This is not going to be an easy task, as almost no Romanian church records have been microfilmed by the LDS (Mormons).

That means that someone has to go to Oradea, Romania, where the Bihar County archive is, to look at these records. So basically, you need to hire a researcher.

Also, you did not state what religion these people were. Hegykozszentimre had a Reformatus (Protestant) church. If the family was Roman Catholic, they would have attended church in nearby Szent-Jobb

Beth Long

Hello all,

I'm looking for information on Janos Derecskei and Julianna Balazs Derecskei from Hegykozszentimre, Hungary.

I am their great grandson, and have no connections in Hungary or Romania, and cannot speak or read either.

Janos Derecskei was from Hegykozszentimre. He emigrated to the United States in 1906 and lived in Cleveland. He worked for 4 years before returning to Hungary to marry Julia. They emigrated together to Cleveland in 1910.

Julia's name was written as Julianna. She was born in February of 1892. The last name was spelled Derecskei, although they would go by Derecskey in the US.

I believe Janos Derecskei's father was also Janos Derecskei, in Hegykozszentimre.

Does anybody have any information on these surnames in or around Hegykozszentimre (modern day Sintimreu/Santimreu, Romania)? Does anybody have any information on the history of Hegykozszentimre? Can anyone look up any records (marriage, birth, death) for these surnames in this location, if they are available?

I'd gladly search these records if I could read either language and could find them.

Thank you very much.

Saw your post. My grandfather Jozsef Szakacs was supposedly from around that area. He came over here in 1894, went back around 1900 to go into the army and came back in 1905 from Nagy Ida. Lived most of his life in Yonkers, NY, but also lived in Danbury, CT. Had a brother Janos (John)

Hi
My family name is Mesesan and i am from Romania. Also, my great-grandfather and great-uncle came in US in 1912. I am not sure about the name Papp, it may be a Hungarian or the romanian Pop, which is very common.
As for Mesesan, it is definitely a Romanian name. I did some research back at home(I live in Transylvania). My grandparent's village, called Salajeni( quite a big village), in Salaj count is filled with people with this family name(Mesesan) that are not related. We are laughing saying that they had no imagination because they chose to be named after the nearby mountain: Meses.

i suggest you to start from here. When i asked my grandfather, he told me how poor romanian boys were taken to big hungarian towns and then shipped to america. it is a shot in the dark but worth exploring it: the birth and death book of the Orthodox Parish in Salajeni village.
Plus, you would get a chance to visit europe:)
i hope i was useful.
Best regards,
Catalina

Szatmari or Daku

Ilona Szatmari married Ferenz Daku. (born 5/11/1888) They had a daughter Irene born 9/23/13 (my grand mother). Ferenz immigrated to the US in April of 1914. He lists on the ‘Vamospercs’ as his home on the immigration record. Ilona died in or around 1917 (my grandmother said she was 4 years old when her mother died) Irene lived with an Aunt in Bagamer until she came to the US in 1922. Her immigration documents list her nearest living relative as ‘Widow Stephen Harsanyr’ not sure of the spelling of that name (nobody at Ellis Island spelled Hungarian names well) and an address of ‘Busi Utca 15 Debrecen’
Unfortunately my grandmother would not talk about her childhood in Hungary – it is believed she saw her mother killed during WWI – she did mention that she stayed with an Aunt until her father could send for her, and that the Aunt & Uncle had vineyards.

Any information or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Ilona
Hi Kim,

I certainly do remember your father Robert, as well as his older brother Larry, and his two sisters Rita, and I believe Dolores. How are they all doing? As I said in my previous message I left Mount Carmel in 1950 and returned in 1964 to work at Merck, until they shut down their Electronics Division. I moved to NY in 1964 to work at IBM and retired in 1994. My brothers John, Ed, and Emil and sister Dorothy are deceased. My oldest brother Joe is living in Mount Carmel and my brother Vince summers in NJ and winters in Florida.

Larry

Hi,

Sounds like the same line to me. My John Hvizda was born in 1952 in Hazlin Hungary. His son John Hvizda was born 1888 in Hungary also.

John (1888) married Anna Tkac and they settled in Mt. Carmel PA. They had 13 children.

John (1852) also had a son Joseph Wisdo who married Annie Sariski and had two daughters, Suzana (married Vagasky) and Anna (married Zapotocky.)

I was just contacted a few weeks ago by a decendent through the Vagasky line and she has a photo of John Hvizda born 1852.

I just got permission to set up a Hvizda board on this site and will develop it this week.

Email for further details

Kim

Hello Lou, thanks for taking the time to respond to my message. I have a Great Uncle whose name was Alec. Alec had a brother Antal, whose is my grandfather, brother Istvan (Steve) and a brother Janos (John). Their parents were Janos and Elizabeth. They also had five sisters. All from Polgar, Hungary. If my memory serves me correctly Alec died in WW ll. Lou, I don't recall any lineage to Romania, but you never know. Thanks again

I am trying to locate Dookie family in a Province called Bihar in India ( eastern India) . My ancestor came from india around 1857 to British Guiana during the british labor force as indenture laborers. I was able to back track my ancestors history to Bihar. Dookie was married to Sinha but I am not sure if they got married in India or British Guiana. If you have an information or could tell me where I could find information on my ancestor, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Dear Shirley:

My daughter Claire saw your message and responded yesterday. I am the oldest son of Andrew Mesesan, son of Peter and Mary, and we must be first cousins. We live in Orange County, California, and you may know that Dad died in 1975. You probably saw him, along with my mother and sister Mary in 1973 at a family reunion in PA. That was the same week I began college.

What information about Peter and Mary are you looking for? It sounds like you have been on the Ellis Island website - I saw that information last year.

Have you been to Hungary? Contact us at Mesesan4@yahoo.com.

My grandmother told me the Csonka family comes from the area around Debrecen. She recounted a peculiar story about which I am trying to find more information.

On a hunting trip, my ancestor lost his arm keeping a wild boar from killing the 'king' (her word), so the 'king' climbed a tree and gave my ancestor 'all the land he could see.'

According to my grandmother, the family coat of arms has a crest with 6 stars (in Nagy there are 4 listings for Csonka: all from the 15th and 16th century, and none of the coats of arms have this).

I am looking for any clues, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Fred
Looking for any information about Peter Mesesan (spelled Meszesan on Elllis Island ships manifest) and Mary (Maria) Melka/Malka (father's surname) Mesesan (Meszesan) from the town of Bokony and city of Debrecen. Marys mother's madien name Erisebet (Elizabeth) Papp is listed on the Ellis Island ship manifest as closest living relative in Hungary. Bokony is near Debrecen but may be in a different county. Peter and Mary were my Grandparents and arrived in the USA in 1912 and 1913. Also would appreciate information on the origin or meaning of Mesesan surname--could be Old Magyar/Sumerian. Papp is common Old Magyar/Sumerian surname meaning priestess/priest.

Hi,

I am the great-great granddaughter of John Hvizda, who was born in Hazllin Hungary in 1852. He came to the USA with his son, Joseph Wisdo, and son John Hvizda (b 1888).

John (b 188) has 13 children with his wife, Suzanna in Mt Carmel PA. One of those daughters was my grandmother.

wondering if our John Hvizda's were cousins??

Kim

ffannin_1

Is the birth certificate in Hungarian? That certificate should contain a place of birth. If you can share it, we can help you get going in the right direction.
www.bmi.net/jjaso
www.genealogy.ro/dictionary
