My husband, Robert (Jr.), is researching his Hungarian ancestry and has come to a block right off the bat. It seems as though his family name has been changed at least three times in the 2oth century and we're having a tough time with even getting research started without the confirmation of the correct surname spelling.
What we know: Robert (Sr.) was born in Hungary (Kispest), 29 May, 1931. His father's name was Lipot and mother's name was Julianna Pek. The existing family in Budapest currently spell their name as "Marks." There is a surviving sister (Csopi, living in Moson-Sapron?,)who would have some family name spelling information, but cousins are finding it hard to contact her and cannot verify family name spelling past their generation (... strange?!). Robert's father has identification cards that reference both the Marx spelling and the Marks spelling, though the Marks spelling is the earliest, dated in 1953.
My object is to begin research to trace back family to Germany, where they emmigrated from at the turn of the century, but I need solid spelling of the names first, begining with Robert's father to start this (he's deceased, as is much of the family in Hungary). Any leads or assistance is appreciated. Country of origin for Lipot would be prefered, as would possibly a marriage date of Lipot/Julianna or a birth date for Lipot.
Any suggestions and/or help is appreciated. Thank you!
