that's what my late granpa told me. Sandor was married to Anna (Simetsberger) born 9.6.1878. They both died here in Vienna.
Best regards from
Michael
