Any ideas on how to get military records for great grandfather. I understand records from my grandfather were probably destroyed. When I try go into online military archives it won't load for me - not sure why. Also any idea how to get records for nuns. Would I have to talk directly to the location they were at. I'm wondering if I can't find any information on my grandmas side is because her sisters were sisters. One of them called our house a couple years before my grandma died and I remember them telling us how nuns had a very difficult time under communism and most had to hide the fact that they were nuns. Thanks again so much for your help, I had almost given up on finding anything at all

This has to be your greatgrandfather, then:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X6KS-VVC
Name: Josephus Gergas
Event Type: BAPTISM
Event Date: 23 Jun 1861
Event Place: Fertőszentmiklós, Sopron, Hungary
Gender: Male
Father's Name: Franciscus Gergas
Mother's Name: Rosalia Kosarago
Line Number: 56
GS Film number: 630633
Digital Folder Number: 4552149
Image Number: 132

I'd want a look at the microfilm for the surnames, because neither one looks like it was quite transcribed correctly. Unfortunately, this pretty much means a visit to your local Mormons... (Check familysearch.org for microfilm ordering instructions and the location of your nearest FamilySearch Center, or whatever they're calling 'em now.)

You may be able to add another generation using the indexes on FamilySearch. They have Catholic and Reformed baptisms; the date spread varies by location, but generally covers the 1800s and late 1700s. You'll probably need to do some creative searching, because the indexes are full of mistranscriptions, especially of unfamiliar surnames (but some familiar ones as well: Albert Szent-Györgyi's baptism is listed under the surname "Szeutyotgyi").

Creative searching involves wildcards (? for a single character, * for multiple characters), spelling variations of the same sound (c, cz, ts, tz, etc. for the sound of 'ts' as in 'cats', for example), and similar letters that could've been substituted in the transcription (such as u versus n). There's also some Latin versus Hungarian versus English forms of names to take into consideration, but the search engine is generally pretty smart about those. (It knows that Nicolas and Miklós are the same name, for example.)

Thank you so much! I believe that is him. I just found 2 of his brothers listed under Jozsef and Anna as well. Their birth dates match so I guess my uncle was mistaken on his grandmothers name and I never thought to replace the cz with an n! Do you have any other useful hints for finding information about Hungarian roots? Thanks again so much!
Michelle

My Nagypapa was Erno Gergatz. He was born in 1898. I believe his parents names were Jozsef and Marika. His brothers names were elemer, Ferenc, Jozsef, and Lazslo. His sisters were Maria and Terus. He served in the military and was either in the honved or slated to move into it. My grandparents were married in 1923 and lived in vicza/vica. My nagymama was Ilona Kertesz and she was from rabakecol. She was born in 1902. I believe her parents names were gaspal and Maria. She had 2 brothers Antal and sandor. One was killed in ww1. Her sisters were Maria, Margrit, Erzsebet, and Anna. 3 were nuns. Maria died in 2008. They came to Canada in 1925. I can't find any records at all on any of them. Any help would be great. One of my grandpas relatives planned to visit my grandma around 1991 but never quite made it - all I remember was that he was in the government in hungary. I have tried to search some Beled records

In the 1910 Census, Emery says he emigrated in 1905.
There is an emigration record for an Imre Kertai from Raba Patona coming in 1905, aboard the "Carpathia", to Barton, Ohio to see his father-in-law Ferencz (Frank) Abraham. If this is the correct Emery Kertai, then his first wife must have had the family name Abraham.

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/matchMore.asp?FNM=IM&L...

Regards,

Chris Kovach

Hi,

I've done quite a bit of research on the Hungarians of St. Joseph County, Indiana. Have you seen this website?:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~instjose/immigration/hunga...

The Himod Catholic Church records have been microfilmed and are available at the Mishawaka Family History Center (I'm assuming you live in St. Joe County). I think, but I'm not sure, that the Veszkeny records are also on permanent loan there. You should be able to trace the Pajor and Beider back into the early 1800's.

Regards,

Chris Kovach

Further information would be appreciated for clarity of relationships on my grandmother Anna Racz Kertai and grandfather Emre Andrew Kertai. We have information going back to Matti Kertai,Mari Kish, Betty Varro,Janos Roka for Emre but do not have all of the siblings of each family. Also, Racz side we can go back as far as John Racz, Kaitlin Sagi, Janos Kaloci,Ethel Karhuz. Again, we do not have siblings, etc. Any leads on any family information would be helpful.
Emre Kertai married a Mary ? but she died. he then married Anna. Both Emre and Anna immigrated to the United States.

"Evangélikus református" is one of those designators that exists purely for the confusion of researchers. Or so it seems.

It helps to keep in mind that *actual* Lutherans are almost always labeled with some variation on "ágostai hitvallású evangélikus", usually "ág.h.ev.", which is "Augsburg Confession Lutheran". The other confession is Helvetic (helvét), but it's used less often than "református" and "evangélikus református".

Julia
/\ /\
>*.*<

There was an error in my summary of the marriage record, which I realized when reading miao's transcription of the death record of young Erzsébet. The religion of the family was "reformed" (usually meaning Calvinist or Presbyterian), not Lutheran as I had written. What brought me on the wrong track in the marriage record is the notary's use of "evangelikus" before "reformatus."

A look at the breakdown by religion in the census results of 1910 shows that most inhabitants of Táp and Ete were reformed (Calvinists), and there were nearly no Lutherans.

I ended up finding the death record on FamilySearch so that I could zoom in properly (talk about "cramped" handwriting!):
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-23100-26456-51...

Item 18. Recorded Sep. 15, 1910, date and time of death Sep. 14, 1910, 10 p.m.
Deceased: Horváth Erzsébet [Elizabeth Horvath], Táp, religion Reformed [aka Calvinist], 6 years old
Parents: Horváth Mihály [Michael Horvath] and Nagy Erzsébet [Elizabeth Nagy]
Cause of death: tuberculosis
Informant: Nagy Sándorné [Mrs. Alexander Nagy]

As for the picture, the spelling is ...creative to the point that I have no idea what the last line is trying to say. My stab at a transcription: "Kedves gyerekeim a Sándor is it vot mindig ki is vag van gozs tata 4 cser". The beginning is clearly "my dear children, Alexander was also here all the time", but after that, I have no idea.

I also found the record of the death of their oldest child, Erzsebet, born abt 1904 and passed Sept 15, 1910-I cannot read Hungarian and would love to know if the cause of death is recorded. Again, thank you much for your assistance!

Summary of the record: The marriage was recorded on February 5, 1903 in Táp, Gyõr county. The groom (your grandfather?) was Mihály (Michael) Horváth, born June 4, 1874 to parents István (Stephen) Horváth and his wife Julianna nee Dekai, all Lutherans from Ete in Komárom county. The bride, your grandmother, was Erzsébet (Elizabeth) Nagy, born in Táp on Sept. 30, 1883 to parents Sándor (Alexander) Nagy, already deceased, and his widow Zsuzsanna (Susan) Takács, all Lutherans and from Táp.

The witnesses (or best men) were János Szij(?), age 40, from Ete, and István Polgár, age 70, of Táp. You find the names of the witnesses by going to the next page, where the reverse page of the marriage record is on the left side.

For finding living relatives, you could browse through the civil marriage records of Táp and possibly Ete. The marriage records of Táp available on-line go till 1947, the death records to 1977. Many living residents of Táp would liely remember or know persons who married in the 1930s and 40s.

While Táp and Ete were and are in different counties, they lie relatively close to each other.

I found the correct spelling for Dakaji, its Dakai. Anyway, we are researching our relatives including my grandmother who was born in Tap in 1883. As for proof of that, I have several source documents that state her date of birth, and where she was born. I wouldn't even waste my time if I wasn't sure where she was born. As for the other surnames, Horvath was my grandmothers married name. Dakai was maiden name of her mother-in-law. Nagy was gran's maiden name. She was married in Tap in 1903.Immigrated to U.S. in 1910.

The problem is that Horvath and Nagy are both within the list of the five most frequent Hungarian last names, while Dakaji seems to be nonexistent. Could this name be Dakaj, Dakai or Dakay? How reliable is the source you have that points to Tap?

I can locate both Sopron and Csorna on maps, but not Sopron Nemeti. Does anyone have any idea if Sopron Nemeti is the same as Sopron or is it a different town?

I suspect there is a branch of the Lobisch family here and I would like to be certain of the town before I spend time looking through the records on FHL.

I am looking for people with the surname Gabnai who lived near KajarPec (Kis Pec) in the late 1800s. In particular, I am looking for information on Jozsef Gabnai and his daughter Julianna.
Sandy Hegedus

Was Grubich your grandmother's married or maiden name? My aunt Agnes Grubits Feldman(1904-1968) born in Kophaza, Sophran Hungary immigrated to Steelton Pa. Her father was Adam Grubits Her mother Katalina ??Kaukovich?? Grubits. ( I couldn't make out the correct spelling from Agnes's Hungarian birth registration). Her father Adam had immigrated to Harrisburg Pa. in January 1905 to work/live with his cousin John Bruckner then returned to Kophaza to bring his wife and children Vitaly age 9, Karl age 8, Katherine age 6 and Paul age 4 to Steelton Pa in 1922. On the same ship in 1905 when Adam Grubits came to the USA the 1st time was a Paul Radich who was also from Kophaza going to his brother in law Matyas Grubits who lived in Harrisburg Pa. Do any of these names help? The Grubits, Grubich and Grubic's names were apparently spelled/interchanged according to whoever was doing the writing

Flér/Altmann of Ravazd

I'm looking for any information on the Altmann or Flér families. They lived in Ravazd beginning at least before 1816. Does anyone have any information on this town in particular or of Austrian/German immigrants in this area. I am assuming that these are not Hungarian last names.
Thanks in advance!

Susan,
you surely have relatives in Kópháza, Grubits and Tauber are common names there.
- try to searh 'Grubits/Grubits', 'Tauber', 'Kópháza' in all message boards, there are a lot of matches.
- the episcopal archives in Győr has the copy of the parish books, there is a running project of digitalisation of all records. Don't know what is the actual status, I will ask ask them.
- dou you have exact birth date of your ancestors landed in the US?
Br
Laszlo

The only way I would know of would be to check the phone book. There is an online phone directory for Hungary, but it doesn't seem to recognize the town of Kophaza.
I don't know what else to suggest.

Chris Kovach
