No, it's not you, it was an other time an other message, probably because discussion about money the Somogy County Archives, a government agency charge, by the way it's very reasonable.
Were you able to access the Kaposvar Death Register? To brows through would be a way around the privacy law, those records usually include address and people in Hungary don't move much in their life, so there is a good chance somebody from the family still lives there. Forgot to mention, the only phone listing doesn't include cell phones.
Joseph

You're welcome,
First, I looked up the Hungarian online phone directory and found no Presel listed.
The mentioned Familysearch.org database is from the mid and late 1800s, to research the vital records in Hungary like the 1960s privacy laws applies, 30 years for deaths, 60 for marriages, 90 for births, close family members are exceptions.
If have time and want to research it, Kaposvar death registers are available online up until 1980 at the Familysearcg.org website: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12586-52297-49?...
It's free and just registration needed.
Regarding the Somogy County Archives, contact me offline my email is public, the board administrator removed that subject messages before.
Regards,
Joseph
Adam Presel, Grandfather, Gyorgy Presel, Son, Wife of Gyorgy, Katherine Horvath Presel. Would have migrated to Kaposvar with the family during the latter part of 1960.
Thank you! I'm thinking that I will need to see what is actually on the microfilm rolls that LDS has for Somogy county Roman Catholic records. The listing for the microfilm roll says birth, baptism, marriage & death records. But the only searchable items on FamilySearch.org are the baptism records. So I don't know if the roll actually has more on it than the baptism records or not, as they have both have the same name and there is a link to the familysearch database from the roll description page. I've found I believe all the baptism records that are helpful to me at this point. Im now hoping for marriage & death records.

Searching for more info on family of Istvan Oravecz (Oravezz, Orovecz, Oravitz) & Roza (Rosa, Rozalia) Karacson (Karacsonyi). Have found baptism records for 9 children 1867 - 1885 in Somogy, primarily Nagyatád & Csokonya. Included is my husband's gggrandfather Joszef, bapt. March 22, 1870. Joszef supposedly married a Theresa (Tereza?) Kovacs and had at least 2 sons before immigrating with them to the US between 1903 & 1908 (Theresa supposedly died?). Sons names in US are Anton F. Oravez & Gabriel Frank Oravez. Anton born May 2, 1895 in Rinyaujlak. 2nd or maybe 3rd wife for Joszef is Julia Harschka (Heraska), married about 1907 or 1908 (there is also a 1910 marriage record for them in Wisconsin USA.) Any further info would be appreciated - especially where to search Hungary marriage records if possible.

If you have a birth date or birth year you should be able to find him in the parish records which were microfilmed by the LDS church. That is, you should be able to find him if he was born before 1905. The LDS churches almost all have local "libraries," where you can identify the parish microfilms by on-line or microfiche indices to order a rental copy to be used in the libraries. I am guessing you live in the U.S. or a country that has some LDS churches with libraries. I hope this helps.

Cecilia L. Fabos-Becker, San Jose, CA

Question about Berzence

Hi Everyone, I actually have a post a few down from this one asking about my surname Kendjelic/Kengyelics. I am still researching the origination of my name and also trying to find records from here (Gola/Zdala/Berzence) prior to the 1780's.

I was recently told that even though my last name undoubtedly has a hungarian origin (Kengyel) that it may be a musliman surname. I know that my family lived in the Military Frontier zone (Koprivnica-Križevci country) and those living there were given free land and freedom of religion as long as they protected the land. I also learned that Berzence was a stronghold for the Turks during the Ottoman invasion. Once Berzence was regained, they invited others (Croatian settlers among others) to repopulate the town.

Does anyone have any pertinent information regarding the history of this town that could assist in tracing the origination of my family and why they ended up moving to this location and living here for over 100+ yrs?

Any help would be great!! Thanks in advance, Brandon

I have been trying to find information on my Grandmother's family for the last three years. I just found out that she was born in Kaposvar, Hungary. I had been told before that it was Borcs. Do you still look up information? Her name was Roza (Rose) Fazekas. She was born 9 Nov. 1891. Her father was Gjuro (Gyorgy) Fazekas and her mother was Mara Berec Fazekas. I believe Gjuro's father was Jozsef Fazekas and his mother was Marta Kovacs. He had a brother but no one knows his name. They think he moved to Brazil. Mara's father was Stephen Berec and her mother was Eva ??? I am at a deadend with this family. Any help would be appreciated!
The Kiss Family is also related to my family. Joseph Kiss (born abt. 1897 in Hungary) married Katerine Berzsenyi (born abt. 1901 in Schandorf, Austria)Katherine was the daughter of Anna Gruber. Anna's sister Katalin Gruber married Ferenc Gerencser. Ferenc and Katalin were my great grandparents.
Thank you, Laura

You did mention his age or possible date of birth but in looking at the Lutheran Church records in Gyonk I found four Heinrich Schneickers who might be your great-grandfather born between 1876 and 1886. Was his wife actually a Schneicker as well or was that simply her married name? If you know about his age at his death it would solve the mystery. You can contact me directly at hjfischer@rogers.com

My father was born in Barcs in Hungary in around the 30's with this surname - it's not common in Hungary. You got the stirrup bit right, but I was told it is closer to stirrup-master. I live in the UK, my father and grandmother have been dead a while. There was another family around the Drava area with our surname - related to us, but I can't remember the village. I am guessing with this surname we are related somehow (small world!) I have a number of very old photos from around the turn of the last century showing family members - no idea now who they are. Please feel free to contact me - I'm on facebook and could post the pictures for you to have a look at. Any info from you side would be very interestign, how did you trace so far back?
Regards
Steve Kengyelics

My Hungarian-American daughter is 6. Her name is Barbara Liza. I went to town and started snapping away and discovered the pictures were smeared by one of her pretty fingerprints on the lens! I sent one of the smeared pictures. It is the city cathedral. I also had a bright idea and stopped at the international book store there in town and found a last copy of a picture book of the town. I attached a pic of a few pages. Everything is written in Hungarian, German, and English. The detail may not be too good. I cleaned the camera lens and took a picture instead of scanning. My scanner is too small for the pages. I hope you enjoy them.
dan

Patti, here it is 4:45 am on Christmas morning... Our daughter had her traditional Christmas at her grandparents house and I am supposed to be sleeping to await her awakening for the traditional American Christmas morning at our house! I just spent the time since my earlier posting scouring my hard drives for some Kaposvar pictures to send to you post-haste. No luck. I have the city's opera house but there are 2 newly weds in front of it (my wife and I)! I will attach that although I'm sure it isn't of much interest to you. I promise some new photos before the new year! The town has changed since I first came in Jan of 1997. We've added a McDonalds. a shopping plaza and a shopping mall. Our Wal-Mart equivalent is Tesco. It arrived after our we moved to Italy in 1999. Sad to say, some of the main street businesses had gone and lay in disrepair. Just as it happens in America when a Wal-mart opens. We are expecting rain for the next 2 days and then snow, but I will get to main street and take some holiday pictures for you. Have a wonderful holiday!

Thank you very much for your message. The military records I saw from Hungary were microfilms that I rented through the Family History Center affiliated with the Mormon church. The rentals are for three weeks, then they get returned to Salt Lake City, Utah. I still haven't figured out where my great-grandfather Josef Lelek would have served in the military. Familysearch.org should eventually have these records available to look at online, as they are digitizing all of their microfilmed records. I have heard that it will take another 4 or 5 years to get everything online. I keep checking back with familysearch.org to see what new records have been posted. We are opening our Christmas presents in the morning, although when I was young we opened them up on Christmas Eve. There are lights on most of the houses
in our neighborhood. If you happen to see anything with Lelek on it (headstones, etc) it would be great to get a picture, or to see any pictures of Kaposvar. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hello Patti,

I am back in Hungary after some unexpected delay. The winter is upon us here as is Christmas. I don't know if you are aware, but here in Hungary, "Baby Jesus" brings the gifts on Christmas Eve after a traditional dinner of fried carp! With the coming new year, I am expecting to do some research and have yours at the top of my list. I discussed it with my wife and she was surprised you had access to military records in Hungary. Can you tell me how that is? It would most likely break a brick wall for her family. She is familar with Pankota. As far as Kaposvar itself, it is very large. There is one section of the city cemetary that is very old and ill-kept. Another tradition, graves are only cared for by the descendants. If they show no interest, then they fall apart. Please let me know if you have found anything additional since last May's posting.
Merry Christmas.
dan butler

Help with Kengyelics/Kendjelic

Hi Everyone,

With the help of a few people from both here (USA) as well as in Croatia we have been able to trace my surname back to my 5G Grandfather.

My family was from Zdala, Croatia north of the Drava on the border of Somogy County, Hungary. Their town was close to Berzence, Hungary.

I am looking for info on where he was born as we could not locate his birth record from this area. His name was Matija Kendjelic (Kengyelics on death and mariage record). He died on Nov 4, 1829 and we estimate him to be born around 1759. He married Ana Bosnjak born on Jan 26, 1759.

We pretty much hit a road block and I have a feeling that he may have been born somewhere in Hungary as I could not locate a meaning to our surname. The closest I found was "Kengyel" - meaning Stirrup in Hungarian or also could be derived from an area there? This is just my uneducated guess.

Any help would be great!! Thanks, Brandon

Query on direct family members for Joh. Bernhardt in Somogy

I am looking for confirmation of tentative facts found on ancestry trees regarding a Joh.(Johann?nes?) Bernhardt born: Jan 1794 in/near Batschentiwan, Somogy, Hungary. He departed in 1833 from Bremen, Germany on the Virginia and arrived on 7 Nov 1833 in Baltimore, Maryland. Looking for Joh.'s parents and siblings in Hungary. Have a possible name of Anna Neubauer for his mother. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Am searching for relatives of Rosa (Nemeth) and James (Imre) Gyorek from Sand (Somogy Megye) Hungary. They immigrated to Pennsylvania, USA in 1908. Rosa Nemeth's parents were from Nagykanizsa (Zala Megye) - George Nemeth and Theresa Nemeth. Imre's parents were from Sand - mother's name Kata. If any of these fit in with your research please contact me.
My grandfather, Andrew Lalack, Sr., was born in Pankota in 1896. The original spelling of his name is Andreas Lelek. (Some of the descendants changed it to Lelack, and then just my father's branch of the family spells it as Lalack). Andreas came to the U.S. in 1908 with his parents Josef Lelek and Elisabeth Schok Lelek. Josef's father (mother unknown) is Andreas Lelek who was baptized in Pankota on June 8, 1836. The parents of this Andreas are Franciscus/Ferencz Lelek and his wife Anna Schmidt. The baptismal records for Andreas show that his father Franciscus (or Ferencz) was born in Kaposvar about 1801. I haven't searched the Family History Library's microfilms for records yet, but that is the next step in my research. I would like to find Josef's military enlistment records - many are available, but I'm not sure where someone from Pankota would have enlisted. I'll probably look through Kaposvar military records for any of the Lelek family first. It would be great to get some pictures from Kaposvar when you are there, such as the Catholic church if there is one there. I'm not sure where any of the Lelek family that was in Hungary would have been buried ... if you happen to be at an old cemetery and spot a grave with that name, it would be great to get a picture. I would also be curious if there are any of the Lelek descendants still live in the area. I will let you know if I find out more when I see some of the microfilms from Kaposvar. Thanks.
