Mystery solved! I often wondered why so many names. My Grandfather was called either Pista, Istvan or Steve depending on whether he was with friends, acquaintances or those who spoke only English.

Thank you very much for finding all this information for me, I'm so grateful.

The only information I have of my Grandmother's family and my Grandfather's family (his Father's side) are just names that were written down in a conversation between my Cousin and my Grandfather, years before his death. I also had my Grandmother's passport to go by too.

I know much about my Grandfather's Mother's side as he was the illegitimate son of Lajos's brother Peter Csaszar and Valeria Gobertina Erodody.
My grandparents were very closely related as Erzebet's Grandfather was also Istvan's Uncle.

Also known is that Lajos had 5 other sibs, them being: Peter (my Grandfather's Father), Agota, Imrie possibly spelt Imre, Julia or Julianna and Ester or Eszter.
Lajos parents were Maria Tasi and Pysta possible Pista or Istvan Csaszar. Lajos's Grandfathers first name was Anotole.

It's a shame I don't know Hungarian, I end up having to use 'Google translation' to find out what everything means.
In my search for information I am indeed finding that 'Nagy' is a common surname.
I'll try looking around in the 'Family search' site to find more information.

Thank you again!
With much gratitude
Cassie Brindza

Presumably you already have this?:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-20974-3772-65?...

It lists the father Joseph's occupation as "juhászbojtár", which is "shepherd's boy" -- but in this case is probably better translated "assistant shepherd" or some such, because his age is given as 37. Based on said age and his birthplace Egerszólát, which is listed in the 1877 gazetteer as Felsőszólát, I found this in "Hungary Catholic Church Records, 1636-1895":
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X28M-345
Name: Josephus Nagy
Event Type: Baptism
Event Date: 08 Apr 1866
Event Place: Felsőszólát, Heves, Hungary
Gender: Male
Father's Name: Josephus Nagy
Mother's Name: Julianna Magyar
Line Number: 26
GS Film number: 623849
Digital Folder Number: 004665949
Image Number: 00231

Based on the mother's age of 24 and her birthplace Füzesabony, I found this, also in Catholic baptisms:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X2HY-YT5
Name: Eszter Csaszar
Event Type: Baptism
Event Date: 05 Sep 1880
Event Place: Füzesabony, Heves, Hungary
Gender: Female
Father's Name: Lajos Csaszar
Mother's Name: Margit Bagyi
Line Number: 135
GS Film number: 623861
Digital Folder Number: 004620866
Image Number: 93

You may be able to go back another generation on each of them by searching the same FamilySearch index, assuming their families didn't move (which is pretty likely but not guaranteed). It'll be harder for Joseph's side, because Nagy 'big, elder' is and always has been one of the 5 most common surnames in Hungary.

Hello, I'm wishing to find some more information about my Grandmothers side of the family. She was born Erzebet Nagy on August 3 1903, to Ester Nagy nee Csaszar and Josef/Jozsef Nagy. Jozsef was a grape farmer, that is all I know about him. My Grandmother married Pista Csaszar also known as Istvan Csaszar.
If anyone has any information for me I would be greatly thankful.

Thank you for the marriage info of John & Kathrina. I have not been able to locate it. regarding Your previous message time postd 8:27am, John was not married twice, but Kathrina was, this why I think William (brother) was really Gersbachs' son. I dont want to upset anyone, because of birth years, this is my reason. It appears I may write letters to find the family bible,to have the "truth"!
I have contacted the church months ago for info, unfortunatly, they have not filed documents away for safe-keeping. I am surprise to hear of Roman Catholic, i expected to hear "Jewish". Appreciate all your help so very much, I have been attempting to search for over 10 years!

Hi,

On ancestry.com there is a marriage record for G. Otto Gersbach and Katharina Benedict, married 6 Dec 1892 in Cuyahoga County, OH by the Rev. W. A. Spinney.

There is also a birth record for an unnamed male child born to this couple on 8 Oct 1895 in Cleveland.

John Deutsch married Katherina B. Gersbach in Kane County, Illinois on 15 May 1905:
http://www.ilsos.gov/isavital/marriageSearch.do

Here is the link:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12346-133026-81...

But I don't think it's your Otto.

You might have to register on the website in order to view the image. Just in case, I'm attaching a copy of the image.

Generally speaking, the earlier the document, the more reliable. Info on the 1910 census is more likely to be accurate than info on the 1920 census, which is more likely to be accurate than the 1930 census.

Also, keep in mind that national borders in central Europe changed over the years. A village might be in Hungary in 1910, Czechoslovakia in 1920 and the Slovak Republic today. That being said, I don't think this pertains to Switzerland.

If I understand you correctly, John's wife Katherine's maiden name was Benedict, and her first husband's name was Gersbach?

I'm guessing that Otto's father was John. Usually a step-son is listed as "step-son" on the censuses, although this would mean that John was married twice, contradicted in the 1910 census.

The family (families) should be in the US in 1900. The 1900 census should answer a lot of questions.

John and Katherine's naturalization records would answer a lot of questions.

Also, Otto's marriage to Ebba took place at Bethany Baptist Church in Chicago, which still exists. You might try contacting them to see if their records list Otto's parents's names and his birthplace.

Perhaps John died in Chicago and is buried there.

Do you know if the family was Roman Catholic? The baptism record I found is from the Catholic Church records in Mohelnice.

Good Luck!

Chris Kovach

thank you for sending the death certf. But I had found these, but can't find Johns death certf, I have wrote to the cemetary & they claim he is not there!Regarding Switzerland is "said" country birthplace, another document they state Hungary,an another document states Germany. I feel they were protecting their info..for some reason, or just confused. I feel this is the reason why,Otto has stated 3 different birth places for himself....confused,yeah, I know it makes "no sense".Heres the other twist, she was married before 1905, therefore the 2 sons (William & Otto) are probably "Gersbach",not a Deutsch. In those years did people change names legally?
But I will continue to search for the truth. Also, you gave me a link (familysearch)for Ottos' baptism in 1892. Can u send it again to me? It didnt work for me. Again Thank you

According to 1910 census, Otto's parents were born in Switzerland. Note that mother Katherine was married twice, her marriage to John took place ca. 1905. She had six children, three living.
1920 census indicates both John and Katherine were naturalized.

Katherine and her daughter Johanna are living in Tucson, AZ in 1930 census.
I also found the census 1920 info, but 1910 census he is not there. An he is abt 16 yrs old in 1910...where is he living? Putting this politely, he was a very difficult person. I kid you not! So I will verify all info, such his soc. sec info will be tainted, because thats wht he wanted people to believe. He was a police officer & he knew how to manipulate the job/law to his way. Get the picture now.The only acurate info w/b his birth certifcate, which I orderd & has not arrived.Until I see otherwise, the saga continues.

There is an Otto Deutsch in the 1920 census in Chicago, living with his parents, John age 45 and Katherine age 47, and his sister Johanna, age 14. Otto and Johanna list birthplaces as Illinois. John says he emigrated in 1892, naturalized in 1898; Katherine emigrated 1892, naturalized 1898.

I find John, Katherine and Johanna in the 1910 census in Chicago, but Otto is not with them.

What makes you think your Otto was born overseas?

I misunderstood. I thought you had 3 different locations in "old country".
Yes, an alien did not have to become naturalized citizen but if lived pass 1940 than an Alien Registration Form he had to file. I agree that you should verify with at least 3 documents an ancestor's place of birth.
Where is the arrival manifest of the 15 year old Otto? I can only view Ellis Island arrival manifests since I don't have a paid subscription to Ancestry.
I found arriving NY EI :
Dentsch, Otto Basji, Hungaria 15 1893 1908 He is listed Hebrew.

Thank you for the reply, but you wont believe what i will say.On his children his birthplace was in 3 different towns in Illinois. But I have not found him with any family, anywhere 'til 1920 on the census, about 6 mths before he marries Ebba Lind in Chicago,Illinois. It was a way (the family) to never know the truth & then he doesnot HAVE to become a citizen. Oh yea, he was a calculating person. He retired from the Chicago Police force! (1)But I did find (Ithink)on passenger list of 1898 from Huglitz with mother named Anna, father deceased. (2)On Hamburg pass. list July 1908, Otto is 15yrs. old from Budapest. Since I have no info or family to check with. I will need to verify all info to find the truth.Aslo, there is another twist or turn to this....the saga continues, I wont give up!

You're welcome. Would you care to share the 3 different birth places of this ancestor with the board?
I would think that his arrival manifest would be the closes to being as where he was born. His naturalization intent and petition would also confirm what is on the arrival manifest.

Thank you for the info. Regarding Soc. sec. info,I ordered a copy a few weeks ago, well lets say, it may not contain the truth. Putting it politely he was a very difficult person. So I'm verfiying every document to be sure I have accurate info. There are many reasons but this is one, his 3 children birth certificates states father is 3 different birth places......So the saga continues.

In 2007 I did quite a bit of digging after information concerning my grandmother. Her maiden name was Bukovi Mária, born in Domoszlo Sept 1880.
I was able to track her parents, grandparents and the name of her great grandparent.
Her father's name was Bukovi Antal and traced backward from him.

The reason why I also included Felsö-Nána is that Mária's mother's maiden name was Kozma Mária who was born in Felsö-Nána. My grandmother was married in further west in Szabolcs in a town called Ajak.

Hi-We may have some common ancestors. The names and dates cited in your post 7 May 2008 are possibles for my ancestry. Have you made any headway since 2008? My grandfather Matyas and his wife (Margaret Laboda) were from Szihalom, Hungary. I know Antal (Tony) came to the US and headed up to Pennsylvania. Drop me a line.

Hello Joseph,
I did not receive a response from you the last time I posted a message to you, hope all is well. I have enlisted the help of the Red Cross to help find the relatives for my father-in-law. So far we have had no luck. I forwarded the addresses that you gave me and hopefully we will soon find something as my father-in-law is very ill. Thank-you again for your helpful advice and information.

Teresa

Joseph,

I tried the telephone directory and had no luck. We were informed that they very possibly will not have phones. It was also suggested that they may still live in the same town as most people stay in the same area their whole life. Do you feel that it is possible that they would have remained in Nagyrede? We may just come over and look for them ourselves. Do you think this would be difficult? I have two other options that I will try, and then we may fly over soon. Thank you for all your help. It is very kind of you. Talk to you soon.

Teresa

The last one, Barta Zoltán shows Profession: autószerelő =(car mechanic).
Joseph
Hello Joseph,

Thank you so much for your help. I forwarded your letter to the mayor of Nagyrede, so I have now sent it to him in English and Hungarian, and yes I sent it to the email address you gave me. The address I gave you is in Nagyrede and it is ut not utca.

We tried finding phone numbers in the phone directory but could not come up with anything. We were on a Hungarian white pages web site, but could not get any Bartas which seemed strange. Maybe you know a better website for telephone assistance. Do most Hungarians have phones? I was doing a little research and found that about only one third of the population have phones, so perhaps there is a chance that they do not have a phone. I also looked up catholic parishes and it said they do not help you look for people, that you may get help if you contact the parish in the town itself. So I will try to find the name of the parish in the town of Nagyrede.

Thank you so much for your help. Talk to you soon.

Teresa

Dear Teresa,
Perhaps Nagyréde is too small of a place for the mayor to speak English, I was thinking of Gyöngyös, my mistake. The phone call would be just as hopeless unless you can find somebody who speaks Hungarian.
Strictly speaking, officially local administrators can't search for or give out personal information. It's try and hope for the best situation in case somebody in the City Hall willing to do it in private. I'll write you a short letter below in Hungarian, you send it and wait and see, if still no answer, try calling the Nagyréde Bartas in the phonebook by somebody who speaks Hungarian.

If nothing helps, you can try the official channel, which is the Hungarian Consulate or the government agency in Hungary dealing with finding people: Office of the Central Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services, where the Consulates are also sending the requests:
http://www.nyilvantarto.hu/kekkh/kozos/index.php?k=nyitolap_...
e-mail: nyilvantarto.hivatal@mail.ahiv.hu

Tisztelt Polgármester Úr!
Elnézést a zavarásért, családtag kereséssel szeretnék Polgármester Úrhoz fordulni kanadából.
Teresa Lowe

P.s.
Teresa, I'm not sure of the Rakoczi ut 78 address, is that in Nagyrede or Gyongyos? The Technikum address in Gyöngyös is Mátrai út 36, at least today.

Nagyréde has a Rákóczi Ferenc utca (út=road, utca=street, can be mixed up in memory) here is the Nagyréde map:
http://www.cylex-tudakozo.hu/terkep/nagyr%C3%A9de.html

The Gyöngyös - Rákóczi út search finds it in the nearby Abasár:
http://www.cylex-tudakozo.hu/terkep/gy%C3%B6ngy%C3%B6s.html

Hope this helps,
Joseph
