Hi Harry,

I hope you find what you are looking for. I'm weary of the shotgun approach you took though. What if you are looking in the wrong place? Besides, you only need to post once in the Hungary General if you don't know where they're from. For example before 1920 or so Hungary included a good part of central Europe. What if today his birthplace is in the Czech Republic? or Slovakia, or Ukraine in East Europe? or Slovenia, or Croatia, or Poland? or Austia - you'll have a lot of posting to do if you want to use the same technique around the map.

Try the Central Europe- Historical Regions - AustroHungary and only put in one entry.

Best wishes.

Fred

Known as Jazigies in English. The original Hungarian name Jasz may have come from the word; ijjaas=archer(eeeyass).Nomadic, fierce horseman, beaten and setled by king Saint Laszlo the 1.Language and culture lost totaly assimilated to Hungarian miths and legends. However very proud and independent as they never been serfs.Their freedom was given in a royal bull in exchange for serving the king with horse and sword when needed. Somewhere between the kozeks in Russia and the yeomans in England.Closely related to the Cumini (kun)

Do you have more details on the persons you are researching?
The usual practice of starting out with genealogical research in Hungary is to nail down the name, date of birth, birthplace and religion of at least one person in the tree. Then you can start looking at birth/marriage/death records.

Unfortunately, we have far less information available online than you do in the US.

Can anyone help me locate the village/town of Karshow, Austria-Hungary. My great grandfather, Andro Kindle, listed this as his birth place in his naturalization papers here in the US. He lists his birth place as Hungary in the 1920 census. He was born in 1867, emmigrated to the US in 1890, applied for citizenship in 1921. I assume the spelling Karshow is anglicized. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to locate a name of a village for your ancestors in order to research further.
Was the village in this Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok megye/county?
The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910

Just out of curiosity I went to check the Slovak phone site for the name JARINA. The name Jarina does list in SK.
www.zoznamst.sk

The other two names Swick and Smeal somehow seem americanized.
If the Swick is to be S'VIK (Slovak) than that name lists in Slovak phone book.

The Ellis Island website is listing 46 JARINAs, 12 SMEALs buth they are from Scotland and England, and 28 SWICKs.
Might be worth to check them out for any possible distant relatives.

My father was born to Isidor and Esther Spagatner (both dead). I'm also interested in finding out more about Spagatners - I actually thought we were from an Austrian background but there seems to be a huge Polish connection too - I did a google search!

Anyway, I'm living in kew just outside London - where are you and have you found anything more about the opera singer?

Hope to hear from you

Lorraine

Hi, we lived in Jaszbereny a few years back. The Jaszsag is an area populated by the descendants of the "Jasz" (Yazygs). There is too much history to tell here, but here a few interesting links:

http://www.interj.hu/apponyi/frm72gb.html
http://www.hungary.com/corvinus/lib/timeless/chapter18.htm
http://www.iranian.com/Jan96/Features/SearchingForUs.html
http://southosetia.chat.ru/en_hunga.html
Hi Pat,

There is an Eszter Klaczik on the Ellis Island database who entered the U.S. in 1913 at age 16. She was going to her father György Klaczik in New Brunswick, NJ. Her mother was Zsuzsa Klaczik in Nagy Gejõcz, Hungary.

I believe this town is in the former Ung county of Hungary, but would now be within the borders of the Ukraine.

Beth Long
Hi Alex,

The LDS has microfilms of the Jászberény Jewish records from 1851-1895. You can rent and view them for a nominal charge at your local LDS Family History Center.

In 1895, civil registration was required for all births, and the LDS has filmed these, too (for 1895-1910)

Beth Long
