(What *is* it with families named Bagoly ["owl"] naming their sons Béla? It seems like every second or third occurrence of the surname is attached to this given name...)

There was a Bagoly Béla living in southern California, but he was born in the 1920s, so it can't be the right guy. It appears his family is/was mostly in Canada: www.legacy.com/obituaries/edmontonjournal/obituary.aspx?n=be...

According to Hungarian Wikipedia, there was never a player surnamed Bagoly on the Hungarian water polo team at any Olympics, World Championships, or European Championships (hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magyar_f%C3%A9rfi_v%C3%ADzilabda-v%C3%A1logatott). I did not find an equivalent list of track & field athletes, so I don't know if there was a pole vaulter named Bagoly.
The Olympic Games in the 1930s were not in France; did you perhaps mean that he played for the French?

Do you have any idea *where* he was born? Civil registrations are available online at FamilySearch, but they're not indexed. (They're not complete, either, but 1913 is public domain at this point, so you shouldn't encounter privacy-law-related obstacles.)

The address is probably József körút ("Joseph Circle/Beltway").

Note that the old-style spelling is Ferencz, not Ferencs -- 'cs' is like English 'ch' (as in 'church'), but the sound at the end of the name is like 'ts' in 'cats', which is modernly written as just 'c' but used to be 'cz'.

Found out that Bela born 1888 parents were Ferencs (Francis) Bagoly married Rosalie Baliant (Balint). Now to find out more about when and where born and their children. On Radix forum Bela's brother might have been Francis, born 1881, twins Panni and Arpad, etc. Also trying to find out who Ferencs parents were. So many Bagolys with the same name.

Thanks for your help.\Someone did find and send me their marriage record from the radix list.

Parents of Ettelka Angyal were Adolf Angel and Regina schaffer. List Budepest Fossef Koret 81 could not read correct spelling.

Armed with the district number/name, it only took about 20-30 pages of browsing to find the 1913 birth:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-33847-6480-20?...

Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kis-Kun - Budapest (VIII Kerület) - Births 1913 - Image 1283 of 1695

No. 3735
Date recorded Jun 9, 1913
Date of birth Jun 2, 1913
Child: Béla, boy, Reformed [aka Calvinist]
Parents: Béla István [Stephen] Bagoly, merchant; Etelka Angyal, Budapest VIII. Rökk Szilárd Street 17
Religion Reformed, Jewish
Age 25, 23
Remarks: the mother converted to the Reformed faith per affidavit no. 1192/1913 issued by the pastor of the Budapest Reformed Church dated Aug. 22, 1913.
(thereby the child became Reformed) (Jun 21, 1925) Text in this section in parentheses is erroneous. Jun 21, 1925.
---

I think the remarks section just means that the mother converted shortly after the birth, but the child was entered with his father's religion in the first place, so a remark about the mother's conversion affecting the child's religion was incorrect.

Finding the marriage of Etelka & Béla would take some dedicated paging through the records at FamilySearch. Post the question in the Radix forum -- there are people there with access to some indexed records for Budapest.
Rada István eladta 110.000-koronáért a nyaralóját Bagoly Béla és neje, Angyal Etel budapesti lakosoknak úgy, hogy 50.000,- korona zálogjog megmaradt a nevén. Nyilvánvalóan csak később került sor a vételár teljes kiegyenlítésére, amit a teherlapi törlés igazol."

I will keep you in mind for help
I was told by Bela's son Al that Bela b 1913 was an attorney, professor , started his own school , was wealthy, a was a pole vault and water polo for the European olympics
during the 1930's (took place in France I think). When he escaped in 1947 he had to leave behind everything including child and wife. She was imprisoned for 6 months. Child was
secretly sent to Austria where Bela escaped to. She later escaped and was able to joined them. They lived in Austria for about 3 or 4 year and came to America about 1951 . They wwere sponsored by a couple who lived in Youngstown, Ohio. Later the family moved to California where Bela died .
Joyce

The related section says the family originated Brasso, today Brasov, Romania.
Eva g.father Ferenc B. born 1881, lived in Simontornya, Hungary. If I understand correctly, one of Ferenc brother was Bela who lived in Budapest District VIII, his wife was Etelka Angyal, their son Bela was born 1913, whose son born in the 1940s, moved to America, his wife of Italian descent.
Hope this helps,
Joseph

http://www.radixforum.com/surnames/bagoly

"Béla felesége Angyal Etelka Budapesten a .8. kerületben :1 Bagoly Béla nevü fialived in Budapest1913-ban született Budapesten Neki is 1 fia él most is Amerikában az õ felesége olasz származású.40es években született.Nekik is vannak gyermekeik de nem tudjuk."

Bela Bagoly was born in Hungary the PEST side in 1913. His son said that his father threw away all his metals, important papers, etc. He escaped Hungary in 1947 . All I know from what he said was that his mother was in prison for 6 months. Their son was secretly sent to be with his father. Bela's father was also Bela and remained in Hungary. They lived in Austria for about 3 or so years and than had a sponsor from Youngstown Ohio to bring them over to USA in 1951.

I will try to find out more.

I am researching my son in law's family Bela Bagoly.

Bela Bagoly was born in Hungary June 2 1913 to Bela Bagoly and ???. He was a lawyer, professor and own his own school. From what I gathered he was very wealthy. Bela also was on the European Olympic team during the 1930's in France etc as pole vault and water polo..He married Ibolya Vargas around 1942-1945. They had a son Bela born Dec 1942. They lived in Pest part.
Around 1947 he escape to Austria and later his wife and son escaped. Bela left everything behind. In 1951 the family immigrated to New York on the General R M Blatchford. They had a sponsor from Youngstown Ohio and that is where they settled.

Any information about this family would be appreciated.
Thank you very much for your reply. This information about Soroksar is very helpful and I'll order the microfilm from Familysearch.

I had already checked the JewishGen Hungary Database but, so far, it doesn't have any records from the towns included in the Soroksar congregation.

I do have another question... I see that the Soroksar records start in 1850, do you know if there are pre-1850 Jewish records?

In the 1877 gazetteer, all three towns list Soroksár as the nearest Jewish congregation. FamilySearch has one microfilm covering births, marriages, and deaths 1850-1895 for Soroksár, but they don't have it indexed or otherwise available online -- you have to order it to your nearest FamilySearch Center (aka your local Mormons).

Have you checked the JewishGen Hungary Database? They don't list Soroksár for the birth/marriage/death databases, but it's possible that they're going by modern jurisdictions, under which it's district 20 of Budapest.

Hi Meredith,
No fees at the Archives for this type of research, my time is free, very minimal charges for copies, but not allowed to discuss the amount here, that's why I wrote earlier to contact me thru my posted email, or the message center, it's important. The microfilms are not digitized, basically they're photographing the subject frame(s) and printing it, then can scan it, email it if needed, either way cost pretty much the same if I got the paper copies and do the scanning at home.
Both "Ritzek" and "Kubiczek" are transcribing, the first by the FamilySearch volunteers, the later by me, so after I enlarge and study further both the 1871 and 1855 documents, it could end up something between the two.
Waiting for you email, next week I'm planning be back at the Archives.
Regards
Joseph

Czech Immigrants in Budapest

I wonder if there are any existing travel records for in-coming immigrants to Hungary, specifically Budapest? My relative, Wenczel Balada, immigrated to Budapest from Pardubice, Czechoslovakia sometime in the late 1850's or 1860's. He married in Budapest, and his first child was born in 1872, so his immigration was prior to that date.

Is there any way to track his journey? Would he have had to "register" in Hungary or Budapest? Are there records available? I am limited to online research, as I cannot travel to Hungary.

Any ideas or direction would be much appreciated. I have a few other details about him, if that would be helpful, but otherwise nothing. Thank you for any information on this, or on the Balada family in general.

Hi Joseph --

Your kindness continually brightens my day! You're very good (don't be too modest!) to expend time and effort and the genuine interest I feel you show in helping others find their families, however long ago (and far away!) they may be.

Now, how do I help in the process of ordering photocopies (or, if lucky, digitized images) or the records from the Archives? Surely they'd need me to pay them at least a nominal fee -- or are they free records? Please just let me know what I am to do in the whole process -- I'm so excited that you've found them.

Ah, yes: a year or two ago, I tagged the Maria Maszlonka birth record you cite, with Michael Maszlonka and Catharina Ritzek. The location seemed perfect, though I thought she would perhaps be a bit young to be married and having her first child (Paulina) in 1872. But -- behold! -- we know from the marriage information that Maria was indeed only age 16 at her marriage, which makes the September 15 1855 baptism date a very probably match.

When I read the information about Maria's parents yesterday, my heart sank a little, as "Ritzek" and "Kubiczek" are different names (given that Catharina and Katalin are the same). But -- as you say -- there's a lot of variation with transcription. Kubiczek would be correct and "Ritzek" was transcribed. K and R can be confused, yes; and the "ubi" if scribbled could be anything, even "it"; and it is significant that the endings are the same. Listen to me diagnose the writing! Ha, ha.

Well, please keep me posted on what I can/should do. I have to say, the Baladas over here are intrigued with what you're uncovering! Thank you, thank you!

Take care --

Meredith

Dear Meredith,
You're very welcome, you too kind, I was an immigrant myself, so I can imagine the feeling, that's why I keep helping others.
I can order the photocopies from the Archives, will see if they can do it in digitized form. When I do that I'll also order the birth record film of Maria Maszlonka shown below. I have a feeling she is the right person, the age is perfect, the reason for the mothers name differences Katalin Kubiczek vs. Catharina Ritzek could be the hard to read quality of the older records.
Greetings,
Joseph

Parents: Michael Maszlonka, Catharina Ritzek
Name: Maria Maszlonka
Event Type: BAPTISM
Event Date: 15 Sep 1855
Event Place: Sarlósboldogasszony, Budapest, Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kis-Kun, Hungary

Hi Joseph --

I have to tell you: I am speechless! I am completely grateful for your time and generosity. I can't believe you took such a kind interest in my family and helped me reach information that I never would have been able to. From all of us here in the US: thank you! You have helped re-connect family ties that were long lost.

We had no idea of "Vincent" Balada's parents, nor anything at all about Maria Maslonka. Now I have their parents' names AND their marriage place and date. It's incredible! I am sure you think I am crazy, but to an immigrant family who knows very little about the past, this is huge. You've provided me with more areas/people to research and gather back into the family history.

Is there a way to order photocopies or digital copies of some of the records from the Budapest Archives? I would love to try to do that, at least with the marriage record. If you could please tell me where to go, how to access it, that would be great.

Joseph, I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate the time and effort you've put in to help. Simply: thank you.

Take care --

Meredith

Mary,
Don't know if you completed this post or not. At any rate, I am trying to find a connection between my great grandfather, Hubert Mayer, and a Michael Smoliga. My grandfather entered through Ellis Island in 1904 and his papers state that he was going to stay with his cousin, Michael Smoliga in Trenton, NJ. I have since found a copy of my father's baptismal certificate and a Father Albert Smoliga performed this. At that time my father's family lived in Roebling, NJ. I believe they ran a restaurant and inn. My father Charles was the son of Benjamin Lockyer and Ilona "Helen" Mayer. She was born in Budapest in 1897. My grandmother also had a brother named Karl (Karoly) who married an Anna Sabo in New Jersey. Father Albert Smoliga also performed this service. If any of this links up to any family information you may have, I'd love to compare notes.
Joyce O'Donnell

Ujlak / Buda-Ujlak / B.Ujlak was a village until 1873, than part of Budapest District II and III: http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Ajlak_%28Budapest%29
Parents name on the m.record Wincze Balada and Erzsebet Kruperez, also residents of Buda-Ujlak.
Maria Maslonka born in Buda-Ujlak, parents also residing there, Mihaly Maslonka and Katalin Kubiczek.
The marriage took place on July 30th 1871, ages 29 and 16.
If want to order photo copies of the records write me an email.
Greetings,
Joseph

Hi Joseph --

Yes - Sam sort of paved the way to America, and the brothers joined him later. Of the three, only Janos lived a long life and saw his grandchildren. At least two of the Balada sisters married in Budapest (I have their records), but I don't think any of the family in Hungary saw the 3 brothers again.

Thank you for mentioning where Wenzcel (here, he is Vincent) lived and that it was a nice part of town! As one who is geographically (and, really, culturally) ignorant of Budapest, when I uncover an address or school (I have Mihaly's school papers, where he went to school), I have no idea "where" it is in terms of the life of the city. One assumes the worst, that it is in a very poor or downtrodden section of the town - and, for most immigrants, that is the truth they are trying to escape! So, it is good to hear that at least Vincent was doing well enough to be comfortable.

It's funny -- I feel a little better now that I have an idea that they were living OK. Thank you for that!

Meredith

Meredith,
You're welcome and no problem, I may even go to the Archives this week. Samuel came to the US first in 1905, Janos and Mihaly followed him in 1907, by the Original Shipping Manifests their father Vincze Balada address in Budapest was District I (nowadays District XII) Varosmajor utca 27, nice part of town.
Joseph

Hi Joseph --

What an extremely kind offer! But please, do not go to any trouble. In the future, if you are there and remember, wonderful; if not, that's absolutely fine. I appreciate the offer, regardless.

Yes, that's Jozsef. There is a family rumor that Wenzcel and Maria had another son; in America, he was talked about as "Anthony," so he would've been Antal (I think). I have never been able to find him, and I wonder if he's just one of those family stories that gets mixed up down the years.

My great grandfather Mihaly Balada married a girl from Csot, Veszprem (my g-grandmother, Ilona Kis Kadi)whom he met in New York. Since he died when my grandmother Olga was only about age 11, barely any family knowledge was passed down to her.

So that's why I am searching!

Thank you again for your help and your kindness in sharing information.

Meredith
