I am looking for more information about my Groenke and Kowitz ancestors, all of whom either actually came from West Prussia or I suspect so.
My family of Groenkes settled in La Crosse, Wisconsin. While I do not have all the family lines, the parents were Jacob and Henriette, and their children were Karoline, Ernst, Carl, Henriette, Ferdinand, Joel, and Hulda, as of 1859. Many of the children were married in the First Lutheran Church in La Crosse. The information I have is from the LDS and from the SS Centurian passenger list. It was the ship's passenger list that helped me find most of the family in Wisconsin.
Karoline Groenke is my ancestor, and she married Ferdinand Kowitz, later moving to Cannon Falls, Minnesota. I do not have any other information on the siblings of Karoline or on Jacob and Henriette's origins. The SS Centurian left from Hamburg to New York September 21, 1859. It is my guess that they came from West Prussia, although they may be from anywhere in Germany or Prussia.
I also have the following about Ferdinand's family, which I am looking to verify:
Ferdinand Julius Kowitz, b. July 5,1842 Glasberg, W. Prussia, Prussia
siblings Friedrich, Caroline, August
father, Erdmann Kowitz, b. 1817 Pomlau, Danzig, West Prussia (Gdansk)
Erdmann's father Johann Kowitz
Erdmann Kowitz and Christina Arendt, m. Sept. 26,1841 Mariensee, Danziger Hochn, W. Prussia
Christina Arendt, b. abt. 1820 Glasberg, W. Prussia
Christina's father, Andreas Arendt, b. abt 1792, Schoenbeck, W. Prussia
Andreas Arendt and Euphrosina Marczinke, m. Feb. 19, 1815, Schoenbeck, W. Prussia
Thank you for any information you may have.
