The easiest is to plug the modern placenames into your favorite online map provider. Google Maps came up with 152 km (94 miles) and 2 hours 41 minutes: https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Korolevo,+Zakarpats%27ka+...

I have great-grandparents who list addresses further apart than that on their marriage register, so it's not impossible that your relatives moved between these locations, but it's not a particularly likely scenario.

Researching Munkacsi family. Ship manifests note their residence as Királyháza, Hungary (today's Korolev, Ukraine). His son's petition to become naturalized lists his birthplace as Királyháza. I have also found an entry that might be he in Tiszaeszlár, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Hungary. I can't seem to find a way to see the distance between these two villages. Wondering if it possible that my Gyorgy Munkacsi could have been born in Tiszaeszlár and later lived in Királyháza?

I was trying to get the coordinates for both, but they are written differently, so I'm still unsure or proximity.

Tiszaeszlár, Szabolcs, Hungary
Latitude :	48.03410000
Longitude :	21.45744290

Királyháza
47° 59' 0" North, 18° 58' 0" East
Korolevo (From Wikipedia) Coordinates: 48°09′0″N 23°8′0″E
(Shtetleseeker only shows it in Russia, not Ukraine)

Thank you,
Denise

Thanks again for the great information. I will look up that forum you mention.

I am lucky to live quite near to a Family History Center, and I do have two films on order within the Bereg region--maybe the two you are referring to. Do you happen to know if the 1869 Census records for Bereg are also in the Zakarpattia, Ukraine region?

My ancestors were from Barabas, Bereg.

Unfortumately, the Bereg records are located in the Ukraine in the Zakarpattia region. Ukrainian law does not allow for free on-line access to their records. The ones that have been posted on the FHL website can only be viewed from a computer at a family history centre. Which isn't much help if you live far away from one of these. The Berehove archives

To my knowledge there are 2 films containing parish records for Bereg that can be ordered from FHL. Anything more and you will need to hire a researcher in Ukraine.

I do have a smal project looking at what records that are available for the Greek Catholic Munkacs diocese (which included Bereg) on the Rusyns forum on Yahoo. However we haven't located any records for Bereg in this collection so far. However I would encourage anyone who is searching for family in the Zakaparttia region of Ukraine to join this forum and also check the holdings on the Maramures archives in Romania to see what data is available.

Note: Albert Szent-Györgyi's name is properly spelled with a hyphen.

His father Miklós had one brother, Imre, who married the world champion figure skater Lili Kronberger and had three sons and a daughter. They're the only first cousins of Albert's with the same surname. (One of the sons is my father-in-law, and one of the other sons is also still alive. Yeah, there were some looong generations in there.)

Here's a funeral notice for Albert's paternal grandmother listing her two young sons Imre and Miklós among the mourners:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11021-51793-25?...
(The next notice is also her.)

Various people have done fairly extensive work on Albert Szent-Györgyi's family tree, and I have all of that material entered in my files; the only David Sz-Gy in said files is my husband.

I'm afraid that whoever told you that your grandfather was Albert's first cousin was mistaken. If you're related, it can't be any closer than one of Albert's grandfather Imre's brothers (he was one of 9 children, not at all unusual for the 1820s-30s) or somewhere even further back. All in all, I would assume no relation unless proven otherwise: there were places named for St. George all over Hungary, so the surname is not uncommon.

Looking for relatives with the last name Szentgyorgyi. My father and his family came over in 1957 from Hungary. We still have many relatives over there. My Grandfather was Jozsef Szentgyorgyi and his father was David Szentgyorgyi. There is a lot of information here on Albert Szentgyorgyi. i was told he was a first cousin to my Grandfather but I cannot find the information to make the connection to my tree. My tree is public, Joseph St.George Family Tree, so please feel free to take a look. I guess my grandfather decidedd to Americanize our name or they did it for him, I do not know. Please contact me with any information you can share.Thank You, Joe

There was a Karol from my grandparents adopted home in Vintondale PA. There were many who settled in Vintondale who were from Velicky Lucky, Austro Hungary. Did you find any more info? Orr family names were various spellings of Shestak, Halod, Yugas and Selko and came to the USA about the same time as your relative.

I browsed through the birth records from Fábiánháza for 1908-1909, and didn't find anyone with the surname Vastag. If you feel like looking further, the scans are freely available (https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%...); all you need is broadband Internet (the broader, the better). However, given that I didn't find the surname at all, I suspect the family may only have moved to Fábiánháza shortly before emigrating.

Unfortunately, Greek Catholic church records have not been indexed, so no searches on FamilySearch will turn up your relatives' baptisms. If you feel certain that they were born in Fábiánháza, there are microfilms available for "rent", but you have to go to a FamilySearch Center (aka your local Mormons) to view them: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/show?uri=http%3A%2F%...

Nyírbátor's civil registrations also only go to 1909, but that's in Szabolcs county, which is currently being indexed, so maybe something searchable will show up in the near future.

Just as a guide for searches in Hungary in general, here's what's available without going to Hungary in person:

Births, marriages, and deaths after Oct. 1, 1895 were recorded in civil registration offices. The records were entered by hand on preprinted forms, then copied into a duplicate register (also by hand). The duplicates were microfilmed by the Mormons and subsequently scanned and made available online as browsable images. Coverage varies greatly; in some locations, the limiting factor is privacy laws (90/60/30 years), while other locations are entirely missing.

A very few of the above civil registrations are searchable on FamilySearch, all from Szabolcs county. This is an ongoing indexing project.

Prior to 1895, vital records in Hungary were kept by churches. FamilySearch has microfilms of many of these records, but these films have not been digitized, and are not available online. However, baptismal records have been indexed for Roman Catholic and Reformed church records.

FamilySearch loans out microfilms (for a fee: $7.50 where I live) to FamilySearch Centers, so you can get a look at these church records without traveling all the way to Hungary, but you can't get at them online.

For places that were in the Kingdom of Hungary, but are now in Slovakia, the situation is different: the pre-1895 church records are in large part available online for free from FamilySearch, and they're even partially indexed (more being added all the time), but the post-1895 civil registrations are not available.

For places that are now in Romania, there's nothing available from FamilySearch, and very little anywhere online. I don't know anything about places that are now in Croatia or Serbia or Slovenia. Burgenland (now Austria) civil registrations are under their Hungarian names pre-1920, but my relatives from there were Lutherans, so I don't know whether the indexed baptisms cover that area or not.

Hi,
My Nagymama was born on October 4, 1912. Sandor Vastag was definately her father and they were Greek Catholic. In your search did you find any other female Vastag's born earlier? Gizella was the 3rd of 4 sisters - the oldest was Maria and the youngest was Jolan. We don't know the 2nd sister's name. On the immigration records I found on Ancestry, it shows her place of residence as #451 Hedjaljo,Fabianhaza, Szatmar Megye, Hungary.
I think that Sandor Vastag came to Canada around 1920 so that could be why he is not found in Szatmar. His immigration record shows he is from Nyirbator, Hungary and we know his wife Maria died there.
Any information you can find would really be appreciated.
Thank you.

FamilySearch has civil registrations of births in Fábiánháza from 1895 to 1909. You didn't indicate when your grandmother was born, and the data is not indexed, so I can't tell whether this is of any use to you. (It sounds like she was probably born later than 1909, unfortunately.)

I didn't find your great-grandparents in the Catholic or Reformed baptisms (lots of hits for Sandor Vastag, but none in Szatmár). Do you know what religion they followed?

My nagymama came to Canada in 1939 and married Lajos Liptak (from Edelany). I think she had 3 sisters. She unfortunately passed away in 2001 and we are trying to find information about our family in Hungary. Please reply if you can help!

Sorry but I cannot read Hungarian. However I attempted a translation using a Hungarian to English dictionary. my translation was not really clear however as my best understanding is either that you have a family tree that you can forward to me or you would like a copy of my family tree. My branch of the Tompa roots goes back to early 1800 in Nyircsaholy which I visited in 2006. It starts with Lazlo Tompa about 1810? It also includes Alexa/Seylam groups. I would like to find out more but it seems that that they had to do something with tabacco?

I believe his brother George Gall and wife Susanna lived on the quarter section next to them. Frank and Lydia had several children. We are from one of their younger children George's line. We too are interested in family stories, photos and more of the history of the family in Hungary.

Andras Peto/ Agnes Bajusz family

I am researching Andras Peto (b. mid-1800s) married to Agnes Bajusz(b. mid-1800s). Their son Janos Peto was my gr-gr-grandfather, born in Matyus Szabolcs-Szatmar Bereg Shire Hungary in April of 1883 or 1885. He had at least one older brother named Karoly because we found writing on a picture that said "to younger brother from Karoly". I think I found this family on familysearch.org, but am not 100% certain. Janos arrived in US in NY on the ship Graf Waldersee on 11/21/1902 and he was going to Bethlehem PA to a friend, Karoly Toth.

On 7/16/1904, Eszter "Stella" Liska(b. abt 1884 in Ricse, Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen, Hungary) arrived in NY with a cousin, Zsofia Szabo who was 16 years old, they were going to an aunt & uncle, Joseph & Katonia Deak in Woodbridge, NJ.

On Nov 27,1905 Stella and John married in Perth Amboy, NJ and then settled in PA by late 1906. They had seven children; Andy (9/1906-1971), Ethel (1/1908-1999..my grandma), John (1909-1927), twins Lizzie (1911-2003) and Stella (1911-1990), Gloria aka Goldie (1917-2006, and Frank (1919-1992)

I am looking for records for the Reformed Church in Csarnaho Zemplen, The LDS has some records for this church but not for the dates I am looking for 1820-1840, I have been to the East Slovakian Archives in Kosice and the earlier records are not there, someone there told me that they were in the Archives in Satoraljaujhely. Does anyone know if this is true?

Hi there,
I am also tracing our family tree and have some of the same info. Our grandfather Frank Gall born 1871 in Hungary married Lidia (Lydia) Peter/s. They left Botragy, Hungary and went to the United States. Lydia went back to Hungary then went on to join Frank in Saskatchewan, Canada in the early 1900's. They had children with the following names - Emma, William, Frank, Joseph, Mary. They lived in a community called Bekevar (Kipling )Sasketchewan.
I would like to compare information - if this is the same line you are following.

Dear Meagan,

The key to finding your family is working out which village or town they came from within the former Austro-Hungarian empire.

The birthplace for Samuel Vogel of Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg only indicates the modern name of the Hungarian county not the name of the town. In 1857 Szabolcs, Szatmar and Bereg were separate counties. Bereg is now located in the Ukraine and Szatmar also covered part of what is now Romania. Were your family Jewish? Because Jewishgen have an extensive collection of records available. If they were roman catholic, the family search website www.familysearch.com has transcribed most of the roman catholic hungarian birth records. Have you checked the Ellis island records for immigration documentation? This could give you clues as to thier village of origin. If your great grandfather Maurice Vogel became a naturalised citizen, the US government should hold the naturalisation papers which should provide information on his birthplace and parents.

Hello Marta, my name is Kurt. I recently came across your post on ancestry.com and thought I would reach out to you. My great-great grandparents were Jozsef Szilvacsku (b. 1856) and Erszebet Szumutku (b. 1860) from Tornyospalca. They had several children. Magdolna Szilvacsku (b. 1885, Tornyospalca), my great grandmother, married Gyula Zelenak (b. 1873 Mandok) in a Tornyospalca Greek Catholic church on Dec 1904. They emmigrated to America soon thereafter. Would you be able to help me find more information on the Szumutku, Szilvacsku, Zelenak families from the Tornyospalca area? I can send you the hungarian birth, baptism and marriage records I have located.

Best,

Kurt

Szabo means tailor. It is a common name in Hungary.
If you want help, you have to provide more information:
Birthdate, spouse's name, where they lived in US, something that will allow us to narrow it down.

Census data should give approximate birth year and emigration year, perhaps year of marriage. Military draft card should give birthdate, perhaps a specific birthplace. His marriage record, whether civil or religious, should give a lot of info.

Regards,

Chris Kovach

I do not know if this Mike is a relative yet -- I have to wait for more information. The name I am seeking is Ferenc Frank Szabo born in Hungary. Family story is that he married an Irish girl on the boat over to the USA (or at least met her on the boat).
Thanks for the links and additional information!
